QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Football: Tate Martell’s skillset could lend itself to other role on 2018 Ohio State team

Ohio State cannot have two signal-callers on the field at the same time, but it might have two quarterbacks.

Head coach Urban Meyer said Monday that while the suggestion a quarterback play receiver is thrown out often with no real logic behind it, the plan might work in redshirt freshman Tate Martell’s case.

“Tate’s got an incredible skillset,” Meyer said. “There is some conversation about that because he is a gifted guy.”

The quarterback battle has been between three players but always seems to come down to two names: Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins.

Left out has been the dynamic Martell, the No. 56 overall player and second-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class. Martell — known more for being an elusive, shifty quarterback than a true pocket-passer — seems to always be named third by the coaching staff due to his lack of experience.

But his placement on the depth chart might not necessarily prevent him from earning snaps in the fall. Martell emphasized after the Cotton Bowl and last Wednesday that he has no plans to transfer and will be on the field, saying “I didn’t come here to sit on the bench.”

Martell said that even if he does not start, packages will be made to get him on the field at the same time as the starting quarterback.

Each quarterback came into the spring possessing clear attributes that set them apart.

No one on the team throws the ball as well as Haskins, who could provide it with the true pocket-passing quarterback it hasn’t had in years. Burrow might be the best dual-threat quarterback, with an arm better than Martell and more mobility than Haskins.

Martell?

“Obviously you’re going to look at the running ability,” Martell said with a laugh. “I guess it’s just being able to make plays, make people miss and stuff like that. I mean that’s where I’m at my best. Just adding that element to the game where you’ve got to add an extra guy to guard me when it comes to running the ball where it takes them out of pass coverage.”

In an Open Competition, Tate Martell Keeps Getting Better

Tate-Martell-Throwing.jpg

here have been nine Ohio State football practices this spring and in each of them there have been three quarterbacks sharing the reps equally.

On the one hand, this concerns Urban Meyer, who wants to see somebody seize the job. On the other, he likes to see the competition that comes from a three-man battle.

The race to replace J.T. Barrett is comprised of fourth-year junior Joe Burrow, who may be the best leader; redshirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins, who was the hero against Michigan; and redshirt freshman Tate Martell, who is the best runner of the group but has the least experience.

Martell knew when he signed with Ohio State that he would likely enter the 2018 season trailing Burrow and Haskins in experience, which is why all he has asked for this spring is a real opportunity to compete for the job.

He has gotten that so far.

“I feel good with where I’m at and what I’m doing and the progress that I’m making,” Martell said. “Obviously, I was hoping that after a guy left who was here like J.T., that there would be an open competition. Obviously, like I’ve said before, I didn’t come here to sit on the bench.”

There may not be many outside the program giving Martell a legitimate shot to win the job. Many view this as a competition between Haskins and Burrow, but if that were true, they would be receiving more of the repetitions in practice.

When offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day was asked recently if Martell was really in this race, he gave a very matter-of-fact — and common sense — answer.

“I understand the question, but really whoever’s playing best is going to play,” he said. “So anybody who’s playing at quarterback, if he’s the best quarterback, he’s going to play. So no, it’s not just a two-person race. Whoever’s out there moving the team down the field is going to play.

“So obviously the guys are competing and they’re working at that. So no, there’s nothing predetermined. There’s not a guy who’s been the starter like J.T.’s been here before. It’s a competition. Just like anywhere else that doesn’t have a quarterback who’s coming back, these guys have to earn everything they get.”

When you consider the skill sets of each quarterback, there are some significant differences. Haskins is the drop-back passer; Burrow is the closest thing to Barrett on the roster; and Martell is the most explosive runner of the group. While Day and the OSU offense can certainly work with Martell’s athletic abilities, it’s another aspect of his demeanor that Day really likes.

“Tate’s dynamic with his feet,” he said. “But he’s really competitive. If you’re picking out a game, whatever game that is, he’s gonna try to find a way to win and take you out. So that’s a huge deal for us, is guys that are competitors. He has that competitive fire in him. So he’s only a year in, but he’s making a lot of progress and he’s on the come.”

same here but I have a very clear reason(s)why; well rounded skill set (run and pass) as well as the Tebus/JT winners attitude or whatever you want to call "it".
Trying to run like either of those guys with his size, will get him sidelined in a hurry, IMO. Tebow was a very large man for a QB, and was essentially a FB posing as a QB. Barrett was known for having huge legs to take a beating. Tate is by all accounts a pretty small kid, and has a pretty small frame, no matter what coach Mick does. Idk think using him as a battering ram on short yardages will be advantageous to OSU, leave that to Weber, Williams, etc. I like Martell in space, not running directly at defenses. His game is more Manziel and Mayfield(on field comparisons) than it is Tebow and Barrett, IMO.

Baker also had Sermon to pound inside, although they got too cute in the playoffs in short yardage.

Tebow was the inside power, flanked by speed to work the outsides. Cam would've Continued that.

Precisely.
Tate has the best of both worlds, if he were to start in the next few years, speed on the outside(regardless of who returns and is in the WR rotation), inside size with our RBs, and also the size at WR that Manziel had while at A&M

clearly

Just because he can't run it the same way Tebow and JT did doesn't mean he can't be an effective dual threat QB.

Tate has packed on a ton of muscle. His legs are quite large now. Not much difference IMO than JTs.

The problem for Tate is that, if he's named the starter, the two guys more senior than he will transfer. That would put the team in a terrific bind.

For the record, I suspect he's the most talented QB on the roster.

Tactically I have no problem with naming Martell the starter, I am sure he would thrive and the offense would do great.

Strategically I think it would be a mistake for the QB room for the reasons you cite, and as @jwinslow has consistently pointed out for months now.

The special package stuff for Martell keeps him happy and engaged and keeps the named starter from transferring. It’s the only move that makes sense, to me.
