QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

All that comes into why I think Day should be trying to keep Tate as long as he can.

what makes anyone think Day isn't trying to keep both? Seems pretty obvious to me that was the intent; bring in the best guy you can so there are 4 in the QB room and then best man wins.

This all comes down to how Tate has chosen to react to something that is clearly in the team's best interests.

You made the comment earlier about Day having to possibly answer for something here. I still don't see it.

Oh I'll explain that. If Day eventually looses Tate, the media and alot of fans will question his tactics if Tate goes on to play better than Fields do. I think people would have been fine with it if it was like the Burrow situation. The media and fans got to see Burrow and Haskins compete.

If Tate does decide to leave before spring ball, there will be alot of questioning if Day made the right decision if Fields isn't lighting it up in the fall. If Tate goes on to play like Burrows did at LSU at the beginning of the season, I think alot of people will be say how couldn't Day keep this guy around. This isn't like a Can Newton situation at Florida, Tate isn't doing anything bad, it seems like a fixable situation at least to me.

Like as other posters have said, we have no clue what Day has done or hasn't done. The end result is basically what he will be judged on, good or bad. He could do everything he felt was right at the time and people will still be mad, that how sports work.

Fair enough.

Buckeye Nation has a large percentage of morons. They will bitch about anything, I'll give you that.

People are morons. They aren't the same player and Day doesn't run the same system that UFM does. If "people" can't or won't see and understand that, why does anyone care what they say?

If Tate leaves before spring ball and within the semester, he will not be a graduate transfer and likely would not be eligible to play this fall.....

I could see a scenario that Tate finds a place he wants to transfer to and he leaves the team but not school. He graduates and doesn't risk getting injured in spring ball.

He would only hurt himself in that scenario.

Also, Day could refuse to release him from his scholarship commitments, one of which, I"m sure, is participating in team workouts/meetings/competitions/etc.

Interesting...do they honor his scholarship this semester if he refuses to play football?

I think that would be up to the athletic department and the coaching staff.

I'm not sure what kind of background Tate comes from but maybe his family decides they will front the money for him to do that. The injury risk alone especially if he is transferring might be worth paying for his school for a semester.

So you're saying we cant keep them both by offering Tate a church?

Imo only way Day gets grief is if the xfer waiver doesnt go through or Fields turns out to be a bust.

I think if Fields has a rocky season and we miss the playoffs, while Tate has a good season and takes a team to the playoffs, Day will get some grief.

I was actually worried about that with how good Burrow looked in the start of the season. Getting bumped by LSU in the playoffs picture would have had the talk heads of ESPN, FS1, and the rest of the media material to argue about for weeks.

Especially since the Burrow example was completely unfounded worrying. After week 1 you knew Haskins was >>>Burrow. And that was with OSU playing Oregon State and LSU playing a top 10 at the time team. You could just see it.

As for worrying about Fields leading OSU to 9-3 and Tate leading WVU to 12-1....yea I'll worry about that when it happens.
