QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

As I wrote above, I hope Martell finds a place he can be successful. I was very happy that he had a good game and went 10 for 10 against Rutgers, but I also remember the Tate Martell package that went nowhere. Quite frankly, I see no reason to support him. TheTateMartell? This is a common name? He's not lost a bit of his ego despite glaring failures in college. Perhaps I am wrong, but is he doing squats in the video with 200lbs plus the bar. Steve19 was doing 100-120kg squats (220-244lbs) at 60 years of age. Every coach that looks at Martell is going to see that ego as a cancer in the locker room and on the field, if he has any competition for the position. If he doesn't get that under control, he is going to have problems his entire life.

So, I don't see any reason to support him or to beat up on him. The reality is that his self-image is greatly out of step with reality, which is that he really performed below expectations at Ohio State and was asked to leave the Buckeyes and then couldn't make it on to the field at Miami. If he finds the right place in a lower level conference, he could have modest success and I hope he does, but I won't be losing any sleep if he doesn't. So, best wishes and good luck to him.

But while UNLV’s No. 1 spot is up for grabs, Arroyo said the solution won’t be coming from outside the program.
“We don’t have a choice,” Arroyo said. “We have no free agents. We’re out of scholarships.”
So, barring a corresponding move that opens up a roster spot, fans can stop speculating about Tate Martell or some other disgruntled QB coming in to save the day at the last minute. With UNLV at its scholarship limit, it will either be Brumfield, Rogers or Friel taking the snaps when the 2021 season kicks off.

Scholarship or walk-on at UNLV?

I get it... but to me Buckeye nation is bit hard on him.

Yeah he was cocky but he did run into a bad situation with Justin Fields and then obviously was just too far behind at Miami to make an impact.

I hope he goes somewhere small to just get on the field.
I think the reality is Tate was highly overrated as a prospect. Sometimes the recruiting analysts don't get it right. He certainly belongs at a Group of 5 program like UNLV. But Justin Fields had nothing to do with Tate not reaching the lofty goals people had for him. If not Fields, I'm sure OSU would've found someone else to start over him.

He's not Justin Fields but IMO he could've been JT Barret for our offense. He's a talented kid but obviously he needs the right system to do well. I wonder how another year of Ryan Day would've helped him too as I thought Tate did fairly well throwing the ball when given the shot.

Was he a 5 star? No. Could he be an effective QB? Yes.

I think most people's issues with him come from him running his mouth then having no balls to stay to back up his talk. If you want to talk the talk you better walk the walk.. If he was beat out so be it. But to talk how aren't leaving it's your spot then as soon as he announces his transfer run away. That's weaksauce. No one has an issue with Burrough etc..

Oh for sure that's the primary issue most in buckeye nation have with him... which yeah he earned that heat considering the trash he was talking. I personally think in 2019 Tate could have gone undefeated in the regular season just like JF. Now against Clemson he probably isn't at all ready for that game though.

I really think Tate could've given us JT esque type production. That 60-63% passer that gets it done vs big ten schools but struggles vs elite defenses.

I hope he can win the job at UNLV though because that's where he should've went after OSU to begin with.

Hindsight is always 20/20
but probably where he should have gone from the get go
I think that's hindsight. Out of HS, Tate was a very good prospect, he was better than G5. Maybe not OSU elite level, but he could've started at pretty much every other B1G school and every school in the ACC that's not Clemson or Miami, and im sure most of the Big 12. His record at Bishop Gorman was against some good national teams

JT is a good comparison. And JT wasn't considered elite either. A very good QB who could win a bunch of games though. But both fit the Meyer/running QB system
