Questions/comments about reputation points

Obviously, I'm new here but that doesn't stop me from expressing my opinions, so I have one on the reputation component. Actually, I have a question first.

I participated in one thread and managed to get several of them - some positive, some negative - but there's one thing that bothers me. Unless the person tells you who they are, or refers to something specific, I can't tell who sent them. Am I missing something, or is that how it works?

If one can do it anonymously, it sure seems wide open for abuse. Then again, I don't know if it serves an actual administrative purpose, so there may be no harm in it. By the way, most people either ID'd themselves, or made it apparent of who they are by what they said - I respect that, be it positive or negative, and I'll try to make sure I do the same. But when someone gives you a negative hit, in particular, with no mention as to why, that's pretty weak. Another person gave me a negative one with nothing more than he/she disagreed with me - is that really the purpose of the system? If I disagree with someone's point of view, I knock 'em down for it? That also seems lame to me.

I was pleased to see more positive one's than negative one's, but I would like to know more about how it works, and why it exists.

(Okay, I admit it...I'm a little bored waiting for the bowl game).

More than not, that would be the chickenshit Tibs. He likes to get ya whining about it then make fun of you for whining. He is not the only one, but it seems that he is a prevalent one. In all honesty I love the feature, but you have to take it all with a grain of salt, it won't hurt or help you.
