Eddie George Cleveland Radio interview

At Ohio State Alumni Club banquet, Heisman winner Eddie George says Urban Meyer was 'only guy' to save OSU

By Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group
October 29, 2013

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The OSU Alumni Club of Greater Cleveland’s annual football appreciation banquet and the Ohio State football team developed a close relationship over half a century of celebrating the Buckeyes. It wasn’t too long ago that both, the banquet and the program, were in trouble.

Tuesday night, 300 fans turned out for an event at Windows on the River that featured two Heisman Trophy winners in Archie Griffin and Eddie George, and another guest, legendary OSU lineman John Hicks, who finished second. While they were there, former stars and fans could talk about an undefeated OSU team and the 20-game winning streak to start Urban Meyer’s tenure with the Buckeyes.

So it all worked out. Not that it was easy.

“Of course you worried about the program,” George said of the time that followed Jim Tressel’s forced resignation over NCAA violations and the 6-7 season in 2011 under interim coach Luke Fickell. “When you have a guy like Tressel that had done so much for the university, it concerns you. To be the head coach at Ohio State is being the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. So it’s a complex business. It’s not just about X’s and O’s and inspiring your team on Saturday. It’s about engaging and fundraising and knowing donors and recruiting and staying ahead of the curve and having a system in place that is consistent through your entire staff.

“There are so many complex parts to this that it takes a strong person to do that. And Tressel fit that for 10 years. So you have got to find somebody that can come in there and seamlessly understand that and continue to have a CEO mindset, and I think Urban was the perfect guy for that.

“I think he was the only guy who could come into Ohio State and continue that success. Anybody else would have had a difficult time transitioning and understanding that. No disrespect to Luke Fickell at all, I think he’s a tremendous coach, tremendous upside, a lot of potential. But it showed you youth and inexperience can swallow you up.”

Eddie George is impressed by Ohio State's 20-game win streak because 'this is not a finished product'
By Zack Meisel, Northeast Ohio Media Group
November 02, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sure, Eddie George is impressed that the Buckeyes have won 20 consecutive games.

The former Ohio State running back and Heisman Trophy winner has been most amazed, however, by the Buckeyes' ability to eke out wins even when not playing their best.

"I think Ohio State is a team that's still defining who they are," George said in an interview with Cleveland.com. "They're still defining their character, the type of team they're going to be. They're not what they were two weeks ago. They're a much better team than they were two weeks ago."

George said he is eager to see how successful Urban Meyer can be at Ohio State once he has a couple of years in Columbus under his belt.

"What impresses me the most is how he's been able to establish his culture, his thumbprint on the program and really redefine and transform what he wants them to be and along the way he's winning ball games," George said. "This is not a finished product and I'm curious to see once he really gets his guys and has them buy into what he expects, they're really going to be good.

"When you look at their schedule and who they've played, you say, 'Well, they really haven't played anyone of note that's been in the top 15, but to win that many ball games and not play your A game every weekend, that's been really impressive."

Drawing on experiences from a successful career in professional football and business, Buckeye legend Eddie George is giving back and preparing the next generation of sports leaders — as a teacher.

If there is one lesson I learned during my time at Ohio State, it’s that the concept of “paying forward” is as powerful as the man who spent his lifetime embracing the mantra.

That belief is what brought me back to Ohio State this year — not as a coach, administrator or fundraiser, but as a teacher. Yes, 20 years after last stepping foot inside an Ohio State classroom, I was back leading a management course with Dr. David Greenberger, associate dean for staff, human resources and administration and a professor of management and human resources at Fisher College of Business.

Training with the pros
My goal for the course — Leveraging Athletics for Business and Personal Success — was to provide a 360-degree perspective on the life cycle of professional sports, topics that included contract law and the role of agents, financial advisors and business managers.

For perspective on many of these crucial subjects, we proudly welcomed to campus a number of prominent sports figures, including Fred Whitfield, president and chief operating officer of the Charlotte Hornets; super-agent Leigh Steinberg; Troy Vincent, executive vice president of football operations for the NFL; and Zac Minor, a trained actor whose skit-based “Life Skills” program has become a critical part of player development in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

The excitement and interest from the students were overwhelming. Seeing them so actively engaged with the curriculum and in tune with these leaders in sports was inspiring and humbling. I never thought I’d be teaching anything. Looking back, I guess I was one of those students who struggled to stay awake in class. So now, having been on the other side of the classroom, I applaud and commend the professors at Ohio State because it’s a hard job to do.

Regardless of all the hard work that went into creating the course and teaching it, I can honestly say it was worth every minute. It was gratifying, liberating and therapeutic. Every week I gave a part of myself, and in return I saw the light bulb switched on for all the future athletes, agents, business managers and financial advisors in that classroom.

Not sure how many people are aware of just how successful Eddie has been in the business world. He's leveraged his landscape architecture degree from tOSU to build probably the premier LA consulting firm in Ohio. And Eddie George's Grill 27 just announced a new location somewhere in the Columbus 'burbs. Hard to survive in the tough restaurant business, but Eddie seems to be thriving.

Very impressive stuff, and documents what a good idea it is for Buckeye athletes to listen closely whenever Eddie speaks.

Ran into Eddie at a bar in Charlottesville recently. Talked to him for about 20 minutes about everything except football - business, acting, education, etc. He is an incredibly nice guy and a great example of someone that has found success on and off the field.
