QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

It is true that she was brought to the attention of the board by being related to a former Ohio State QB.

It is also true that she would receive a less than favorable reception from the board if she was brought to its collective attention by some other means.

I think #1 outweighs #2 in this instance and it should slide without comment.

I feel like though it seems like it is opening the flood gates, there always has to be a “reason.” How easy it is to come up with those “reasons” is yet to be entirely seen. The MAC teams have a lot more local players so it would be harder I imagine to play the “closer to home” card that we see a lot. So something else has to give. Do we conjure up situations that “occurred” to get that waiver granted? Less coaching changes among the smaller schools. Players commit less to a particular coach at a school like Bowling Green it seems. That coach is less likely to be poached.

If this does essentially turn into immediate eligibility for transfers, it seems that the smaller schools would be crushed. Have a good season in the MAC as a football or basketball player? Next year you're up to the Big Ten.

I’m curious if there’s been a case where a player has “traded up” for a higher perennially ranked program. Most of the transfer waivers have been from, say, Ohio State to North Carolina or Miami or Akron, and not vice versus. Genuinely curious.

It's probably because a star player at a smaller school isn't willing to sit out a year. You see more players trading up in basketball with the grad transfer exception.
