Quality of posting on BP

Clarity

Some of you have noticed that the political forum has derailed a bit, and the nonsense and petty bickering from in there has managed to pollute other areas of the site to some degree.

I just wanted to take a second to assure all of you that we're aware of it, and that a solid group of people have tasked themselves with the responsibility of getting it all back under control. We will do what we have to do to maintain a certain quality of life here at BP.

I had a stray thought earlier today. The Olympics were on, and some nutcase was talking about how the difficulty of a certain routine determines the max score a gymnast can get. So Olympian 1 may have a medium-difficulty routine and can only get 9.4 max. Olympian 2 may have a higher difficulty routine and can get a 10.0 max. But both have an equal potential to screw up and get a 6.0. I consider BP a site that can achieve a 10.0 based on potential and degree of difficulty (when you allow that we challenge ourselves by allowing relatively unrestricted discourse on basically any subject), and (not with anyone in particular in mind, honest) I see other sites that can do at best 8.0 or the like. Despite that, we're equally capable of slogging along at a 4.0, and if problems and specific people here were left unchecked, that might be the direction we're heading in. I'm not going to let that happen, neither is anyone else, so we're going to pull things back up to the higher end of the scoring scale, and we're going to get back to being representative of what a great OSU online community should look like.

I want to openly call for more active community participation in this effort. There's always room for good debate, but let's try and collectively be above petty bullshit. Let's police ourselves. Right now, every hour I dedicate to dealing with stuff like this, is an hour taken directly from the final phases of the stats engine development effort. We're so close there, and I have to say that this thing exceeds even my expectations. I want it up on the site so badly I can taste it.

We are *18* days away from the first game of the season. Everyone take a deep breath, and rejoice in the fact that another great season of Buckeye football is upon us. Let's *all* make BP the best community online, regardless of scope.

I gotta second this as well - but in my typical wordy fashion.

One of the things I like about these boards is watching people evolve. Younger folks in particular (or at least I am assuming these are younger folks) tend to state their positions very strongly - especially when they first start posting. But when they get a little peer pressure thrown back at them and start to understand that they have violated some sort of 'norm' they begin to look for new ways to express themselves. Many of my favorite posters are folks who went through that 'evolution'. It is cool to watch.

What can happened to a board (I wont mention any names) is that if it grows too fast, or the folks who understand the norms don't reinforce them (or get banned), the yahoos start reinforcing one another and establish new norms. Once that happens you wont get your board back.

That said, much of the referenced name calling isn't coming from inexperienced posters - and that is a shame. But we ALL own it.

Nicely said Oh8ch, Watching alot of the newbies come aboard and you read with interest what they have to post here in BP. From there we can draw a
consensus. I have seen such a difference in a positive way for BP. I think the monitors can scan thru and weed out the bad apples before they spoil the rest. BP is a good solid unit so far. Lets hope it can remain that way.

As always, well stated Clarity. I will make a better effort on my end of it all to enhance thorough discussion. OH8CH stated it very well when he said that many new posters come on the board acting hard then they digress some and really become a quality addition. I think that is some of the case here, the sun is rising on football season. Everyone is cramming on here to talk Buckeye ball.

well said on the newbie thing.....some come on strong at the beginning like bkb....and lo and behold...a few pm's and some time later....you like the guy....even though views still differ from time to time...

other newbies come in and can never adapt....and go away...that is what makes this place so great....the self-policing....

is it perfect...no...

but lets remember....historically the month of august is when posters machismo is running and the most altercations happen (also dec15-jan1)....
