RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

This will be a mistake.

Agreed. The only thing that really held him back at OSU was getting in the dog house.

He has a good NFL size and its rare for him to fumble. He isn't injury bit, and he is tough to bring down.

Now I say this remembering him at OSU, hopefully it still translates to the NFL.

I think Boom has great heart and is tough as nails but I never thought he would make a good NFL running back. Not enough quickness and not enough top speed for his size. I hope he makes it somewhere else of course but I'm not really surprised by this move.

I agree with this. The best thing for him to do is get on a practice squad and get really good at special teams. That way he can catch on as a #3 running back and special teams player. I think he can do that. Yet I don't see him cracking the normal RB rotation in the NFL. I hope I am wrong.

5. Daniel Herron RB Ohio State 5096 213 4.66 Cincinnati Bengals Practice Squad
Despite good instincts/vision with very quick feet and a deceptive burst through the hole, Herron?s lack of top end speed and a bad forty time led to him not being selected until the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. An aggressive runner who runs with excellent body lean, good strength and natural balance contribute to his ability to consistently run through arm/grab tackles to gain yards after contact. He is however a bit of a ?straight line? runner who lacks the wiggle to make tacklers miss, which is vital for success in the NFL. While he has excellent hands catching the ball, unless he improves greatly in pass protection he will never be able to contribute as a receiver in the NFL. If Herron can improve his pass protection he should be able to make it in the NFL as a backup tailback and third down running back.

To fill Sanu?s spot, the team has signed RB Daniel Herron from the practice squad. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said earlier in the regular season that he still needed to make more progress. Obviously he has made enough to get called up. The sixth-round pick played in all four preseason games, with 25 rushes for 42 yards and five receptions for 26 yards. He was waived on Aug. 31 and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 1. Herron was also added because Cedric Peerman?s status is up in the air after he injured his ankle during the first half of last Sunday?s game against San Diego.

BOOM?S DEBUT: Daniel ?Boom? Herron never rushed the punter at Ohio State, or in high school for that matter, so the Bengals have uncovered a talent the rookie running back didn?t know he possessed.

?I guess it?s one of those things they kind of just put me out there, and I was pretty good at it,? Herron said. ?I?m getting better at it, I?m working to get better at it. I?m having a lot of fun doing it, though.?

The sixth-round draft pick nearly blocked a punt in the Bengals? second preseason game and in his NFL regular season debut Sunday came off the edge and tipped a punt by the Cowboys? Brian Moorman. The punt still traveled 39 years despite Herron getting a hand on it.

?Obviously I didn?t get enough hand on it,? he said. ?So I have do to better next time.?

Herron had spent the entire season on the Bengals practice squad before the team signed him to the 53-man roster Dec. 4 after placing Mohamed Sanu on season-ending injured reserve and with it looking unlikely running back Cedric Peerman would play against the Cowboys because of an ankle injury.

?It means so much to me? Herron said of his NFL debut. ?It?s a dream come true. I?ve been working very hard for that moment. I?m just happy to be out there now.?

He logged 15 plays on special teams against the Cowboys. On Monday, Bengals coached Marvin Lewis noted the rookie?s effort.

?He was kind of the last one (of the draft class) not to have a chance to contribute this year,? Lewis said. ?All those guys have passed the same test getting this far, and now he got his real test in an NFL game and he was up to the challenge. He did the things that he?s shown (special teams coach Darrin Simmons) and I in practice for the last 16-17 weeks that we?ve been practicing. He?s shown us that in practice, and he went out there and did it.?
