QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

We are very spoiled by Haskins. Fields looked stretched at 40 yards on that 98 yard touchdown. I liked what I saw for this stage, but I didn't see a clear winner in the starting QB job in this Spring Game.
Which is why Fields is the clear cut starter imo. If the guy who’s been in the program a full year longer didn’t separate himself, plus you know Fields can absolutely kill you with his legs in a live game, you go with that.

Fields’ passing will only continue to improve. The familiarity with the playbook and system is the issue, imo. The only real concern I had was the batted balls. I think I saw three.

But yes, we have been spoiled by Haskins.

No he didn’t, IMO. It looked like he just flicked it, to me. I’ve seen him make that same throw on a rope.

Football: Justin Fields has ‘only scratched the surface’ with Ohio State Spring Game

IMG_1019-1gnt7x7-530x376.jpg

The expectation for sophomore quarterback Justin Fields has been the same for awhile now.

It has been the same since he officially announced his transfer to Ohio State on Jan. 4. It has been the same since his waiver to play immediately went through on Feb. 8. It has been the same since right now, as Fields currently ranks No. 3 in Heisman Trophy odds according to Bovada.

Fields has not only been expected to win the starting job, but to perform as one of the best players in college football, even before having an official collegiate start.

This one wasn’t official, but Fields earned a start in Ohio State’s Spring Game, and the result was somewhat of a mixed bag, something Fields can agree with.

“If I had to grade myself out today, it would be like a C+,” Fields said. “I know I can be better, I’ve done better at practice, but of course there’s always room to improve, so I’m just gonna continue to work.”

While splitting reps with redshirt freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin on Team Gray, Fields completed 4-of-13 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, while earning 38 yards and another score on the ground.

Fields was behind center for four of Team Gray’s five scoring drives, one of which concluded with a 98-yard throw from Fields to senior wide receiver Binjimen Victor.

For Day, a throw like that was not enough for him to name a starter, or even a leader, at the quarterback position.

He said Fields and Baldwin, who completed 20 passes for 246 yards, both “flashed at times,” but that the position is “still a work in progress.”

“Justin, he can kind of create on the edge a little bit, so didn’t get a chance to see that as much. You know I thought Matthew made a couple really nice throws down the field,” Day said. “We’ll keep looking at it, but I thought both of them had positive days.”
