Tanned Fat Looks Better
I decided on Sunday evening while laying in bed that I was going to quit. This was after 9 years of smoking a pack a day and even more on the weekends. I woke up Monday feeling like a new man and had only 4 cigarettes all day long and I must say that it wasn't all that bad. Yesterday I did even better by only having 3. Unfortunately today is a different story, as I've already had 4.

I decided to try and quit smoking because a) it's getting too expensive b) you can't smoke anywhere anymore and most importantly c) I want to get into better shape and just don't feel healthy anymore.

Has anyone here tried and succeeded in quitting and if so do you have any pointers on how to go about it?

SIMV,

I'm not a smoker but I applaud your effort to quit. Just figure out how much money you spend a year on cigarettes and that should be enough to quit.

I've always heard that rubbing cigarettes in feces and then attempting to smoke is a sure-fire bet to quit. :pimp:

Seriously though man, good luck.

Thanks Thump. I hope I can do it this time. I tried about a year ago and gave up after 53 or so hours of being smoke free. I could've kicked myself in the ass for that one, but I think gradually taking it out of my life is a lot easier than quitting cold turkey.

I had a coworker quit pretty recently.

Whenever he was going to go buy cigarettes, his wife would say, "Oh, wait until tomorrow and then buy them." Eventually, he got used to waiting longer, and finally just quit altogether. He's successfully been off them for months now.

The most interesting part to me is how he notices smoke in restaurants now, and he says he never realized how much it affects people until he quit.

Good luck!

not a smoker.. never was...
but friends that succeeded stopped cold turkey

and what jumps out are those that had success using hypnosis...

best of luck...

also, very often smoking is situational... make sure you have gum or something in those situations... and stay busy so you can't think about it...

I'm pulling for you, scarlet. I don't know what it's like to kick the habit, but it must be really fucking hard. You might want to take up knitting or something. :) Just stick to your goal, and think how much healthier you will be when you're smoke-free (and you'll smell better, too!).

Mark Twain once said, "To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times." I love that quote!

I quit cold turkey over three years ago. The best thing I did was actually quit during a long weekend and I spent almost the entire time in bed sleeping. No TV. No PS2. No computer. No kids. And certainly no wife. Four days. Me and my pillow and an electric blanket. I got up five times to eat half a sandwich and drink a glass of water and went to the bathroom as needed.

You have to avoid the things that cause stress and the things we associate with smoking. YOU CAN'T DRINK!!!! Worst thing you can do for about the first month or so is drink alcohol.

Best of luck dude. If you need help, PM me or email me. [email protected]

I can't get my wife or my mother to quit, but if I can help you, I've done some good.

I tried to quit cold turkey at the first of this year but it didn't work out so well.

I then tried to ween myself off of them by only smoking a few a day. That has seemed to work the best for me. I'm down to only smoking 2 a day and I even went a night at the bar last weekend without puffing on one. And you know how hard it is for a smoker not to smoke when they drink, damn near impossible.

I feel so much better having done so.

I will volunteer to kick you in junk every time you light up. If that doesn't break your habit nothing will...

In all seriousness, best of luck to you on quitting. Not from personal experience, but from people I have seen try to quit, it is not easy and will likely be with you the rest of your life. However, it will definitely be worth it for you health.

I fell off the smoking wagon though last Thursday Scarlet.

Bought a pack before I went to the Pub, had only 4 when I left.

I always try to tell myself that smoking Ultra Lights isn't all that bad.

I'm doing a lot better than I thought I would.

Yeah, if you're a girl

Seriously though, I read somewhere that you do more harm by smoking lights and ultra lights because you take harder longer hits off the cigarette and end up getting more nicotine in your system than you would if you were smoking a full flavor. I don't know how much I believe that but hey, ya never know.
