RB Ira Guilford (Official Thread)

so? thats a miami excuse attitude.
Guilford's rap sheet isn't long enough for scUM south. He needs twelve more arrests or a police chief daddy to bail him out once. He would then meet enrollment standards in Coral Gables.

Personally, I agree he deserves another chance. I'm not convinced that he needs to be given that second chance here, however.

Like DiHard said, set a very strict set of standards for him. Including a personal journal of his training regiment that is set in place by the staff.

If he meets this extreme set of standards, he would have proven his desire to return to this team, and I say give him a chance to redeem himself. If he fails to meet these standards, support his move to a different school, wish him well and good luck, and then cut the cord.

Guilford had no previous record. He has agreed to testify against Louis Irizarry if his case goes to trial. That pretty much means Lou's will not go to trial now. Guilford has paid the student they ambushed all of his money back and paid a semester of his tuiton in an attempt to prove he is sincere in his lesson learned.

Good Luck, Ira Guilford. I hope you are more sincere than the last tailback who said the right things at times.

I think he should have a second chance but with conditions. No screw ups of any kind. Attend class and keep his grades up with the view of progressing towards a degree. Sit out the remainder of this year, sit out spring ball and not come back to the team (practice) until fall.

Ohio State is more than wins but taking kids and turning them into men who are productive citizens. If Ira never makes it to the NFL - who cares. But if Ira can get his degree and turn his life around - then he wins and we win as a society.

By engaging this young man, Ohio State can make a difference. By kicking him out we have no means to engage him and change him for the better.

Hilarious that most of you consider beating somebody and robbing them a "mistake". Interesting how most of you seem conservative on the political boards, but then turn into bleeding heart liberals when it comes to scumbag Buckeye players.
just wondering...since you were there (obviously you were...you know exactly what happened) why didnt you tell them to knock it off?

I'm really torn on this one. He did something really stupid but everybody deserves a second chance. On the other hand he should have been thinking about football and obviously the kid is easily manipulated into doing stupid shit. Another thing is that OSU has had alot of distractions in the last two years I think we might want to set an example by kicking him off the team.

I'm sure it's a hard decision to make but I have faith the team will maike the right decision. This is a tough situation this kid has put himself in no matter what the consequences are he can o0nly blame himself.

Hmmm, beating up and robbing a student on campus is not a simple mistake or poor choice. It is unexcusable. Youth is not a plausible excuse for those actions. I don't understand how someone in their late teens(or even just out of kindergarten) does not know that assault and robbery are wrong.

I hope that he has legitimate remorse for what he did to that student and how his actions affected that student, more than just remorse for the opportunity he lost with the Buckeyes.

I agree, robbing and beating a student is not a simple mistake or an accident. Some mistakes deserve a second opportunity, but some are so inexcusable that the first opportunity is the last. This is one of those mistakes IMO. Second of all I don't want our program to be like Miami and FSU. I don't want criminals on our team, I would rather be average then have a bunch of felons playing for us.

Bell-Guilford will testify if called upon against Irizarry when his trial begins next week.
That's a bitch move. I would say Guilford shouldn't fuck with Youngstown's boricua population, then I remembered he's from Hoboken.

I'd give Guilford the chance to walk on in 2005 if he's diligent in his studies this year. Is he even in school still?

oh...that must mean he was the one who jumped out and beat the piss out of somebody while louis just stood there.

Once he got back into the car with that piece of shit, he deserved everything coming his way. Guiliford could have run away. But wait, considering the speed of the OSU running backs we see today, Irizarry probably would have caught him.

Hummm ... hope Ira gets his life straightened out and walks the straight and narrow. He's lucky that he's not looking at prison from the wrong side of the bars. Any talk of football should be well down the line. Too premature to even think about something like that.

a few additional items from the C-bus Dispatch this morning

Guilford and Irizarry attacked and robbed a student on a campus street May 1, prosecutors say.

Guilford cooperated almost immediately after he was arrested and passed a liedetector test that cleared him of the robbery, Franklin County Assistant Prosecutor Doug Stead said.

Guilford punched Kenneth Whitwell, Stead said. Guilford has paid Whitwell $3,700 to cover the cost of classes Whitwell missed after the attack.

Guilford apologized to all involved. "It was a case of pure stupidity," he said.

He agreed to testify against Irizarry should there be a trial.

Hmmm-

I paraphrase Coach Tressel, "The last thing we want to do is put our young people in a situation where they don't have opportunities"

So, that kind of tells you that JT is a second chance type guy. I don't know if I agree with that in this case, but Irizarry had a second chance as well.... and I do believe you need to be consistent.

The other factor is that it appears that Guilford understands that he made a mistake, not only because it got him in trouble, but also that he appreciates, at least in some part, the suffering that it inflicted on Mr Whitwell... by that I mean that Whitwell suffered a loss as a result of him being attacked. (I wonder if the 3700 is the whole amount of the loss, or half... and where's Louis?)

Another factor is the view of Mr Whitwell. Does he feel that Guilford has acted in such a way as to show remorse for his actions and does he feel that Guilford, on his own, represents a danger to the campus community going forward. Its hard to know how much, if any interaction they've had, but obviously enough for Ira to compensate him.

Finally- How does the team feel? I hope they are very reluctant to accept him back, but I would think that Maybe around Springtime he can get a sense fo whether or not he still 'fits'

Anyway, I certainly hope that, whatever the Athletic Department and Ira work out, that its best for Ira in the long run and that he puts this behind him.

I agree.. I think it great that people can condemn kids and not offer a second opportunity. They had no problems with Steve, Brandon, Reggie, Louis, Santanio, Troy Smith, hell Louis assulted a guy as well but people were all about giving him a second opp. For Gods sake look at all the shit Mo C did we all wanted to give him an opportunity.

There is a saying that says "bad association spoil useful habits". Every man is responsible for his actions, but I think this is the case with Ira. He got caught up with a bad apple and made a horrible mistake. I truly believe that Tressel WILL give this kid an opporunity, but the road block will be the Atheletic department. I also agree with the poster how does the victim feel in all of this. I would hope it would factor intot the decsion process...

I will also say that I am very biased in my opinio here based on personal expereince, but a 17 year old kid should not be asked to give up his dream because his admitidly stupid, uncharactersitc mistake. He had no prior record, seems sincere, worked with the law 100%, made restitutions to the victim, has done all that has been asked... what makes this crime so horrible that he does not deserve a 2nd opportuity at The Ohio State University?
