I guess I am pretty amazed at the general nature of this discussion when we are talking about 3 unproven QB's at this point. Where one will or will not play is going to be determined by how they do or don't perform this year.

As for recruiting what is wrong with bringing in the best available talent on a yearly basis, at least one? Although we have been highly successful lately in terms of wins and losses, we have not had a barn burner or highly rated QB recruit lead us for quite some time. Smith and Zwick will be the first in recent memory.

I also think that bringing in another solid QB can do nothing but push the guys in front of them just like happens at any position on the field. UM seems to land a top notch QB almost every year. No reason why OSU can't.

If zwick lights it up this year ,and I think he will, smith is a transfer possibility. If zwick has enough rough spots and smith gets some game time, smith will probably stick it out for atleast another year. I have gotten the impression that smith won't be happy with the mcMullen role on the team and I can't blame him. I just believe zwick is the most over-all talented and ready qb we have.

As far as recruiting qb's this year and next. I think one is plenty(sanchez!). 2 is the way to go if the 2 guys are the teams top 2 choices and are just too good to pass up. I prefer having some separation space between starters-backups-and future starters, at every position and especially qb. The 2 guys next year(schliscter-hartline) are seemingly very possible commits to the BUCKS, unless OSU has a true glut at qb. This is why I prefer taking 1 qb this year and get as many as possible next year and not recruit another qb for a couple years. On a side note; the 2 qb's next year seem like they physically aren't ready to push for starting time real soon and if they see it that way, they would not mind redshirting and possibly even grey-shirting(hartline?).

I don't see Smith as that strong of a transfer possibility. Mainly, this is because there are remaining opportunities at other postions. From everything I've seen and heard, Smith has enough athletic gifts to be able to move on to the next level. No matter how good of a QB he is though, he will never be an NFL QB. NFL teams simply don't want QBs of his size, no matter what their skills are. He will likely be viewed as a Randle-El-type player, and the best place for him to showcase those type of abilities is Ohio State.

The key to this whole thing is Boeckman. I've heard he's done really well so far, and the faster he proves himself to be a capable QB, the faster Smith (assuming he's not already the starting QB) can be placed at another position.

As far as the recruiting end of this, I say if the Bucks can get 2 QBs to commit this year, take 'em. It's not prudent to put any eggs in next year's basket, because nobody's sure yet what next year will bring. Many point to Hartline and Schlichter, but they're not money in the bank yet. By this time next year, they may not even be the two best QBs in the state. And even if they are, that does not guarantee they will be offered (see Brian Hoyer). There are several talented QBs giving the Bucks a strong look this year, and they need to strike while the iron is hot, because there's no guarantee next year will bring the same luxury.

sanchez is a stud

not that we would want to make a habit of it, but copying scUM here wouldnt be a terrible idea. Ever year they sign a top flight QB, and every year, their QB play is better than ours (save Navarre). Between Schoenroft and Sanchez, Ill take Sanchez. Not that we should be in aposition to turn away elite 11 QB's but after watching Sanchez's film, we wont be needing another QB if we are fortunate enough to land sanchez.

i say sign sanchez and get the better between hartline and Schlister next season.

I think there is something to learn from the recruitment of tailbacks the last three four years. My point being you just never no when someone is going to transfer or not qualify or go pro early or just not pan out. We all no that Elite 11 quarterbacks with serious interest in OSU is not an every year thing. Take what you can get, when you can get it.

free dispatch article on tOSU QB recruiting

It hasn’t been a good month for Ohio State in the quarterback recruiting department. The Buckeyes lost Joe Bauserman to baseball and Mark Sanchez to Southern California.

That places much more importance on Rob Schoenhoft of Cincinnati St. Xavier, who reportedly will decide soon between OSU and Michigan.

Ohio State was hopeful of landing Sanchez, ranked the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the nation (and 10 th overall) by Rivals.com. He is 6 feet 3, 215 pounds and threw for 2,600 yards and 29 touchdowns with four interceptions last season.

Two of his Mission Viejo, Calif., teammates — offensive lineman Kevin Bemoll and defensive lineman Ryan Williams — already had committed to OSU.

But several Web sites, including ESPN.com and Rivals100.com, reported Sanchez committed to USC last weekend.

"I felt most comfortable at USC and felt they gave me the best chance to reach my ultimate goal of playing on Sundays," Sanchez said on WeAreSC.com.

Meanwhile, Bauserman signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in June. The Tallahassee, Fla., native had committed to the Buckeyes’ 2005 class but said he would consider playing professional baseball if he was drafted.

The right-handed pitched was taken in the fourth round and signed a contract that included a $300,000 signing bonus.

