QB Matthew Baldwin (transfer to TCU)

I love this offer and verbal. Kid has got all the tools. Wiltfong really likes this kid and thinks he may be one of the fastest risers in the country. Delivery is smooth. Running style is very JT-esque which is good enough. Can already make some of the tougher throws like back shoulders and deep outs. Staff couldn't risk being left at the altar by Jones. If Baldwin ends up being the only QB in this class I won't be upset. Obviously I want to see Jones in S&G but I'd rather have Baldwin than potentially nobody. This isn't another take like Stephen Collier or Taylor Graham. I expect this kid to come in and eventually compete.

Glad you said this, because the two names you mentioned were who I was thinking about when I saw his commitment. Looking forward to seeing him in this offense, though I don't want him ran like JT

I didn't know much about him but I went back and watched a little bit of his film and I must say I'm excited for this guy. What is amazing is that he's been a starter for just ONE YEAR and it's incredible the mechanics that he has for being so inexperienced.

I see a kid who has one of the best foundations I've seen in a HS QB... His base stays shoulder width or slightly past shoulder width at all times, He moves in the pocket but doesn't typically scramble, and he has experience with the read option looks. I also like how he seems to be very good at faking a zone read handoff and then pulling it back and hitting the WR running a flag route (seems to be one of his favorite throws). What an underrated kid and I didn't expect to be impressed by his film but for being a 1 year starter this is perfect.

Let him RS next year and then probably sit behind Tate or Haskins in his RS freshman year then who knows what he's capable of.

Agreed on most counts. I want to go back and watch again as I was looking at footwork and throwing motion mostly. No question he put some of those balls right on the money and in stride.

One thing that I did notice was that he seemed to focus on his primary option quite a bit. That’s why I want to go back to watch a second time. Just something that I noticed... It could very well be that his primary was pretty much open on those throws so why look off, but I’ll be going back to see if he’s looking anyone off.

That said, how common is it that a HS QB is going through multiple reads and looking defenders off his targets? Serious question.

But mechanically, he looks pretty solid and you can’t argue with the results. Safe to say that he wasn’t a camper and thus the rating? He does look more polished than a number of kids who are higher rated... but that could be due to the color of my glasses.

Great vision, anticipates, quick release and hits guys in stride.

I'm sure at the HS level, QBs aren't yet learning the nuances of looking off defenses yet because they don't have to. If you're good enough, you can get the ball to the WR regardless if you're staring down your WR from the snap. Reading defenses comes usually at the college game, when defenses are disguising themselves more, and athletes are more advanced

I wonder if taking Baldwin now, indicates that the staff is taking 2 QBs regardless of Jones' decision, or if this is truly a setup at a replacement. Its interesting because both players are so different in styles, I would think that Meyer would bring in another DT QB.

Just one game but 80% completions and 7.4 per attempt is promising. I’m starting to think what makes this offense really dangerous is this type of passing efficiency with an explosive ground game...the weapons seem to be in place to make it happen. Really happy Matthew is a Buckeye!
That's why I think a kid like Haskins can succeed. Run JK, and have him get the ball quickly to the speed players in mismatches on the perimeter or across the middle
