QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Someone hasn't been taking leg day lightly! Geez Tate

He's definitely no Tater Tot.

The problem for Tate is that, if he's named the starter, the two guys more senior than he will transfer. That would put the team in a terrific bind.

For the record, I suspect he's the most talented QB on the roster.
Exactly why I see it going down either right before the opening game or May be even mid season.

He will play though i think we have discovered that much.

Give me the winner. Give me the guy that refuses to lose. He's cat quick, strong from the waste down, and is a better thrower then people think.

Not rooting for either of the 3 to be the guy...but I do think Tate will pull it out

I am the biggest Tate Martell fan there is and I think he will be incredible here, but I would be very surprised if he won the job heading into the season. I think he could maybe take over if Haskins/Burrow isn't working for some reason though. Regardless, I do think he will get on the field in some capacity, the kid is just crazy talented and with the obvious work he has done in weight room, I don't have any concerns on getting him on the slot or in the wildcat for some situations. His time will come as a QB and he will light it up in our offense, but I just don't think it will be this year barring injuries or a QB collapse.

Tate Martell More Than Just a Runner

Tate-Martell-Ohio-State-Spring-Game-2018.jpg

In his three years as the starting quarterback at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Tate Martell threw for 7,507 yards and 113 touchdowns with just nine interceptions.

As a senior, he completed 63.3% of his pass attempts for 2,362 yards. He threw 41 touchdowns and just one interception.

Not bad for a “running quarterback.”

As a true freshman last season, Martell impressed his teammates with his athleticism on the Ohio State scout team. Then this spring he showed Buckeye fans what kind of playmaker he is, rushing for 69 yards on 11 carries while essentially playing two-hand touch.

Martell struggled throwing the ball in the spring game, however, completing just 5-of-16 passes for 28 yards and an interception.

That performance has those on the outside only seeing Martell as a running option, but that’s not how his coaches see him. While it’s true there is reliance on his legs at this point, there’s still much more that he can do.

“Well, because he has a skill set where he can move around,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson explained. “He’s a dynamic athlete. Right now as all freshmen, it’s a little overloaded. There’s some mental things he’s learning and growing. But he’s not going to be a quote option quarterback. He can throw the ball.”

URBAN MEYER HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO PLAY TATE MARTELL IN 2018

93344_h.jpg

Urban Meyer is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to his quarterback situation in 2018.

With Joe Burrow gone to LSU, Meyer has just two healthy scholarship quarterbacks on his roster in Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell, as freshman Matthew Baldwin continues to recover from an ACL injury suffered in December.

Haskins is the clear favorite to be the starter when Ohio State opens the season against Oregon State on Sept. 1, but Martell has proven his value, showing off his running abilities in a pair of spring games in his short time in Columbus.

Prior to Burrow's transfer, it was clear that regardless of who won the starting job, Martell was going to have some kind of package of plays installed for him. Meyer knows he has to play the former five-star prospect, or Martell, like Burrow, could leave for another program. Martell, the former Gatorade High School Player of the Year, could probably start for a good majority of Div. I programs right now, and if he doesn't see the field at OSU soon, he will find a way to get on the field elsewhere.

Because of Burrow's transfer however, Meyer is in that tough spot previously mentioned. With virtually no depth behind Martell, does he risk injury to Martell by playing him meaningful reps in 2018? Or should he shelf Martell, and save him in the event that Haskins would go down?

There is only one real answer here: Play him, or lose him.

Like any competitor, Martell wants to play. He came from one of the top high school programs in the country where he was a multi-year starter. Sitting the bench all of last season wasn't exactly easy for him a season ago. He expects to play in 2018, either as the starter, or in a specialist role.

SKULL SESSION: TATE ON “STACKED” OFFENSE

TATE SPEAKS IN CALI. Tate Martell attended the Steve Clarkson quarterback camp in California this weekend, where he took the opportunity to talk smack to Shea Patterson.

He also spoke on Urban Meyer promising him a chance to compete despite Dwyane Haskins being ahead of him, his growth in the spring, the Buckeyes' stacked offense, and more.

From 247sports.com:

Martell says "it's not even close" comparing him now to when he first matriculated at Ohio State. His knowledge of the playbook has expanded and he has more velocity.

^that elevenwarriors article about play him or lose him is kind of dumb. He is a redshirt freshman. Yes, I agree we should get him some snaps but does anyone really believe he is going to transfer unless he gets beat out by someone behind him? Dwayne has maximum 2 years left right? Martell isnt going to transfer before the season obviously so if he sat all year he might transfer next year? and sit out... just to be eligible the same exact time that the keys to the car would be getting handed to him anyway?
