Q&A: Archie Griffin discusses the Heisman race, Ohio State, player compensation
By Zac Ellis

Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman winner, says another player will someday match his feat. (Walter Iooss Jr./SI)

Archie Griffin is best remembered for his ability to avoid defenders as a three-time All-America running back at Ohio State (1973-75). Now, instead of eluding tacklers, the Buckeyes great is bringing people together. As the President and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, Griffin is the head of a network of more than 450,000 Buckeyes around the world. It’s a job that’s brought him closer to his alma mater, where he’s worked since 1984.

Griffin’s mind is never far from football. The only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy (in 1974 and ’75), he continues to monitor the landscape of college athletics, and he partners with the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program, which recognizes high school seniors who excel in athletics, academics and community service.

Griffin spoke with SI.com about the 2013 college football season, the Heisman race, the pay-for-play debate and the Wendy’s Heisman program.

SI.com: Through five weeks of the college football season, there haven’t been many seismic changes near the top of the polls. A handful of teams could make arguments for the No. 1 ranking. Which programs have stood out thus far to you?

Archie Griffin: The season’s still very young. That’s the key. As this season goes on, things will fall out, and the cream will rise to the top. But I certainly think Alabama, being the reigning champion, is the team to beat right now. They’ve got a powerful program. They’ve done some truly outstanding things, and Nick Saban has done a wonderful job.

MARION — Archie Griffin continues to spread the word about a lesson he learned a long time ago from Woody Hayes.

Griffin is president and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, serving as the leader of 130,000 active members from across the nation.

While winning two Heisman Trophy awards as a tailback at The Ohio State University in the early 1970s, Griffin played for Hayes, the legendary Buckeyes head coach.

“Woody said to pay forward by being involved in your community,” Griffin said at the recent OSU Alumni Club of Marion County Big Ten Kickoff Bash XVII in the George Alber Student Center at Ohio State-Marion. “I have to do things to pay forward because that’s what coach Hayes said to do.

“People who have been fortunate, as in those who have a college education, have the duty to pay forward. It is special and it is a part of being a Buckeye. It’s what we do at Ohio State.”

Archie Griffin Cleveland radio interview (5 min mark)

How would Archie Griffin have fared in Urban Meyer's offense? The two-time Heisman winner says 'very well'
By Zack Meisel, Northeast Ohio Media Group
November 01, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In Archie Griffin's four years at Ohio State, the Buckeyes lost a grand total of five games. So, college football's only two-time Heisman Trophy winner knows a talented team when he sees one.

Urban Meyer's Ohio State squad has caught Griffin's attention. The Buckeyes are two wins shy of matching the longest winning streak in program history.

"20-0 is truly, truly outstanding and I expect it to climb from there," Griffin said in an interview with Cleveland.com. "I think this is an outstanding football team. When you see them play their best football, like they did this past week, great things can happen."

The Buckeyes are ranked fourth in the BCS standings, but Griffin expects them to rise by the end of the regular season, should they avoid a loss.

"I would be surprised that if we go through this season undefeated, we're not playing in the national championship game," Griffin said. "To go through two seasons totally undefeated, that's extremely difficult to do. I would be surprised. I think things will shake their way out."

OSU's Griffin Nominated as Finalist for Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class
By Big Ten Conference on November 3, 2013

Ohio State's Archie Griffin has been nominated as one of three finalists for the Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class as representatives from the 1970's. The candidates, as voted by an esteemed panel from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), are the seventh of a series of names that will be unveiled each Sunday throughout the remainder of the college football regular season. In commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game, the All-Century Class will highlight and honor great players and coaches throughout the history of The Granddaddy of Them All.

Griffin, the only player ever to win the Heisman Trophy twice, is also one of only two players ever to have started in four consecutive Rose Bowl Games. The three-time All-American gained a total of 412 yards on 79 carries during his Rose Bowl Game career, including 149 yards in his 1974 appearance. In his four years at Ohio State, Griffin became the NCAA career rushing leader, with 5,589 yards - a 6.1 average - and gained 100 yards or more in 31 consecutive regular season games. To this day, he remains the Buckeyes' career rushing leader. Griffin is synonymous with Ohio State, where he currently serves as CEO and president of the Ohio State Alumni Association. He was elected into the OSU Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and was a 1990 inductee into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.

The FWAA voting committee will select one Rose Bowl Game representative from each decade to comprise the All-Century Class. In addition, one overall player and one overall coach will be highlighted at a press conference on Selection Sunday, which will take place on December 8, 2013, in Pasadena.
