Quick postion observation week #3

slobberknocker

All-American
This is my first try at this so go easy on the flaming or let it fly

:osu: lets start with what seems to be everyone 1st concern off

offensive line: They seem to be gelling a little bit, we may have been to rough on them last week ( look at marshall vs bulldogs ). They are constantly being run blitzed or put in situations where the defense knows whats coming i.e. run on first, run on second, pass on third. We had a few false start penaltys but overall I'd give them a c or c-.

WR & TE : Santonio get used to it, all of them looked good, I think a few aren't running exact routes but it will come. No drops no penaltys great stuff for the number of attempts. I'd give them B+

Running back: Well......enough said, we need joe back and pittman wow what a burst he hit the hole hard and had some yac's, future looks good for the bucks. I'd give them Ross C Fullback C

QB: Jz won period. rushed a few passes got hammered on the blitz a few times, kept coming back and ran a mistake free effiecent off. I'd give him a solid B

Defense

DLIne: Looked good at time and young at times, we did get some pressure on davis and created some turnovers. They still had problems getting of blocks and making plays in the running game and didn't keep ol off of our lb's . They looked like they gained some of that experience they needed the 1st two weeks. I'd give them a solid B to B+

Linebackers: Our olb's are flat out studs. Enough said everyone knows. I'd give them B+ to A
now our mlb seem to be having some problems yes they made a few plays but, when they scrape down the line of scrimmage they get their so fast they committ themselves to a lane, and by the time the back gets their its clogged and he cuts back to open lanes. I know thats tough to pick on but man a couple big plays came from that but wouldn't trade them for nothin. I'd give them a solid B to B+

DB: They should buy the front seven dinner for sure Whitner, Salley and boys are looking better and better Youboty nice job of stepping up and playing a solid no mistake game, whitner and salley laying the wood man I love that. They made the sure tackles in open field and flat out made some plays. I think one or two missed coverages ( thank god recievers dropped balls) but overall probably a solid B+

Special Teams: very nice not alot of return yards but no turnovers and we won the field postion game. Punter B

NUGGGGGGGGGGGGGG BEST ALL AROUND KICKER IN THE COUNTRY PERIOD

Coaching : took a young team into hostile country and won I don't care about 140 yds total off etc has game plan for this year and the future Jt is the man Grade solid A

You don't give a solid A to the staff when the offense gets 140 yards total, win or not. The offense had some serious hickups yesterday, but will get better. Yet, it is something that needs to be corrected. The only reason we won was because of five takeaways.

How bad would you have to be to get a D. To me C is average and yesterday Ross was many things and none of them were average.

...but a real nice writeup...

OL- B They did a fairly decent job pass blocking and we saw what happened when Pittman was in.

WR- B Others were involved today instead of Holmes which will be huge in the future.

QB-B Zwick didn't win us the game but well he didn't lose us the game very solid effort on his part.

RB-F Ross jus was horrible he didn't run the ball, couldn't hold onto it, and well didn't really block too well either.

FB-D Besides Brandon Joe, Snitt got tore up in pass protection and created little push. I'd give Brandon Joe a "A" for getting a good surge on the TD by Ross.

DL- B Did a fairly good job on run stopping, but I thought they did a VERY NICE job on rushing the passer. If they get the misdirection stuff down we'll be in VERY good shape.

LB-A+ AJ Hawk is the best Linebacker there is right now PERIOD. Carpenter is prolly our fastest Linebacker and is just impressing me so much. However I'm very happy with the play of D'Andrea I know you will say oh well the MLB's have been missing tackles well it doesn't help when the interior D-Line isn't recognizing the misdirection. Schlegal is also do'n decent he jus needs a shot thats all.

DB-A I'm very impressed with the corners. I'm not overly Impressed with our Safties in Coverage but I'm happy with them in run support. So far they've let up 2 TD's over the middle of the field for LONG Td's.

Special Teams-A+ Well punting was suppose to be a problem? and we fly down there on punts and kicks and Mo Hall is still getting good gains on Kick Returns! However you know the real reason I gave them an "A".

Quick .02 on the LB's and some other stuff:

-Hawk and Carpenter are 1 and 2 on the team in tackels. MDA is tops on the team in TFL's. Can't ask for much more than that.

Quick perspective check of where we are at(OSU/OPP):

2002
ppg: 29.3/13.1
ypg: 365/321

2003
ppg: 24.8/17.6
ypg: 332/297

2004 YTD:
ppg: 24.3/13.7
ypg: 334/261

Its still early so take it fwiw but it looks like a promising indicator to me.

My biggest concern is still TO's and the RB position, not the running game as a whole.

My list of main concerns was much longer at the start of the season, so having it down to 1 or 2 already is pretty good :wink2:

mili: as stated above in my post this staff took a young team into hostile stadium and came away with a win. JT plays close to the vest so his offense doesn't 1) lose the game 2) turn the ball over 3) lose field postion game. That said yes I'd like to see us open it up and put our foot on their neck early but thats not how it is so I'll go with his schemes and plan for this year and the future.. So for me young team, in hostile enviorment, against quality opposition its an A

yes the 5 takeways were big but the coaches put players in postions to make plays.

buki read the post stated as much about the dl

I think the coaches know they have to improve the way they coach because you know there's always room for improvement in everything we do. I hope we come out and get everything worked out before WISCONSIN. I don't know bout you guys but with me being younger than most of you guys I grew up hating Wisconsin more than Michigan because Wisconsin always seemed to play us tougher than anyone it seemed. Plus the last 3 years they've beat us 2 times I just can't stand them.
