RB Ezekiel Elliott (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Dallas Cowboys)

Elliott shines at state finale
By Chuck Martin / May 25, 2013

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. ? Ezekiel Elliott?s future may be in football, but on Saturday he lit up the track at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

The John Burroughs senior will attend Ohio State next year as a running back. He left his mark on the way out, winning all four of his events at the Class 3 state meet.

After losing out in the two hurdle races ? the 110 meters and 300 meters ? as a junior to friendly rival Dapo Akinmoladun of Grandview, Elliott became more determined to capture gold in his final state meet. He nearly toppled Akinmoladun?s record (13.56) in the 110s with his 13.87, and he followed with a first-place time of 39.01 in the 300s.

?Last year was a little bit of let down for me,? Elliott said. ?I had a decent year, but it wasn?t as good as I wanted. I had a little chip on my shoulder when I came out this season.?

Elliott also atoned for his fifth-place finish in the 100 last year by winning in a time of 11.03, and he added the 200-meter dash this season because he knew the team could use the points. In his closest race of the day, Elliott held on for first in the 200 (22.25).

?Coach was a little hesitant to let me run the 200, but I told him I wanted to get those points because I knew we had a chance this year,? said Elliott, whose Bombers took second with 55 ? points. ?We put in the work and I ran all four events every meet this year.?

Elliott said football may have prevented him from enjoying his typical success last year. He admitted to being distracted, especially with multiple recruiting visits during the spring season. With his letter signed for Ohio State, Elliott could return his focus to his second sport. There had been talk about Elliott being a two-sport athlete in college, but he said he?s being patient with any decisions until he gets a feel for the demands of college football.

?That?s something they want me to do, but I?m not sure if it?s something I want to commit to yet,? Elliott said. ?I?m going to see how my freshman football season goes. If everything goes well and I do what I want to do, I?ll put some time in track and run indoor.

?I love track, but this may be my last meet. It?s hard to see it all end; I leave for orientation in two weeks. Everything?s going so fast, I?m trying to catch every moment I can.?

The dual workouts and extra weight room work may have been a real benefit in allowing Elliott to extend his repertoire to include the 200 meters. He was pushed by Kennet?s Darius Warren at sectionals, so Elliott knew how stiff of a challenge he had before him. Warren was right there at the line and finished second in 22.36.

?I think this year, getting in the weight room helped me for track,? said Elliott, who has added 60 pounds since his freshman year to reach his current 210 pounds. ?I don?t think I?d be able to run four events and do that well and win it all if I wasn?t as strong as I am.?

Ezekiel Elliott went to last year?s Class 3 state track meet focused on taking down Dapo Akinmoladun, the great hurdler from Kansas City Grandview.

Instead, it was Akinmoladun who stole the show. The senior won the 110 hurdles in an all-class state record of 13.56, and he won the 300s in an impressive clocking of 37.34. Elliott, then a junior at John Burroughs, finished second in both those events and fifth in the 100.

?Last year was a little bit of a letdown for me,? Elliott said. ?I had a decent year. But it wasn?t as good as I wanted it to be. So I had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder.?

He took it out on the opposition at the 2013 state meet. Elliott won the 100-meter dash (11.03), the 200 (22.25), the 110 hurdles (13.87) and the 300 hurdles (39.01) to lead the Bombers to a second-place finish as a team with 55? points, just behind champion Grandview, which tallied 58.

?I was absolutely blown away,? Burroughs coach Daniel Harris said of Elliott?s performance. ?I tend to have a lot of words (to say) and I didn?t have many words for him. I just gave him a hug.

Ezekiel Elliott, John Burroughs football

Won four events – the 100, 200 and both hurdle events – at the Missouri Class 3 state meet. The thing that was so impressive was that he had little rest time between the 110s and the 100 and the 300s and the 200. He tied McCluer North standout hurdler Aaron Mallet for the best time (13.77) in the 110 hurdles this spring.

“He only lost one race all year and that was the 100 at districts,” Burroughs coach Daniel Harris said of Elliott, who is headed to Ohio State on a football scholarship but might also run track. “He’s managed the four events well.”

Ezekiel Elliott?s decision to play football at Ohio State University ? as opposed to University of Missouri or Notre Dame or a number of other contenders ? went down to 6 a.m. on national signing day. But for his parents, which football jersey he will wear was not the most important thing.

?He knows that his main purpose of going to school is to get the degree,? said his mother, Dawn Elliott.

?You go to college to go to school, and he just happened to be blessed enough to be a good enough football player to be able to play football at that level and to pay for that degree.?

As a running back, Elliott was a top football recruit across the nation. He led John Burroughs School to three straight football state championship appearances and was also a standout in track and basketball. Along with his athletic feats, Elliott maintained good grades at Burroughs, a strenuous academic school, which he attended since seventh grade.

?John Burroughs is very strong academically, and we wanted him to have a challenge,? Dawn Elliott said. ?That?s why he went there.?

Suzanne Hamon, Elliott?s pre-calculus teacher his senior year at Burroughs, appreciates how well Elliott reacts when there is pressure on him, on the field or in the classroom.

?He responds well to his back up against the wall,? Hamon said. ?He does a good job with that. When you say, ?This is what you need to do, this is why it?s going to pay off,? he responds well.?

As an athlete, Elliott was the All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year in football his senior year, along with being placed on the All-Conference First Team for the Metro League in basketball. In track, Elliott competed at the state tournament, finishing first in four different events.

As a student, Elliott particularly enjoyed his African-American studies class, which he took during his senior year.

?It?s a history class, but from the Afrocentric point of view, and usually you get it from the Eurocentric point of view,? Elliott said. ?You learn the history of black people from the black point of view.?

Elliott could see early playing time for No. 2 Ohio State
By Steve Eighinger | Special to STLhighschoolsports.com

Former John Burroughs running back Ezekiel Elliott might have an opportunity to make an impact at Ohio State sooner rather than later.

The 2012 Post-Dispatch All-Metro offensive player of the year after scoring 50 touchdowns and rushing for 2,155 yards, Elliott could be one of the Ohio State backs who benefits from all-Big Ten Carlos Hyde's three-game suspension to start the season.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer recently said on ESPN's College Football Live program that Elliott and fellow true freshman Dontre Wilson of Desoto, Tex., are now prime candidates for additional playing time early in the year.

"I can be used as a rusher and as a receiver, and yes, as a Percy Harvin-type (of player)," Elliott said in published reports.

Meyer says Elliott is an ideal candidate for Ohio State's H-back ? or hybrid position ? in what is expected to be an explosive Buckeyes offense. Ohio State, 12-0 a year ago, is ranked No. 2 behind defending national champion Alabama heading into its Aug. 31 opener against Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference.
