QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Kind of an odd situation to walk into when they’ve got a new HC. I don’t think WVU is even in the same stratosphere as some other options that could put him on a better stage.

I think Tate is playing this all wrong. Even from the quotes from Tate the days before Fields came in, he was saying how he wants to get this team back to the playoffs and win another national championship. If that is part of his plan at his new school, WVU and Louisville won't cut it. They just don't recruit well enough to put the pieces around him and the defense to compete at that level. Miami might work if Hurts decides not to go there but my guess is Hurts is their first option. Also Miami is in the same conference as Clemson.

I think you are in the right mind set that he needs to go to the pac12. It's the easiest path and if he can get to a school that recruits well, he could be the piece that takes a program to the next level. UCLA isn't that if you look at the article I posted earlier and I read another article after that, which says UCLA has had 29 players left the program since Chip Kelly took over.

Really Tate should just go back to Columbus and keep quiet. Put his energy into trying to win the Ohio State starting job. Wait for Oklahoma to figure out their situation and see what other programs need a QB after spring ball ends. His chances are the highest right now to win a national championship at Ohio State as the starter than anywhere else. I would set his chances of winning the starting QB job at 30-40% with all the hoops Field still has to jump thru.

I'm just disappointed this thread hasn't been updated to reflect "Tathan" anywhere.

Disappointed it’s not locked. There hasn’t been anything posted of any relevance in days. Just speculation and misinformed judgements since nobody knows what exactly Tate is thinking and he’s well within his rights to at least explore transfer options, all things considered.

Edit: I take that back. There have been posts of schools he is possibly looking at/visiting. So apply the first part of this post to everything else.

Sorry, I can't agree with this sentiment that someone who experiences wins their whole life should get extra sympathy when they finally take an L.

But I don't blame him for transferring either. If I'm stuck in a dead end job I'm going to find another one. That's fine.

The way he handled the whole thing though makes him look bad and frankly I think it shows a lack of character, especially with opening the door to transfer now. Even if you don't believe in the whole "no I in team" you didn't have to make all that public. Whether you honestly felt it or not he could have said "more depth at QB will only make us stronger, welcome aboard, but I'm ready to prove myself on the field"

It wasn't just one comment either you could chalk up to a mistake. There are plenty of young players carrying themselves maturley in public/social media, so I don't think it's an unreasonable virtue. Not saying it's worth castrating the guy over, but boy it's really makes you look like a scared Chihuahua that was just barking up a storm with no intention of fighting. Had he said something stupid online about an opponent or something I wouldn't give it much thought, but going after Fields at that point was like going after his own team.

I'd love for a QB competition instead of a straight away transfer, but the way Tate carried himself before this news it really had me questioning if he was the right type of character to lead this team. I'm wondering if perhaps Day didn't think something similar and maybe this is what expedited the transfer process this early?

Well, it'd be great if you read my post well before you incorrectly cite what I said. I neither said nor implied sympathy. If you read my posts in this thread, then you'd know I have none for the current situation. Furthermore, I actually don't think he has shown anything that would indicate he's all that.

My point is that he's a kid and he's going through a massive reality check. Sympathy no. Understanding yes. He has totally screwed up his life. He might recover. He might not. I might add that neither I, you, or anyone else here has an opinion about his decision or behavior that matters. We agree on the character issues. And that is what he has to deal with right now.

Once his full first name got out, it was only a matter of time.

Did I miss something? He actually went ahead and transferred? (yes, this is sarcasm)...

I just figured it was a done deal because nobody I've ever met from Vegas would ever go to West Virginia for fun. Especially in January. Maybe I'd have been more precise with my words if he visited Miami first because then I could just convince myself he wanted to get away from the snow lol.

Think Austin Kendall lands at Duke under David Cutcliffe, since Daniel Jones left for NFL. Kendall is a North Carolina kid and grew up a Duke athletics fan.

That leaves the OU job open. I think Martell to OU would make a lot of sense, but I don't think Riley wants to start his relationship with Spencer Rattler on a sour note. It's much easier to sell a QB coming in with 1 year of eligibility than a guy coming in with 3 years like Tate.

Sounds like Hurts to OU is a real possibility.

That opens up Tate's first choice, which I believe to be Miami. Smartly, I think is Tate waiting to see where Hurts ends up and will adjust accordingly. For Miami, I think Tate makes much more sense than Hurts. They'd get 3 years of eligibility vs. 1 with Hurts, and it gives them a legit QB for the near and long-term, since Tate likely plays through his senior season.

Just where I believe things stand today.....again, it's musical chairs.
