QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Poseur....100%.

He tried to act the act but when things got even a little tough he almost immediately quit. I'm going to fathom a guess that last year he was mopey in practices too which is why Day probably let it be known that it wasn't immediately going to be his job this year at Ohio State, which meant it was transfer portal time.

Martell was highly rated and showed excellent skills coming out of high school. He was less impressive at Ohio State. I get the 10 for 10 against Rutgers, but let's not forget that Dwayne Haskins went 18 for 18 for his last passes in that same game against a team that would end the season 1-11. I remember the stunning shitshow when the Tate package was put in place against TSUN.

Martell seems to be the victim of his own success at lower levels. Watching him on the sidelines, I wondered if he understood the difference between believing in himself and arrogance. He surely was arrogant and publicly dismissive of Fields and set out to show Ohio State coaches that they made a mistake. He has failed to do so, yet. Life hands you sandwiches with day-old bread and fillings you really did not want.

We define ourselves by how we handle adversity. This guy has the possibility of melting down in a way that would make Mo Clarett look stable after leaving Ohio State.

He would be very wise to take a step back and call himself to account. He needs to get back into practice and finish this out. If he doesn't, his emotional weakness will guarantee that he will never play in the pros.

Martell has/had the opportunity to be a really good system quarterback.

I keep harping on this, but look at what Kendall Briles did with a converted WR to QB last year. D'Eriq King was a WR until Briles got to Houston, and decided he could mold him into the best fit for his system, which relied heavily on QB run, RB power runs between tackles, and simple reads for QB.

King promptly threw 219/345 (63.5% completion percentage) which isn't great, but you can live with it when it stresses the defense so much in the run game. He threw for 36 TD's to 6 INT's.

They played fast, and made the game easy for the QB. That is exactly the type of system Tate should've been looking for. And he blew it by going to Miami where they have an OC that is known for developing pocket QB's, and working with heavy route trees and QB progressions.

Just an awful fit.

And lastly, whether he went to FSU to be with Briles or not.....there's probably 20-30 other OC's in college operating similar systems. All would've been much better fits than Miami. How he didn't recognize this is my frustration. I'm not a huge Tate fan at this point, but certainly don't have any hurt feelings....I'd prefer he be successful than not. I just can't get over his decision-making process. Brutal. He didn't shoot himself in one foot......he shot both.

Just shocked he went to Miami anyways....

I mean if I was him I'd have picked a low level D1 school. FAU, South Florida, UNLV, Houston, Rutgers, Vandy, or Texas Tech... schools like that.

He should've known Williams had really good talent and now here he is.

He should've finished his degree then be free and clear wherever he wants.

He was never going to win the starting QB job here. If he has a future in football, it won't be as a QB.

No but he would have a degree, grad xfer exemption, and be able to go somewhere *guaranteed* to be the guy.

Good luck getting a 2nd ncaa exemption.
And good luck with credit transfer games.
