Ohio State football: Tate Martell ready to challenge for starting job

ARLINGTON, Texas — In the locker room after Ohio State’s 24-7 win against USC in the Cotton Bowl, the most-popular player from an interview standpoint was someone who didn’t play a single snap in 2017.

Tate Martell, the heralded quarterback recruit who redshirted, spent a large portion of the 30-minute interview period surrounded by reporters curious about his first season in Columbus and his thoughts on what’s next.

A short walk over, the heir apparent at quarterback was also holding court. Dwayne Haskins is viewed by many as the favorite to start for Ohio State next season, especially after replacing an injured J.T. Barrett and leading the Buckeyes to a comeback win at Michigan. He made perfectly clear that he views himself as the most-likely candidate to win the job and will approach the spring as such.

“I’m going to attack it as though I’m the guy and I’m the starter,” Haskins said.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Urban uses Tate at QB in short yardage situations. It obviously worked at UF and I can't see Urban abandoning the run option. I know many people hate that thought but it a viable option. On the other hand when Cardale was the QB we relied more on the RB and that is what won us the CFB Championship.

I guess we will have to wait and see....

TATE MARTELL HINTS AT A POSSIBLE POSITION CHANGE FOR 2018 IF HE DOESN'T WIN THE QUARTERBACK JOB

Tate Martell's redshirt is officially gone, and we could have a quarterback controversy in Columbus.

After the departure of fifth-year senior J.T. Barrett, many assumed Dwayne Haskins would be the next man up. After all, Haskins has been No. 2 on the depth chart all season and led the Buckeyes to a comeback victory against Michigan after Barrett left the game with a knee injury.

Haskins is the easy favorite to win the job next year, but Martell isn't conceding that battle just yet.

Martell told Cleveland.com he plans to compete for that starting spot.

"I mean what else would I want?" [Martell] said. "I didn't come here to sit on the bench."

I like the attitude, but I'd prefer to see a dedicated #2 guy, in case he's needed. Remember when Michigan tried to make Devin Gardner a wide receiver, and then Robinson got hurt? They had to put in some bloke - I forget who. But didn't they lose that game? At Nebraska? Yeah - Russell Bellomy.

My point is that I'd prefer to have a back-up capable of winning the game if we need him to. But who wouldn't?

I think we see both Haskins and Martell. It reminds me of when Urban had Leake and Tebow the same year. Both have different skill sets and having both would be just dynamic. Florida did win the championship over us that year as well...
