RB Carlos "El Guapo" Hyde (Official Thread)

SKULL SESSION: BAKER MAYFIELD IN OHIO'S GOOD GRACES, CARLOS HYDE'S CRAZY DAY, AND THE BUCKEYE DEFENSIVE LINE STAYS STRONG

GUAPO'S CRAZY DAY.
Nobody's ever had a day like Carlos Hyde had yesterday.

Guapo spent the day at the the hospital awaiting the birth of his first child all the way up until game time.

Hyde arrived in time to play, and scored both of the team's two touchdowns to help lead the Browns to their first victory in 635 days, and had an extremely fitting touchdown celebration.

After the game, Hyde immediately returned to the hospital where his wife – who watched the game – was just about to give birth.

To top it off, it was also his 28th birthday.

Not that it matters much, but he might be specifically referring to the second half in the 2013 B1G championship game, and very specifically about on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 when Ohio State failed to convert at a crucial juncture in the game (although the exact circumstances of why it was crucial escape me).

Yep--six minutes to play. MSU leading 27-24. OSU ball on the MSU 40 yard line.

3rd and 3: Braxton QB keep for 2 yards.
4th and 1: Braxton QB keep for 0 yards.

Turnover on downs.

BTW, A-hole Tim Jessberger, obviously a drunken moron Browns fan, blocked me after I replied to his idiotic Tweet.

It was both rude and correct.

Braxton had 7 rushes for 1 yd or less vs MSU.
Carlos had 0 rushes for less than 2 yards vs MSU.

Carlos was not on the field for 3rd down.
Carlos was a lead blocker on 4th down.

There's a reason we still say give it to Hyde. His love of the QB run cost him a title, along with a disastrous defense (mostly due to his defensive staff). Though the defense gave them great field position in those last 3 drives before the 4th down stop and ensuing TD that iced the game:

That drive (starting at the MSU 47)

Braxton rush 4 yds
Carlos rush 3 yds
Braxton rush 2 yds
Braxton rush 1 yd

The previous drive? (starting at the OSU 41)

Braxton rush 0 yds
Carlos rush 4 yds
Braxton pass 0 yds (inc)

The drive before that? (starting at the OSU 21)

Braxton pass 3 yds
Carlos rush 12 yds
Braxton pass 0 yds (inc)
Carlos rush 6 yds
Braxton rush 0 yds

I say we blame Tom Herman for this shit... I think we did at the time, and he has certainly earned renewed scrutiny and hate.

Thanks for the explanation, Tim.

FWIW, Braxton Miller rushed 1,062 yards (6.2 average) and 12 TDs in 2013, so it wasn't exactly stupid to call his number in that situation.

It's really nice to see that some Buckeye fans are still upset with the most successful coach in Ohio State history based on ONE call that he made five years ago. SMH

Agreed, Lord Jeff. Nothing wrong with the play call on that one. Heuerman needs to make his block.

That's why I said it was rude.

I'm not upset about it, but it was a very controversial choice to eliminate their bell cow tailback on both downs, and so the meme was born. When they lost to sparty again 2 years later by snubbing an even better tailback, it gave it new life.

Braxton has tremendous upside, and Urban's aggressive nature is why he has been so successful. With most people, their best qualities often coincide with their biggest weaknesses. Lincoln Riley's unbelievable offense made the same mistake of getting too cute against UGA down the stretch. It's a nitpick amidst an avalanche of offensive brilliance, much like with Urban, but it's a memorable outlier.

Arguing that a body of work shields an individual situation from criticism is not a good argument.

There are many, many examples of why this is silly, but topically, Urban Meyer has won 73 out of 81 games at Ohio State, therefore it was a good decision to keep Zach Smith as the WR coach.
