QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

if Tate comes in for his own package in short yardage its gonna get shut down... if they bring Tate in and run normal offense and have him throw then its got a chance but to dump in there right now and say go get these short yardage with Zone Reads .... its not gonna work because if you’re a D why wouldn’t you just play man and put everyone else in the box...

I just don’t understand this thinking.....

Tate immediately forces defenses to make a read....which is 1 more read than they currently have to make. If a DE or OLB even takes a fraction of a second longer in their initial read, you’re talking about the difference in a 2 yard gain vs a run for no yardage.

The whole point of Martell in short yardage is to prevent the current all out run blitzes Weber and Dobbins see in short yardage situations.

Our o-line hasn’t been great but we’re also losing in the numbers game. Martell would at least neutralize the latter.

It certainly couldn't hurt to try, considering what is currently being thrown out obviously isn't working.

It worked with JT Barrett even though you could argue defenses absolutely knew it was coming most of the time. It indeed still makes them at least think about making a read.

Anyone comfortable with stating that Tate is within 4 lbs of JK Dobbins? Because that's the difference in their listed weights.

I likely exaggerated a bit with the walkon WR line. He's more of a walkon RB.

Defenses did know it was coming....but we had a numbers advantage.

I don't want to get too technical, but our advantage in short yardage has switched from having a numbers advantage in the run game (what we had with JT). to actually a numbers advantage in the passing game.

Unfortunately, it takes precise execution to convert any thrown pass. You can get away with less than perfection often times in the run game as long as you have the numbers in your favor.

My frustration is I'm fairly certain the Bucks will utilize Martell in short yardage situations going forward, when the problem has been persistent for most of the year. I hate that is always takes a "come to Jesus moment" for this team to make the right adjustments. I've been calling for Martell in short yardage for 4 weeks. It's obvious.......I just don't see why it takes a loss to correct a massive deficiency. I've said it before.....but if Drew Brees can come off the field in 3rd and short, there's no reason in hell Haskins can't.

Or you could use two RBs, you know like putting Weber and JK together in the backfield. So many other ways to run the ball then switching out QBs
I've thought about this often. There was a goal line situation in either game one or two where we had JK next to Haskins and Weber lined up like a TE and we gave it to Weber for the score. Lots of ways you could utilize these guys.
