QB Stephen Collier (Official Thread)

Wonder if he transfers to another school now that he has graduated? If JT stays he's sure to be the starter, if JT leaves he has Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell to compete with. I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred somewhere to be a starter at a smaller school.

Likely a graduate assistant. He graduated in 3 years with a purpose. Meyer will let him stick him around to start a career in coaching if he chooses....his scholarship will not be picked up next year....but I think most already understood that.

This is similar to Kenny Guiton, who has also started a career in coaching, and was a GA under Herman at Houston last year as a WR coach.

He can become a GA after his playing days are over. Why wouldn't he want to at least play a year, even if at a smaller school, before moving into coaching (or whichever career he chooses)?

To get a head start on it...he won't get a paid coaching gig (in college or NFL) until he does some GA work...just how it works for guys moving from playing career right into coaching (think Richard NcNutt/Kenny Guiton) and there are a lot of other examples outside OSU.

Collier could continue playing, but he just doesn't have the tools to play beyond college. He would have a great opportunity to get GA work at tOSU or elsewhere at age of 21 putting him in excellent shape going forward....and again, that's if Collier sees coaching in his future. The overall point is, he graduated in 3 years with a plan in place...he has some open doors ahead of him. He's been great on the sidelines this year though...he's been a de facto GA all season anyways....

I get your point, but like you said he's been a de facto GA this season so he already has a head start. I have no idea what his goals are but it just makes sense to me if he still loves the game, he should transfer somewhere he can play and enjoy it before entering the workforce. There's plenty of time to get a job

Former Lee County standout Stephen Collier earns degree early from Ohio State

Quarterback earns bachelor’s degree in two and a half years

Former Lee County High School student Stephen Collier walked across the stage last Sunday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio and accepted his bachelor’s degree in strategic communications.

.
“It was a blessing for sure,” Collier said. “I took the books seriously.”

He has two years of eligibility remaining and he has already been accepted to graduate school. He plans to pursue a graduate degree in kinesiology and sports management.

“I have thought about being an AD,” he said.

He said it hasn’t always been easy. Most semesters, he took the maximum class load of 18 hours — even during the summer, which is when most athletes take time off.

“I knew academics was larger than anything football could provide,” Collier said. “A lot of student-athletes take lighter class loads during the season because you are trying to dedicate time to studying as well as to the team. You figure, you’re practicing six days a week and on two of those, you’re out of state, which makes it hard.

“I was well-positioned to get my degree. I wasn’t trying to take it easy. I wanted to go at it as hard as I could.”

Best wishes going forward for the young man. Everything I've seen or heard about him shows that he has been a true Buckeye and team player through and through. It will be interesting to see if he heads towards coaching, he couldn't have better mentors than Coach Meyer and staff.

Thank you Stephen, you didn't see the field much but thank you for being a Buckeye and part of the family

I had mentioned this would be happening a little while back. I give credit all-around on this. The coaching staff let Collier know he'd be welcome in some capcity if he earned his degree in 3 years, and Collier for knocking out full course loads while still being active with the football team.

Not sure if Stephen gets a coveted GA spot, or if they bring him into the video coordinator room where they also have staff. Either way he will be involved and gaining valuable experience for his sports management major. He gets a head-start on his post graduation employment, Ohio State gets a needed scholarship for an incoming recruit, and all parties are happy.

Best of luck Stephen....
