Five high school boys sent home for wearing Red, White and Blue on Cinco de Mayo

CA Students Wearing U.S. Flag Shirts Sent Home from School

WHISKEY
TANGO
FOXTROT

This douchebag weighs in on this with his "unbiased" opinion:

Ruben Navarrette: Disobedient brats no martyrs for freedom

When five students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California, taunted Latino students by wearing T-shirts bearing the American flag on Cinco de Mayo, even though administrators had told students beforehand not to wear flag clothing that day, they caused a ruckus, divided a community and reignited the culture wars.

Since when is the simple wearing of attire "taunting"? Glad he's not a football referee. :roll1:

The ruckus ensued when Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez -- apparently fearing that the boys' fashion choices might provoke a violent response from Latino students who have developed an emotional attachment to the faux holiday as "their day" -- told the youths to either turn their T-shirts inside out or go home.

So, a Latino principal tells white kids they can't wear the image of their national emblem because a specific ethnic group (to which he happens to belong) will be offended on "their day", a day which isn't even a real holiday in Mexico. I'd like to see a white principal tell a group of Hispanics they can't wear an image of their national flag on the Fourth of July (of course, if school were in session on that day).

Why not? Everyone else in society plays the victim. Nothing is ever anyone's fault. Someone else is always to blame. And so why shouldn't these five young men get a chance to portray themselves as an oppressed minority?

They're not trying to pass themselves off as an "oppressed minority", but rather they decided not to obey an obviously racist demand. If any other ethnic group (i.e., non-white) defied a similar order from a white principle, they'd be hailed as civil-rights heroes.

By the way, Ruben, no one is portraying these five kids as "martyrs", seeing as they are still alive (you have to die first to become a martyr, dipshit).

Both the Anglos and Latinos in this incident have gotten way more press than they deserve. The white kids get sympathy as "martyrs" for disobeying a directive from their principal, thereby flouting the concept that one needs to obey authority, especially when one is just a teenaged kid. The Latinos get sympathy for being "harassed," when all they were confronted with was a bunch of shirts with US flags on them - hardly a sign of oppression, I'd think.

What a cluster.

Here is some interesting information on the history of immigration to America. USA History: Immigration

It is estimated that over 400,000 immigrants served with the Union Army. This included 216,000 Germans and 170,000 Irish soldiers. There were several important German born military leaders such as August Willich, Carl Schurz, Alexander Schimmelfennig, Peter Osterhaus, Franz Sigel and Max Weber. One Irish immigrant, Thomas Meagher, became a highly successful commander in the war. Another important military figure was the Norwegian soldier, Hans Christian Heg, who was mainly responsible for establishing the Fifteenth Wisconsin Volunteers (also known as the Scandinavian Regiment).

Obviously, the tradition of immigrants going off to war before becoming "legal" continues. Why would someone just arrived in this country go off to fight ?
Because they believe in the American Dream. And are willing to fight and even die for it.
If one ideal can define who we are it is believing in the American Dream.
The point in all this is that immigrants are a great source of vitality to this country and if you start choking off immigration you will strangle a life blood source of the American Dream. And people who will happily fight for it.
(end of soap box rant)

No One condemns immigrants, just illegal ones.
