CLASS 3 FOOTBALL: Elliott takes out frustration, leads Burroughs past Park Hills Central in quarterfinal
By Joe Harris | Special to STLhighschoolsports.com | Posted: Saturday, November 10, 2012

PARK HILLS ? Ezekiel Elliott was frustrated.

One of the area?s leading rushers, the John Burroughs standout was held to just four yards on two carries in the first half of the Bombers' Class 3 quarterfinal at Park Hills Central on Saturday. Making matters worse, Central?s keep-away offense had held the ball for all but five of the game?s first 24 minutes.

But Burroughs unleashed the beast in the second half.

Elliott was a one-man wrecking crew, rushing for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the game?s final two quarters and leading Burroughs to a 24-0 win.

The No. 1 team in the STLhighschoolsports small-schools rankings, Burroughs will play Monett in the semifinals next Saturday.

?They (Central) are good at controlling the ball,? said Elliott, an Ohio State recruit. ?I?m not used to not having the ball. We came out and our line did a great job.?

Burroughs took control with a 51-yard drive to open the second half. Elliott ran the ball on all 11 plays and capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Burroughs a 10-0 lead.

Burroughs forced Central on a three and out and got the ball right back. Three plays later, Elliott broke free for a 59-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0 late in the third.

?They over-pursue,? Elliott said. ?So we ran the counter play and the hole was big enough to drive a truck through. It was a great call by our coach.?

The scores broke open the game and forced Central out of its conservative mindset, which played into the Burroughs defense?s hand. Xavier Bledsoe ruined Central?s first two drives of the second half with sacks as the Bombers allowed just 5 total yards in the second half.

?This is the first time we?ve faced real adversity this season,? Bledsoe said. ?That?s one heck of a team. They are strong up front, and at halftime we knew we had to pick it up.?

Elliott added to his day with a 1-yard run late in the fourth. Behind a strong effort from its offensive line, Burroughs totaled 194 yards from scrimmage in the second half, after amassing just 45 yards in the first two quarters.

?They?ve been showing up big every week,? Elliott said of the offensive line. ?They came out and created huge holes in the second half. They are the reason we won the game. They took us to the promised land.?

Alton's Ezekiel Elliott brightest star in John Burroughs galaxy

For The Telegraph
Elliott has scored an area-best 44 touchdowns this season

Alton's Ezekiel Elliott rambles for yardage in a recent John Burroughs game. The Bombers of St. Louis are aiming for the Class 3A championship in Missouri this season.

The best prep football player in Alton ? and likely the entire area ? doesn?t go to high school at AHS or Marquette Catholic. In fact, he isn?t a student at a Southwestern Illinois school.

Ezekial Elliott of Alton goes to high school at John Burroughs in St. Louis and he loves it. Elliott wouldn?t trade it for the world. It?s like family to him.

?I?m happy and we are a close-knit group,? he said of the Bombers. ?It?s like a brotherhood.?

The 12-0 Bombers feel the same way about Elliott. He?s the centerpiece of a powerhouse team that?s eyeing a Class 3A state championship. John Burroughs plays at Monett on Saturday in the semifinals and if the Bombers win, they?ll be in the state championship game for the third consecutive season.

They made it to the finals at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis the past two years, but lost both times. Elliott wants a different ending in 2012.

?Our goal is to win it,? said Elliott, a 6-foot, 220-pound running back. ?We have a group of seniors who have been to the championship game twice. And it wasn?t a good feeling to walk off the field without a state championship.

?We don?t want to walk off the field with a loss.?

If John Burroughs can prevail Saturday, you can be assured Elliott will do everything in his power to ensure a state championship next week. Just check his statistics. They tell the story

He has scored an area-best 44 touchdowns, rushed 161 times for 1,715 yards and snared 11 passes for 308 yards. It?s no wonder Elliott is regarded as one of the most celebrated players in the St. Louis area. He?s going to sign with Ohio State in February and continue his football career at a new level.

The Buckeyes won the recruiting fight for Elliott. Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa and Nebraska were also in the hunt, but Elliott?s future is in Columbus, Ohio.

Elliot sparks John Burroughs past Monett in semifinals
By Richard Polen Globe Sports Writer

MONETT, Mo. ? The Ezekiel Elliott Show was delayed by Monett?s defense, but ultimately the Ohio State-bound running back led John Burroughs to another appearance in the Show-Me Bowl.

The Bombers scored three touchdowns in a five-minute span of the fourth quarter and defeated Monett 28-6 in a MSHSAA Class 3 semfinal Saturday at Burl Fowler Stadium.

John Burroughs (14-0) will face Maryville in the championship game next Friday at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

Elliott rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries while the Bombers? defense kept Monett scoreless until the final minute.

