QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

You were?

I am always leery of a backup coming in because they generally are a back up for a reason. Those guys were recruited by OSU and turned out to be pretty damn good.

The backups this year were not recruited by OSU originally (for a reason) and couldn't win the starting job at a place like Kentucky (validating why OSU passed originally).

To me it's apples and man hole covers trying to use 2014's incredible depth as a predictor of how all back ups will go for all time.

I could dress up a hot dog vendor from the 'Shoe in an OSU uniform and he'd be from central Ohio, have OSU ties and be a backup. That doesn't make him Cardale Jones.
Totally agree with your basic point.

But in fairness, I believe he wasn’t a starter at Kentucky in part because their roster almost forced the staff to go with a mobile QB. At least that’s what I think I read.

Regardless, if Fields goes down its likely going to cost a few games. That’s the case for most schools in most years though.

I may be in the minority but I was fully confident in JT coming in for Braxton. This situation? Not so much.

We know he can run. Jury is still out on his passing, IMHO. It helps that the WR group is so talented. Need them to bail him out and make plays. Don't think the coaches will rely on Justin's arm the way they did Dwayne's. I expect to see a lot of "get the ball out quick" plays and let playmakers do their thing. If the passing game comes together.....LOOK OUT. If it never does materialize, I expext another top 10 finish and just missing the CFP (Again).

I think (for whatever the fuck that’s worth) Day’s comments yesterday are dead on balls accurate. We NEED JK to ball out for the first half of the season. We’ll lead with the infantry while Fields gets things sorted and then look the hell out. He’ll get there. At a minimum, he’s a much faster JTB with a better arm. I’ll take that.

Let's be honest, he has 11 games to get it kicked into high gear.

That 12th one is the one that matters

I don't like the idea of a playbook filled with QB runs when you're that thin at the position. Dobbins and company in the backfield and use his arm.

I certainly wouldn't advocate that either. Two thoughts, though, just from the little uga and tOSU spring game footage I've seen: 1) Fields has escape velocity speed that can get him out of trouble. Yes, we want him to work through his progressions, but I'm fine with him saving a sack and getting a first down whenever it's there. 2) I don't think he'd take as much punishment as JTB even on designed runs. He can get the corner and a few yards and then get out of bounds or break free at the next level.

Helps that you guys will probably have him in Shotgun 85-90% of the time too. Gives him 2-3 more seconds to work through progressions.

Yeah, I read at some point that we were installing under center pkgs this spring. Not really sure why other than short yardage situations.
Ability to use deception that just isn't there in the gun is one reason. Shotgun really takes away misdirection.

Also, under center plays hit faster than shotgun runs. The QB read that JTB ran was helpful to keep the defense from pinning their ears back. With Haskins it became much more difficult to keep the D honest, because he wasn't running much. Staying under center will be a huge help for the OL as well. They won't have to block nearly as long as in the shotgun.

SKULL SESSION: RYAN DAY PREFERS OHIO STATE TO THE PATRIOTS, JUSTIN FIELDS IS A TOP-10 QUARTERBACK, AND DAWAND JONES LEAVES THE HARDWOOD

EIGHT IS GREAT.
We're in the thick of the Subjective Lists portion of the offseason (not to be confused with Watch List Season, which comes in mid July).

It's that wonderful time of the year sports words writers all across these great United States try their hand at ranking or listing pretty much anything based solely on their own opinions and perceptions. Then, the beloved readers get to tell them how wrong they are in the comments section.

I'm not going to even try to pretend we don't do it. We've listed the most memorable games, games we wish we could replay – hell, we even ranked roller coasters. And all of those got over 100 comments because folks. love. lists.

That said, this list comes from Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports who took on the tall task of ranking all 130 (!!!) projected starting quarterbacks ahead of the 2019 season. And the latest Buckeye ball-thrower cracked the top-10.

8. Justin Fields, Ohio State

Not only does new coach Ryan Day have to maintain Ohio State’s dominance in the Big Ten, but the first-year coach also starts his career in Columbus having to replace a first-round pick at quarterback (Dwayne Haskins). However, Day’s quarterback room isn’t hurting for talent despite the transfers of Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin this offseason. Fields signed with Georgia as a five-star prospect during the 2018 recruiting class and received playing time in 12 games. The Georgia native flashed potential in his limited snaps, completing 27 of 39 throws for 328 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 266 yards and four scores on the ground. With Jake Fromm entrenched as the starter, Fields decided to transfer following the 2018 season. Talent certainly isn’t an issue for Fields. How quickly will Day get the sophomore playing up to his potential in 2019?

Eight is perfectly fine for a guy that's never started a college football team, especially considering the seven quarterbacks ahead of him include two national champions, two more runners up and a quarterback who was projected as the top quarterback in the draft if he would have declared this year.

If Fields' name is still among those at the end of the season, the Buckeyes will have done just fine.
