QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

I don't know about that. The hype around Terrelle Pryor was like nothing I'd ever seen. And it was even more in the spotlight because of the circus around his recruitment.

This transfer was handled skillfully and efficiently. The TP recruitment was a movie of the week.

As for skill-level, could you imagine Pryor in an Urban Meyer/Tom Herman or Urban Meyer/Ryan Day offense? He was really good with Jim Bollman and Nick frickin' Sisciliano coaching him.

Pryor in recent offenses....he was a horribly inaccurate thrower, wasn’t able to execute single-reads, was turnover prone, and despite his elite physical abilities, an overrated runner. He was a pure highlight film player-in both the good and bad sense.

Pryor IS the worst case possibility for Feilds...though Pryor wasn’t the brightest guy in the world and Fields is supposed to be a pretty sharp kid. Hopefully he’s not a complete jackass like Pryor was.

I might be misremembering somewhat, but I recall about 90% of third and long first downs being from Pryor breaking contain by stiff arming the DE and running for it.

In terms of buzz? He isn't close. Pryor was a generational talent in terms of hype. He was also following 3/4* types. Fields is following TP, Brax, JTB, 12G, Dwayne.

In terms of QB talent? Not close, the other way. Fields has the feet and arm talent, and his upside dwarfs Pryor. Pryor also was not an efficient operator of the offense but could out-athlete anyone on the field (usually all of them), not unlike Braxton.

Do you think Day could have made TP into a QB rather than a freak athlete taking snaps?

Definitely. I think Day (or Wilson) could have highlighted his strengths rather than using them 1.5x per year (usually after game 11). Would he have been a high level NFL talent? No, but he managed to start in the league at QB with the minimal training he received.

I think the raw version of Fields will bear some similarities to Pryor, but the levels he can reach after that are what has everyone excited.

Fwiw, back in the day, this board thought Tress was a QB whisperer. Remember all the talk of “if he can do xyz with Krenzel then imagine what he can do with... then came Troy. Many thought Tress had a handle on it. But I digress...

It was because he made Bellasari look better, not CK.

and he actually did

I just want to state this again, because it bears repeating.

Fields was an Elite 11 MVP....even over Trevor Lawrence. That is 7 on 7 passing, where your legs are 100% taken away from you. So Fields, in a 7 on 7 tournament, with elite athletes across the board, out-performed Trevor Lawrence, and by many of the coaches there assessments, was the best they've ever seen...that includes Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston, DeShaun Watson, Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailia.

I thought this quote from Trent Dilfer was pretty telling, as I believe Fields may not have been happy in the role he played last year:

We saw Fields do nothing but operate in the pocket at the Elite 11 and The Opening 7-on-7 tournament. His legs were not even part of the equation, yet they are a big weapon for him. The 221-pound prospect can clock a laser-timed 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Dilfer had a word of caution about how his future coordinators should use him on Saturdays.

“As long as they don’t turn him into a runner that passes,” Dilfer said. “He needs to be a passer that can run. The way college football is right now, his potential is limitless.”

Fields came to Columbus specifically for Ryan Day, IMO. He saw what he did with Haskins, and wants to be that type of QB. The amazing thing is, those couple of rushes Haskins had a game, can now go to the house under the right circumstances. Fields has run a legit, clocked, 4.51 40 and his last weight listing at UGA was nearly 230 lbs.

The kid is a freak.

I'm no expert on recruits from HS film but I see a bigger, stronger, faster Troy Smith that has, by all accounts, Troy Smith level arm talent and accuracy.

With the QB coaching and offensive system we have now???