?It all starts with the line,? said Elliott, a 6-foot, 205-pound senior. ?They?ve been doing their job and making it easy for me.?

The Bombers mixed in short passes and competed 13 of 17 attempts for 88 yards. Meanwhile, the defense limited Monett to 134 yards rushing on 51 carries. Cubs quarterback Kyle Woods completed 5 of 15 passes for 59 yards.

It all added up to the third consecutive trip to the Show-Me Bowl for No. 1-ranked John Burroughs, which was runner-up in each of the past two seasons.

?Our motto all season has been ?unfinished business,? ? Elliott said. ?We?re ready. We?ve been twice. We?re back to where we want to be.?

Among the many honorees in nine different sports announced as 2012 All-Stars by Metro League commissioner Dory Smith on Monday, one announcement was no surprise at all.

And that worst-kept secret of probably the entire 2012 Fall sports season was that John Burroughs running back Ezekiel Elliott -- the conference leader in rushing yards, total yards, all-purpose yards, and the St. Louis area leader in touchdowns -- was named Metro League Football Player of the Year, after a weekend vote conducted amongst the league's coaches.

Elliott, who was a city-wide Player of the Year candidate last year, after scoring 44 touchdowns and leading the Bombers to their second straight Show-Me Bowl state title game, is widely considered the leading candidate to win the award this year, as he heads into his final high school game with 1,965 yards and a whopping 47 touchdowns in only 13 games.

Burroughs (13-0), the No. 1-ranked team in Missouri Class 3 football, will play second-ranked Maryville (14-0) in the Show-Me Bowl state championship game, Friday at 1 p.m., at the Edward Jones Dome.

And with a mere 35 yards and three more touchdowns, Elliott would reach the previously thought impossible milestone of rushing for 2,000 yards and scoring 50 touchdowns in the same season.

Burroughs' Ezekiel Elliott Unanimous Choice For Fall Male MVP of the Year Honor

Senior touchdown machine will lead Bombers in third straight state championship game appearance on Friday, before heading to Ohio State next year.

LADUE -- On the eve of the biggest, and final, game of his remarkable high school career, John Burroughs senior football star Ezekiel Elliott has just a few hours left to lament the two goals he set for himself going into this season.

"Zeke," as he's called by friends, family, and teammates, desperately wants to break the the St. Louis area single-season touchdown record, which currently stands at 54.

"I just want that record," said Elliott, who has 47 touchdowns this season, after scoring three times in the JBS' 28-6 win over Monett (MO) in the state semifinals last Saturday. "I still think I can get it."

But what Elliott and all his Bomber teammates want a hundred times more -- perhaps a thousand times more -- is to finally win that state championship they've been so heart-breakingly close to, but weren't able to get the last two years.

"We've got some unfinished business," said Elliott. "The whole team knows it. We've been talking about it all summer. It's our motto. We have some unfinished business to attend to. And we're not gonna stop until we take care of it."

The Bombers will get their chance to reconcile that business on Friday, when they'll kick off Show-Me Bowl weekend with a 1 p.m. matchup at the Edward Jones Dome against Maryville (MO), for the MSHSAA Class 3 state title.

On this Thanksgiving day though, Elliott and his teammates can enjoy yet another honor for the future Ohio State University star, as he has been unanimously named the 2012 Fall Sports Male Patch MVP of the Year.

And along with the Metro League Player of the Year award he won over the weekend, Elliott is probably just beginning to collect all the 'PoY' hardware he's earned this season.

"He's a tremendous kid and great ballplayer," said Burroughs head coach Gus Frerotte, after another three-touchdown day by Elliott carried the Bombers to a win over Monett. "He deserves all that's coming to him. I told him that we were going to lean on him, and he's been there every time."

Going into his final game, Elliott leads the area in touchdowns (47) and all-purpose yards (2,638), and ranks fifth overall in rushing (1,935).

He needs just 65 yards, to go over 2,000 for the season, and with three touchdowns, Elliott would become one of only a handful of Missouri players ever to top 50 in one season.

And if he just hit his normal yards per game rushing average of 148.8, Elliott would move into third place on the single-season rushing list, which win or lose on Friday, would just about lock up every local and statewide Player of the Year award there is to be had.

But all of that comes Friday and beyond, today is just our honor to call John Burroughs football phenom Ezekiel Elliott, the 2012 Fall Sports Male Patch MVP of the Year.

I've been watching the State title game off on and on today. This can do it all. Took his first touch 79 yards for a TD, returned a kickoff 84 for another TD and just ran over two guys for a 1 yard TD. He also plays defense. We're getting a great player folks.

EDIT: He's got 352 all purpose yards (214 rushing) and 3 TD's through 3 quarters of play.
