QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

2021 NFL "mock drafts":

The Lions will have to move on from Matthew Stafford at some point in the near future. It's clear that they can't win with him, so they're better off trading him for some draft picks and beginning anew.

Justin Fields made the egregious mistake of committing to a program with a talented, young quarterback in Jake Fromm, so he was blocked from starting. Fields, however, was able to transfer to Ohio State, where he'll likely dominate and emerge as a top-five prospect.

I sure hope he dominates and emerges as a "top 5" prospect......

Anyway the good news is that the consenus seems to be that in 2021 he'll be a 1st round pick. Needless to say, we sure are hoping that he plays that well for the 2 years too.

Justin Fields Expected Growing Pains On Path To Leadership

Justin-Fields-Ryan-Day-Spring-Game-1170x780.jpg

When quarterback Justin Fields arrived at Ohio State, he knew it would take some time for him to learn the offense.

A couple of weeks before he arrived, the current (and now former) Buckeye quarterbacks said that head coach Ryan Day’s offense takes at least a year to grasp.

Fields has been on campus for about five months now and been through one spring camp. Over that time, however, he apparently showed enough to make it clear to his competition that the job was Fields’ to lose.

But it wasn’t all perfection. In fact, there were some downright rough days of practice for Fields. He got better throughout the spring, but he had his ups and downs, which weren’t unexpected.

“It’s really different because some days you go out there and you do great, then the next day we have a bunch of new installation plays,” Fields said recently. “Coach [Ryan Day] said it before, it’s growing pains. There’s of course ups and downs, but overall, I think spring was great, and as time goes on, everybody will start getting more comfortable with each other. Quarterbacks and receivers, the timing and everything like that. We just have to continue getting better.”

The playbook is the main thing that people pointed to when wondering if Fields would be able to perform at the necessary level. But knowing the playbook is just one aspect of being able to control the offense. There is also an understanding of what his receivers are doing and the best place to put the football. Nobody was better than Dwayne Haskins at ball placement, so Fields will have some accurate shoes to fill.

“The biggest thing, just getting the hang of the playbook and the receivers,” Fields said. “Because a lot of the concepts are the same, but the route running and just the little details of it, so once I get that done, it will take me to a whole different level and I can really start showing what I can do.”

SKULL SESSION: URBAN MEYER RECALLS HIS HIGHS AND LOWS, JUSTIN FIELDS WORKS ON POCKET PRESENCE, AND ZACH SMITH BOMBS ED WARINNER

POCKET PRESENCE
. Justin Fields is quite a bit more mobile than Dwayne Haskins and tucked the ball fairly often his freshman season at Georgia, but that doesn't mean we should expect happy feet from the new Buckeye signal caller this season.

Fields is more than a capable runner and will do it when he needs to, but he came to Ohio State to throw the ball, and he spent a solid portion of his offseason working on his pocket presence.

From Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch

When he visited Kennesaw, Georgia, his hometown north of Atlanta, for two weeks this month, Fields had more than a half-dozen workouts with private quarterbacks coach Ron Veal in which he focused on quickening the steps in his dropback. A dropback in which Fields quickly backpedals into the pocket is a development that allows him to go through his progressions and read defensive coverages faster.

“If your drop is slow, you only probably have got one read,” Veal said.

Making more reads means identifying more potential receiving targets.

“He wants to rely on his arm and his mind to make these reads and use his feet when necessary,” Veal said. “His feet are a weapon that I’m sure Ohio State will use periodically, but he doesn’t want to make that the main part of his game.”

...

But Fields’ growth as a passer, particularly his footwork, also holds a practical element. While Fields is behind center at Ohio State, there will be no shortage of talented skill players for him to find.

“The main thing with any offense is getting the ball out of your hands,” Veal said. “They got too many athletes not to have it. So we don’t need a quarterback sitting back and holding the ball. We need him getting the ball out of his hands and into these playmakers’ hands.”

Watching Braxton Miller ruin defenses with his legs never got old, but neither did watching Dwayne Haskins dropping 40-yard bombs into Terry McLaurin's lap. Here's hoping Fields can do a little of both.

Six for Saturday: Buckeyes Primed For Stardom In 2019

Last year, the Buckeyes had a star emerge at quarterback as Dwayne Haskins set all kinds of Ohio State passing records. The year before, it was freshman running back JK Dobbins.

In 2016, you saw Malik Hooker, Curtis Samuel, Marshon Lattimore, Nick Bosa and I can’t even remember who else become stars.

It happens every year. New stars take over and become household names in the college football world.

This year will be no different. There is no shortage of possible new stars for Ohio State in 2019, but for our purposes we’ll keep it to just six or so names.

Justin Fields – Quarterback, Soph.
With Justin Fields’ skill set, Ryan Day’s offense, and the skill players surrounding him, it is almost a given that Ohio State’s new starting quarterback is going to be a star. No, he has never started a game, but that didn’t stop Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Cardale Jones, or Dwayne Haskins. Talent and preparation are in place, but it will still come down to execution. It’s not unreasonable to expect 3,500 yards of total offense for Fields, as well as some truly spectacular moments.

PRESSER BULLETS: RYAN DAY PROVIDES SUMMER UPDATES ON OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
  • Day said it is important for Justin Fields to spend time throwing to his receivers during the summer on his own because the coaches aren't allowed to do that with him until fall camp. "He's done a good job so far. He's been working really hard in the weight room," Day said, but also said there's no substitute for his lack of experience.
  • On new quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich: "He's got a huge job in front of him," referring to having to work with a brand new Ohio State quarterback, but "I brought him in for a reason."
  • On Gunnar Hoak: "He's going to come in, he's going to get reps with the ones and he's going to compete for the starting job." Said Justin Fields didn't win the starting job in the spring, but the real competition begins in the preseason.

Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day With Some June Updates on the Buckeyes

+ Physically, God gave Justin Fields a ton of gifts, but they can’t substitute experience. There is film, workouts, and throwing on his own with his receivers, and then preseason camp in an effort to prepare him. He has been doing a good job in the weight room. He studies film on his own. “It can’t just be the eight hours a week.”

+ The way quarterbacks transfer in today’s game has forced the the program to stay alert. The quarterback position is planned out years in advance and when they transfer, it creates unrest in that timeline. The transferring that goes on is “not great for college football in a lot of areas.” They have done a great job of filling the quarterback room back up.

Dear Woody,

If you are up there my man we are going to need you more than anytime since 2002. PLEASE let this kid be good and stay healthy or we are fucked.

Thanks

The end

Maybe im in the minority but for some reason I feel like we will be ok if we had to go beyond QB1 something about backups having to step up in Buckeye history has me feeling at ease

I feel you...but I just am, you probably were not all that at ease with Cardale coming in either, or JT for Braxton

You were?

I am always leery of a backup coming in because they generally are a back up for a reason. Those guys were recruited by OSU and turned out to be pretty damn good.

The backups this year were not recruited by OSU originally (for a reason) and couldn't win the starting job at a place like Kentucky (validating why OSU passed originally).

To me it's apples and man hole covers trying to use 2014's incredible depth as a predictor of how all back ups will go for all time.

I could dress up a hot dog vendor from the 'Shoe in an OSU uniform and he'd be from central Ohio, have OSU ties and be a backup. That doesn't make him Cardale Jones.

I just have confidence in the staff to be able to alter the gameplan and cater it to the QB who is playing... heck, I'd have faith in Chris Chugalong
