Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel deserves Heisman praise as well

J.T. Barrett isn’t the only Heisman Trophy candidate on Ohio State, according to Urban Meyer.

When discussing Heisman Trophy candidates, the name that comes immediately to mind for Ohio State is quarterback J.T. Barrett. And for good reason, considering the junior signal-caller has led the Buckeyes to a 4-0 record and doing so in record-breaking fashion. But head coach Urban Meyer says there’s another candidate that should be considered: Curtis Samuel. The Buckeyes H-back has been phenomenal this season and has proven his versatility in his ‘Percy Harvin’ role. This season alone, Samuel has rushed for 328 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries and has 23 receptions for 345 yards and three touchdowns.

Curtis has definitely been one of my favorite players since he showed up his freshman year, the kid has been everything you can ask for from a college athlete he seems to be about his business, from all accounts he's a hard worker and most of all he waited his turn. I got the chance to chat with him this past winter, I was out and about at home depot of all places, and I simply said that I would be looking out for him this season and I knew he would do big things.
So I for one hope that he continues on this tear and I hope he gets all the recognition he deserves.

I've been rooting for this kid from day 1, more because of my college buddy hyping him up to me so much after coaching him in peewee and being so close with the family. Great kid, from a great family, that just needed the opportunity like he has now. A few bad breaks since he's been at tOSU, but now it's his time to shine.

He didn't just wait his turn. Thats not the type of program urban runs. He worked hard and pushed those ahead of him (Brax and zeke) to be better and work even harder if they wanted to keep their job. He helped make the team better. He got his touches the last few years and was one of our best players last year.

Curtis Samuel motioned out of the backfield and lined up in the slot, one-on-one against Bowling Green defensive back Antonyo Sotolongo.

Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett snapped the ball as Samuel exploded off the line of scrimmage. Samuel then hit Sotolongo with a wicked move, faking outside before quickly rerouting inside to leave his defender in the dust. Barrett delivered the ball on target and 79 yards later it was a touchdown for Ohio State.

It was one of many in the Buckeyes' 77-10 season-opening win.

The entire sequence took a little over 10 seconds. Samuel went from running back to wide receiver to the end zone 80 yards away in the time it takes to tie your shoes.

“It’s pretty close to impossible,” Buckeyes linebacker Chris Worley says.

It has certainly looked that way so far.

Through five games, Samuel is Ohio State's leading receiver with 23 catches for 345 yards. He’s also second on the team in rushing, trailing only Mike Weber, with 410 yards on 50 carries. Samuel has six total touchdowns on the season.

No player in college football history has ever had 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Samuel has a legitimate chance at becoming the first.

Ohio State lines Samuel up all over the field. He has played running back, wide receiver and even taken Wildcat snaps from the quarterback position. If the Buckeyes’ offense is a chess set, Samuel is the Queen piece, possessing the ability to go anywhere he wants anytime he wants.

If it sounds like Samuel creates a lot of headaches for opposing teams, well, it should.

“I think Curtis is one-of-a-kind, honestly,” Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett says. “The versatility he has, at whatever position he chooses to play, is incredible. He has a big impact on our games.”

It's been frustrating watching how the staff used Samuel the last two weeks. If he's utilized better in the Indiana game he probably doubles his yardage and it's never a close game. Against Wisconsin he was usually surrounded as soon as he got the ball. On the ill advised triple option plays I think he totaled -14 yards.

On a positive note though, he saved the game twice in OT. On the first play a defender had him 5 yards in the backfield and he made 10 yards out of it. Right after the holding penalty the defense again looked like they were going to tackle him to for a loss to set up a 3rd and 15. Instead he got 10 yards and set up the TD.

Damn good football player and I don't think there are many other guys in the country that compare to him.
