QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Count me in the camp that thinks transferring should be easier. My perfect system would allow all players one free, no questions asked, transfer. But in order to transfer any additional time, a waiver is required. And a waiver that is not easy to get (see: 2017 and earlier).
I agree with this 100%. If the college football landscape was still mostly players staying 4+ years, the one year rule makes sense. Now that the odds of a player staying only 3 years is significantly higher, it makes sense to evolve the transfer rule.

My guess he put his name in the portal so that the coaching staff knows that he isn't going to be the backup if he doesn't win the job. I just think he wants a level playing field to win the starting job.

I have to think Urban talked about QB depth and how you need guys ready like in 2014. You have to expect Day to carry on that. By entering the portal Tate is saying don't count on me to be that depth. Maybe he saw something with Haskins and Burrow with the staff favoring Haskins prematurely.

Does the transfer portal tell who has contacted players?

That's kind of a shitty thing to do. Just sayin'

MD was an option, but it sounds like Enos really wants to Hurts to follow him to Miami. It'd be mutually beneficial for both. I'm not sure Hurts is even that much better, if at all, than Kasim Hill who was a 4* prospect, and the #10 pro-style QB in his class (he will be a junior next year). Which sounds a bit ridiculous, but Hurts is that poor of a thrower. I think most Bama insiders are off the Hurts to MD wagon, and believe Enos takes him to Coral Gables to help establish his system, and incorporate a power run spread system.

The real question, is Jalen Hurts or Tate Martell ready for Da U? They may want to prepare for the following:

-- Surrounded w/ more criminals on your team than one night in the county jail.

-- Get used to people who think that turnover chain is cool

-- Drastically different fans. Going from Roll Tide/Go Buckeyes no matter what, to getting trash thrown on you if you lose a game.

-- Vanilla Ice, need I say more?

I saw reports that Day hasn't talked to Tate about Fields coming in. Its definitely an odd situation since Fields is such a highly touted prospect and him transferring in puts him squarely against Tate. Both Tate and Fields have 3 years of eligibility left but Fields can't enter the NFL for 2 more years. Fields winning the starting job basic closes the door for Tate to ever start at Ohio State.

I'm not sure how much of Fields coming in was Day searching for a better option than Tate vs having a better prospect falling into Days lap. It didn't seem like any other transfer QB prospect was linked to Ohio State.

Its no guarantee that Fields is going to come in and light it up. Other stuff can happen too, just look at 2014. Even if Day thinks Fields is the better player, he shouldn't alienate Tate in the process, that could come back to bite him. We saw how well Urban was able to handle QB competitions, this just doesn't seem like it was handled as well.

Well.....there's limits in the sense, you are only truly a FA if you've completed your undergraduate degree. Which I think is awesome. It's incentivizing the kids to complete their degrees in 3 years so they can transfer without penalty to a situation that helps them athletically. It's a win-win.

All indications are Tate will graduate by April. I think that's awesome.

Kendall Austin is also a graduate transfer should he choose to leave.

Jalen Hurts graduated on time, but his degree allows him to pick a spot good for him.

The new trasfer rule is awesome, IMO. It truly benefits the student athlete to get their shit done academically, sooner the better.......it's a great rule.

100% agree. Craig Krenzel (although he has failed to do much with it) was a good example of excellence in academics while still leading us to a NC. I get it. But, this is a very good point.

Right. However, if this is the case (and at this point we're just speculating-- where did you hear Day was alienating Tate Martell?), the situation could've been handled MUCH better. For instance, if Day didn't end up speaking to Tate about it, man up and go talk to your coach. Communication does go both ways. And, not in the form of "I'm transferring if you don't start me. See: the transfer portal I just entered".

EDIT: Also, IMO Urban didn't handle QB competitions well at all.

I saw it in a tweet from some radio station. They were quoting Laurinaitis from a radio interview they did with him. After reading it a second time I took it out of context too much.

This is the tweet "James Laurinaitis on 97.1 said he was told it's not true that Ryan Day had any type of conversations with Tate Martell regarding Justin Fields being given the starting QB job. Fields just stepped on campus last Friday. Tate deciding to leave is his own decision."

I do wish Day would have step in and calm Tate down. His interviews and tweeting even before Fields officially transfer were alittle out of hand.

I do agree that you would also hope Tate would go in and talk to Day but even older pro athletes rather just sub tweet and go to social media these day to get their point across instead of keeping it in house. In my mind putting his name into the transfer portal was his way of sub tweeting the whole Fields situation.

I understand and appreciate the entertainment value associated with speculating as to the motivations and strategy of a 20-year old male athlete, and I'm not criticizing those who enjoy engaging in it.

That said, I'll pass on doing so myself.

If I'm day in that situation I go out and find another depth guy for a year.

I can definitely see this being Tate's thinking though.

I think Day should be looking for a QB as part of this recruiting class even if it's a guy like Kenny Guiton was. Bring in too many transfers is just setting the QB room to collapse at some point. Guys will just graduate and not have eligiblity left when you need them. Better to build up a QB to eventually be the backup and be happy about than going to have to recruit one every year.

Absolutely agree that this is a win-win and it definitely incentivizes the right things. It disincentivizes snake-oil salesmen recruiters by slowing down / counterbalancing the recruiting thing a bit because if a coach sells a kid a load of crap to get him to commit, the kid knows that as long as he can finish his degree, he can always transfer.

It is about time these kids find some power while everybody else (and I mean EVERYBODY else) is making millions. It should be illegal. It's a wonder somebody hasn't brought a class action lawsuit. Better call Saul... :wink2:

Northwestern did.

If you take a step back, how is Tate's handling of this situation much different than D. Nestor or any of the previously committed HS kids .... "I came here to play for Urban and want to see what the new staff has to say about their philosophy and my role. In the meantime, I am going to re-open my recruiting and see if my skill set, and my comfort level, fits in better at another school."
(This, obviously, disregards the shenanigans with Twitter bio edits and wallpaper changes)

The coaching staff did making an effort to work Tate in during meaningful series against some of our easier opponents this year. I can't remember the last time an Ohio State staff did that for the backup QB. By most accounts it seem like they were grooming him to take over for Haskins once he left.

I think that's why he was so cocky and surprise by the staff bring in Fields. The staff's actions basically said the starting job next year is yours to Tate if Haskins leaves.
