QB Stephen Collier (Official Thread)

I think Urb and Tom Herman are pickier than Tressel and company when it comes to QBs. I love Guiton and I'm glad he's a Buckeye, but I don't think he would have been offered by the new regime.

Im not comparing the two players level of talent, just the similarities in their recruitment. They both worked hard to get a big time offer.

Collier, who was born in Marietta but moved ...
Ooops, he moved out of the cornfields of Ohio. My bad.

Marietta, OH doesn't have cornfields. As a matter of fact, it doesn't have much of anything.

*I would imagine that stowfan is correct about it being Marietta, GA and not OH FWIW.

Stephen Collier: Ohio State lands Georgia sleeper QB
By Michael Carvell

After completing an exhaustive nationwide search for a quarterback, Ohio State landed a little-known prospect from South Georgia on Friday evening.

Lee County High School?s Stephen Collier committed to Ohio State on the spot after being offered a football scholarship on Friday. He picked the Buckeyes over Wake Forest and Cincinnati.

?They flipped every stone, looked at a bunch of quarterbacks, and told me ultimately that I was going to be their guy,? Collier told the AJC. ?That?s when they gave me the offer and asked if I wanted to be a Buckeye. I said yes because I knew that?s where I wanted to be.?

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was a low-profile QB prospect in recruiting circles, but part of that had to do with playing in rural Georgia at Lee County, located in the suburbs of Albany and 170 miles south of Atlanta.

However, Collier?s popularity had been on the rise over the last month. The 3-star prospect was recently selected to participate in the Elite 11 Quarterback camp. Last year as a junior, Collier passed for 1,887 yards and 23 touchdowns, while rushing for 485 yards and 11 touchdowns.

?It has been an unbelievable journey,? Collier said. ?Living in Lee County, this isn?t a frequent stop for recruiters. So I don?t know how it happened, how my name got out there. I thank Coach Trent Dilfer of the Elite 11 camp. He has helped get my name out there. I think that has been huge.

?I just thank anybody that had to do with my success. It all started with my coaches at Lee County. They?ve been working with me for so long, and turned me into a different player. I mean, if you would?ve seen me in the ninth grade, you would?ve thought that I needed to quit the sport.?

Collier made a huge impression on Urban Meyer when he threw at Ohio State camp a couple of weeks ago. Since that day, Meyer told Collier to give him a call every three days to see where everything stood. The Buckeyes had Collier near the top of the list but wanted to evaluate other quarterbacks.

?I talked to (Meyer) on Thursday, and he just said they had one more camp today to make sure there wasn?t anybody else that came out of nowhere like me,? Collier said. ?I guess they made up their mind today.?

Buckeyes' big get

Stephen Collier threw for 1,887 yards and rushed for 485 more, accounting for 34 TDs (23 passing and 11 rushing), plus six two-point conversions last season for Lee County, and he was recently named a RISE Elite 11 finalist by ESPN.

LEESBURG — With more than 20 Division I offers already sitting on the table — and likely many more to come — Stephen Collier could’ve spent his senior season being courted and wooed by nearly every major college football program in the country.

But Friday, Collier sent a message to all but one of those schools: don’t bother.

The Lee County High School rising senior confirmed to The Herald late Friday evening that he’s headed to Ohio State to play for two-time BCS National Champion head coach Urban Meyer, ending a fast and furious recruiting process that saw Collier go from one of the Top 100 QBs in the nation to one of the Top 10 — all in just a few months.

“It’s been a whirlwind, it really has,” Collier said. “(Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom) Herman, my primary recruiter, and I really hit it off and had great chemistry. And coach Meyer ... well .. he’s coach Meyer. His reputation speaks for itself. It jut feels awesome to be a Buckeye right now.”

Collier, a 4.0 student, said his list of offers included Harvard — and it was hard to turn that one down.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s Harvard — it doesn’t get much better than that from an educational standpoint, but when I look to my future (in hopes of one day playing in the pros), I felt Ohio State was best for me,” said Collier, who is undecided on a major. “It was a family decision — and my family really loved Ohio State and how they were treated during our visit — and we felt this was a top-tier program and an offer we didn’t want to wait around to think about.”

Collier, who was born in Marietta but moved to Union, Ky., when he was five, actually grew up 2 1/2 hours from Ohio State’s campus before moving back to Georgia and landing in Leesburg when he was 13 after his mother’s job required a transfer to the Peach State. He said he wasn’t going to wait on offers from the school he once rooted for as a youngster — Georgia — and was fully committed to the Buckeyes.

“100 percent I’m going to Ohio State,” Collier said when asked if there was any chance he would change his mind should the Bulldogs or another high-profile school give him an offer between now and when he officially signs with the Buckeyes on National Signing Day in February.

Good to hear that cornfields are an upgrade! So long as he is headed to Columbus, OH and not Columbus, GA, it is still a great day for the buckeyes.
