QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

So far Troy (#1) isn't doing real well....

Late in the 4th quarter it is Calgary 29 - Montreal 1

and I have no idea how you score 1 point in football.

OK I "googled" it: Single (one point) is credited to the player who kicked the ball across the Goal Line.

Watched about half the game (2nd & 3rd Qs) between soccer. Tried too often to break the pocket laterally instead of stepping up, overthrew receivers, sometimes by a wide margin, and seemed to want to force the ball deep when the game was still manageable at 0-14 instead of taking intermediate throws and keeping possession. With only two downs in the CFL instead of three, if you're going to throw a bomb, you'd better hit it.

agreed, not a great start:
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Zurkowsky Alouettes look like team disarray/9986511/story.html

Smith won a Heisman Trophy while playing for Ohio State. He has played, a little, in the National Football League. He is, by all accounts, an excellent leader. And he has a strong arm. And all of that matters not one lick now that he has arrived in the Canadian Football League.
A strong arm means nothing if a quarterback is overthrowing receivers, throwing low or behind them. The timing issues between Smith and his receivers have yet to improve. Whether the passes were short or long, few were successful. He couldn’t even complete 50 per cent of his throws, connecting on only 17 of 40 attempts for 127 yards. He was intercepted once, a potential second nullified by a Calgary unnecessary roughness penalty.
The Als generated 148 yards net offence. Smith’s longest completion was a 15-yarder to S.J. Green. Green, the Als’ leading receiver in 2013, didn’t have a pass directed his way until late in the second quarter. Coincidentally, a visibly upset Green refused a post-game interview request.
Duron Carter, last season’s rookie phenom, didn’t catch a pass until the second quarter.

Hi guys, I was at the game and the Troy to 85 TD was a beaut, right in front of our goal-line seats... very sad it was a late Als loss, but a tight game all evening.
If TS and his main receivers keep connecting like Friday, expect Troy to really emerge this season...

although not every fan posting is convinced:
As for Mtl, Smith is NOT the future of this franchise. He can't see the field, suffers from a bad case of happy feet and feels like he needs to throw the deep 'hero' pass every time, which is not what this league is about.

btw,
Chad 85 quite the entertainer, already meeting the Mtl mayor about his fistful of parking tickets, saying: I'm about love, what is this all about?

ouch; a blowout loss, and Troy in the spotlight:
http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=457537#YourCallTop

typical reader comment:

It's just sad to watch those MTL receivers come off the field in absolute disgust. Chad Johnson looks to be deep in thought on the sidelines wondering what is going on. Others sit on the bench wondering when they can get a QB that can actually throw within their arm span. I sense some QB coming in to help by week 6 if this continues.

Trouble in Paradise, part XXVII:
with a brutal 1-4 record, and outscored about 60-10 in last 2 games, worst blowouts since 1986,
there is some, uh, pressure on Alouettes offensive squad,

coaching staff now bolstered by yet another ex CFL/NFL star,
aka the Troy Coach:
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Zurkowsky Garcia joins consultant coach/10089448/story.html

For those keeping score at home, the Als now have a coach for every quarterback that actually plays. The cover of this season’s team media guide has the phrase Strength in Numbers — but if Montreal hires any more coaches, the team might require a second plane to transport everyone to road games.

Jeff Garcia undoubtedly comes with impressive credentials. He played four full seasons for Calgary, passing for more than 16,000 yards and 111 touchdowns. A four-time West Division all star, he was the Grey Cup most valuable player in 1998, leading the Stampeders to a 26-24 victory against Hamilton.

Garcia then launched an NFL career the following season, with San Francisco. He spent five seasons with the 49ers before stops in Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia twice and Tampa Bay. He passed for more than 25,500 yards and 161 touchdowns.

The guy knows from where he speaks. He has been operating quarterback camps and mentoring many, including Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell, who play the position. And Garcia has taken a hands-on approach.

Troy back and maybe getting a 2nd look,
but current stand-in QB Crompton has gone 3-1, so a hard row to hoe:
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Zurkowsky Smith number coming soon/10229308/story.html

Jeff Garcia, the Als’ new quarterback coach, said Smith alone controls his destiny. Garcia saw Smith’s final game, against the Eskimos, although he was merely an offensive consultant at that time.
“The main thing for Troy is to show that he really wants to be the leader of this team, the starting quarterback,” Garcia said. “Show that he’s dedicated to the position, the organization and do the little things.”
While Garcia’s reluctant to pass judgment, given his brief time with the organization, he said it was obvious Smith struggled with his consistency and understanding of Canadian football.
“With two downs, you have to be highly efficient,” Garcia said. “If it’s not there with the throw, you have to be able or willing to utilize your legs. When you’re not taking advantage of those opportunities or completing 60-plus per cent of your passes, you’re going to struggle as a team and offence.
“If you’re doing that, you’re going to be replaced. They were at that point, based on injury and the situation of this team, where they had to see what else they had.”

Montreal has released Troy.

MONTREAL - The Montreal Alouettes released quarterback Troy Smith on Thursday.

The former Heisman Trophy winner started the Als' first six games before being placed on the six-game injured list.

Smith completed 83 of 174 passes for 989 yards and four touchdowns this season. The six-foot 195-pound Columbus native also threw four interceptions.

as an Als season ticket holder, I did expect Troy to be the successor to Calvillo, at least for a season or two;
sad it ended this way, but the team's 1st half 2014 was disastrous, no question
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...roy-smith/article21126112/#dashboard/follows/

Smith struggled to a 1-5 start, completing just 47 per cent of his passes as the Alouettes averaged a league-low 16.3 points per game. He last saw action in a 33-23 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos on August 8th before being placed on the team’s six-game injured list with knee, ankle and thumb injuries..
Jonathan Crompton has since emerged as the starting quarterback, winning five of his last seven starts.

On this day in sports history in 2006....

Troy Smith threw for 316 yards and four touchdowns as top-ranked Ohio State held off No. 2 Michigan, 42-39, to win the Big Ten title and earn a spot in the Bowl Championship Series national title game.

Might have been the best game that I have ever been to in Ohio Stadium; and I've been to almost all the home games since 1966 (my freshman year). However, beating #1 ranked Purdue (13-0) in 1968 is up there too.
