Thank god... getting tired of this throwing stuff.

Being serious though I hope Tate can be a better thrower than JT because if he is he may have a shot to do better overall than Dwayne.

Obviously Dwayne will be a better pro but Tate just may be a less electric but better throwing version of Braxton.

The coaches say they're trying to figure out the red zone and the fact that they haven't gone to Tate yet means they haven't really tried anything.

Physically speaking:
JT was a fullback who could throw.
Braxton was an all-purpose back who could throw.
Tate is a walk on wideout who can throw.

Braxton was banged up a lot and had a giant advantage over Tate in terms of strength. Can Urban resist leaning on Tate's legs, even just to keep the defense honest?

Even if he does limit the use of Tate's feet, he's probably going to get hit 20+ times a game between rushes, scrambles, passes and option handoffs. Can his body handle 300 hits a season?

That's my concern. I'm pretty frustrated with the offense right now, but in a year we'll be complaining about Tate running 20-25 times a game. It's why I initially wanted Haskins over Burrow. Need to find a better solution than leaning on a running QB to get tough yards. I'm optimistic about some of the other QBs being recruited, but what's the point if OSU is still going to try and rely on zone reads with them when it's their time?

The time to switch the design of the run game is now. I prefer to have mobile QBs, but this program isn't going to win NCs if they're relied upon to open up running lanes for RBs and to act like a FB and get tough yardage. You're banking on finding rare QBs who are super durable, athletic, and very good passers.

I'll probably be wrong about this, but we shouldn't have to run the QB as much with Tate compared to JT. The way defenses aligned to force JT to keep on reads, a quicker quarterback would have taken it to the house pretty regularly.

Tate's 5'11", 210, which is a bit heavier than Braxton when he went to the NFL combine and just under Braxton's current weight. Tate has clearly put on some bulk and is still quick as hell, so I think he can come in for packages and running situations. I think his being a genuine run threat could significantly help the run game.

While he is noticeably bigger, I'm gonna need to see some type of independent weigh in before I buy 210lbs.

15 rushes a game (21 per tight contest: 17 OU, 26 IU, 21 UW, 17 PS, 13 NW, 24 MS, 30 UM)

I have no actual stats, but how often does JT get hit on a option give? Thrown pass? I'd feel confident putting his hits per game in the 30+ range.


So 20 actually represents a noticeable dropoff in how much contact Tate is subjected to, yet the contact is unavoidable.

1) College weights are always embellished, so I'd drop at least 10-15 off of that for Tate.

2) Braxton was also dinged up or slow to get up quite a lot. JT meanwhile was a fullback with an arm and could sustain continued abuse, in part because of his remarkable lower body build (which was like that as a freshman).


I think Tate can help, I just worry whether Urban can limit himself.

Same. And I don't think saying that means anyone is calling to replace Haskins or is reactionary to a loss...UFM said he would play a lot before the season started and we haven't seen it. I think he would bring a different dimension to the offense if he were to be implemented properly. Really hoping we use the bye week to come up with a plan for him.

I'm fairly shocked that he has not played much in that role just to keep him happy and Dwayne a little healthier.