Bauserman was assigned to the Bradenton (Fla.) Pirates, a rookie-league team. In two starts, he is 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA.

Bradenton’s season runs through Aug. 28, and there was speculation that Bauserman could still enroll at OSU for winter quarter and go through spring practice, at least.

But reached last week in Bradenton, Bauserman made it clear he has cast his lot with baseball for the foreseeable future.

"I haven’t thought about it," he said of a football future. "That would be on down the road, not like two months from now. If anything, it would have to be something like I was done with baseball, like I’d have to be released."

Bauserman, 6-2 and 225 pounds, said Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel has told him he has a scholarship waiting if he ever switches sports. Other quarterbacks who tried baseball and returned to successful college football careers include John Elway, Chris Weinke and Akili Smith.

"(Baseball) is what I chose to do," Bauserman said. "It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up."

With Bauserman and Sanchez out of the mix, the Buckeyes have a strong need for another quarterback in the pipeline. OSU has Todd Boeckman as its only quarterback on scholarship past the 2006 season, when third-year sophomores Justin Zwick and Troy Smith will be gone.

Schoenhoft, 6-5 and 225, threw for 1,100 yards and 12 TDs last season.

The best thing that could happen for our QB recruiting is that either Zwick or Smith blows up over the next 2 years and has a career that leads to a high draft pick. You know QB prospects have to be looking at our less than stellar history of signal callers to and in the NFL. Also have to figure guys like Petey are quick to point that out. We desperately need someone to break that mold.

Who is our highest profile pro QB in the last 10 years? Kent Graham? Mike Tomczak running a close second? I'm not crapping on us, nor am I on terrific guys like Joe Germaine, Bobby Hoying and Craig Krenzel -- but it's an issue, and clearly one that Sanchez took into consideration. In fact, from the quote above, he almost makes it sound like the deciding factor.

I still gotta believe that Zwick is going to have a nice 3 years here. I remember when he signed on and became the defacto class recruiter.

I have to believe he has done everything asked to put himself into a position to succeed, and more. I would, if given that chance. I'm sure he did as well.

I think this year might be a little rocky, or even a lot rocky, but he has to go through those growing pains that every QB goes through, once they actually are throwin into the fire. I hope everyone has a little patience with him. I could see a situation where we lose 3 games this year, and a lot may have to do with QB play. But I'm thinking long term and will give either him or T.Smith the benefit of the doubt for this year, in hopes of greater things in the future!

he pointed to how long Zwick has left at tOSU. He also said that LSU is after him hard.
How many QB recruits has this thinking cost the school (maybe Sanchez) ? Does it still apply now that Zwick has "been exposed" (BN rationale)?

Did anyone else catch the comment during the game that Zwick's presence may have cost the school: "Henne, Morelli and a few of the other Midwest QBs that are starting around the nation"?

Next year could be interesting with Miles, Kirbus, Hartline, and some national guys.

Hartline

What are the chances that both Hartlines could play WR in college, and how realistic is it (would he do it, could he do it)?

It just seems that bringing in 2 more QBs next year, on top of the 2+ this year (Rob S. & C. Jackson from Ely) - someone is going to want to move or get antsy.

Maybe DB is a better fit for some of them?

Jackson is by no means a certainty...besides, last I heard is we're recruiting him as an athlete, not QB.

We're recruiting him the same as we did Smith, as an Athlete with a shot at QB. (From what I remember of HH saying once)

True, but my point is that CJ is not necessarily a lock at QB. Also, say we do take Jackson in addition to Schoenhoft and let him play QB. That would give us the following QBs for the 2005 season:

Smith (Jr)
Zwick (Jr)
Boeckman (RS Fr?)
Schoenhoft (Fr)
Jackson (Fr)

Five seems like a lot, but you want at least four QBs. Hell, with Zwick hurt, should something happen to Smith, we'll have to burn Boeckman's redshirt and will have only two walk-ons (Kacsandi and Ciepiela) in reserve. So, you want available depth at the single most important position on the team.

Then if we should take two more QBs for 2006, that list would look like:

Smith (Sr)
Zwick (Sr)
Boeckman (So)
Schoenhoft (RS Fr)
Jackson (RS Fr)
Hartline (Fr)
Schlichter (Fr)

At first, that looks very heavy at QB, until you realize that 2006 is Smith and Zwick's final year, which leads to the QB list for 2007:

Boeckman (Jr)
Schoenhoft (So)
Jackson (So)
Hartline (RS Fr)
Schlichter (RS Fr)

Five QBs (actually more likely four QBs with CJ as an athlete and emergency QB), is not overloaded by any stretch. We want at least four QBs aboard when Smith and Zwick leave, and if we go as laid out above, all of them will have had at least two years in the system.
