I dipped Skoal for about 8 yrs...quit a few weeks ago and it was rough. Having the surgery this week has made it easier.

What is the correlation between nicotine and metabolism...one of the guys I coach with said to be careful about my eating habits after quitting because of the sudden drop in metabolism.

What's the scoop?

I'm no doctor, I just play one on the internet but I don't see how stopping nicotine intake can lower your metabolism. I don't know how nicotine can speed up your body burning calories.

I do know that a lot of people gain weight after they quit b/c they have an oral fixation problem and eat to fulfill that fixation.

I know a way you can fulfill your oral fixation, by sucking...AW nevermind, it's too goddamn easy.:wink2:

I'm not a doctor, however I think nicotine constricts the blood vessels. This might in some way have an effect on metabolism... just a guess.

Tibs,

any insight on this?
I don't think they go that in depth at doctorb school. You need a doctor$$$ for that type of info. :p

Nicotine is a stimulant and thus acts as an appetite suppressant... like a little cancer ridden diet pill. It may affect your metabolism in a small way... but essentially without it.. you'll feel hungry more often than you're used to.

Thump's oral fixation point is true also for some people.... that's why people try to chew gum, etc...

This weekend did not go as good as I hoped it would... I fell off the wagon hard but today I am back to trying to quit. I think I'm gonna go to that hypnotist on Wednesday and see what happens. If it works I'll save a lot of money and if it doesn't, then I'm only out 50 bucks. i figure it's worth a shot.

I am seriously thinking about that hypnotist that NJ found. He's conducting a seminar her in Columbus Feb. 9th right down the street from my house and it only costs $50. Does anyone in here know anyone who has had success with this method?

Scooter, have you heard anything about your father in law maybe doing something for me?
He's recovering from a double knee replacement right now. If you still need his services in about 4 weeks, we'll hook you up.

Oddly enough, I also decided to quit smoking last week. Let me know how the hypnotherapy or whatever goes....I'm actually not doing too bad. I was a pack/day smoker, and decided last Sunday (week ago) that I would quit on Monday. I had two packs, which I told myself I would smoke on the weekend, if I made it that far. I only smoked once on Monday, then twice each Tuesday, Wed, and Thu. I then, of course, smoked the two packs on Friday and Saturday, but didn't have any yesterday or so far today.

Scarlet, maybe something else that will help is just for us to come onto BP and be accountable for our smoking the day before. I mean, maybe it will help in some small way, knowing there are a bunch of people rooting for us, and if we smoked, we'd have to tell them, and they'd be disappointed....or maybe not. I don't know...I felt a lot better about quitting before reading this thread, because I thought the first couple of days were kinda tough, and you people are saying that the next couple of weeks are gonna be worse. Oh, well....

FKA,

I'm so disappointed in you. If you smoke, the terrorists win.

By the way, every cigarette you and SIMV smoke, kills a child in a thrid world nation.

How's that for a guilt trip.
