RB Marcus Crowley (Official Thread)

Strong Senior Season Put Marcus Crowley on OSU’s Radar

It’s not like Marcus Crowley was an unknown quantity.

He was a backup running back on the varsity team as a freshman and sophomore at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida. Playing that early is no small feat at a place that produces college football players every single year like Trinity Christian does.

That lineage also includes a pair of current Buckeyes in redshirt freshman cornerback Shaun Wade and true freshman cornerback Tyreke Johnson.

As a junior, Crowley began to take ownership of the position and rushed for 1,210 yards on 197 attempts (6.1 ypc) in 12 games. He had four games of at least 160 yards rushing and scored 12 touchdowns on the season.

As a senior, however, ownership turned to domination.

In 14 games, Crowley (6-1 200) rushed for 2,325 yards on 222 carries (10.5 ypc), scoring 28 touchdowns. He hit the 100-yard mark in his final nine games and only failed to hit 100 yards three times — all blowout wins.

Crowley went over 200 yards rushing in a game five times this past season and had three carries of over 90 yards.

Following his junior season, Crowley committed to the University of Miami, and rebuffed offers from Florida and Alabama. He visited Miami routinely throughout 2018, and then around the middle of October, Ohio State offered.

Soon after that offer, Miami visited Crowley. Soon after thatvisit, OSU running backs coach Tony Alford visited Crowley. Two weeks later, Crowley was taking an official visit to Ohio State and the writing was on the wall for the Hurricanes.

Following his official visit, Crowley committed to the Buckeyes, and this past Wednesday he signed his OSU letter of intent and will enroll at Ohio State next month.

Things moved quickly for all involved, which is apt for a talented runner like Crowley.

“When he came up on the radar, especially after having the season that he had, we jumped all over him, and we’re really excited about him,” OSU head coach Ryan Day said on signing day.

OHIO STATE EARLY ENROLLEE RUNNING BACK MARCUS CROWLEY PREPARED TO WAIT HIS TURN, BUT STRIVING TO “BE GREAT”

102582_h.jpg

As an early enrollee who is already on campus, Marcus Crowley has the opportunity to compete for a potentially significant role as a true freshman at Ohio State.

With the departure of Mike Weber to the NFL draft, J.K. Dobbins is the only running back on the Buckeyes’ roster with extensive playing experience. That leaves the door open for any other running back on the roster to earn regular playing time, and there are only three other scholarship running backs who will be on campus this spring: Demario McCall, Master Teague and Crowley.

McCall, a fourth-year junior who has seen some playing time as a runner, receiver and returner over the past three years, is the veteran of the group and should be in line for a bigger role in 2019 – though the Buckeyes could opt to use him as a third-down back or an H-back instead of as an every-down running back.

If not McCall, Teague would likely be next in line to be the No. 2 running back. But he played in only four games as a true freshman last year, preserving his redshirt, so he’s still going to have to prove himself to demonstrate he’s ready for a bigger role and earn his place on the depth chart.

That gives Crowley a chance, if he performs well this spring, to push his way up the depth chart quickly and make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes in 2019.

In his first semester as a Buckeye, though, Crowley says his focus right now is on learning from the older running backs and improving himself.

“J.K., Demario and Master, they're all great backs, and I'm just trying to put the work in and wait my time,” Crowley said while meeting with the media earlier this month.

As he has adjusted to life as a Buckeye, Crowley says Dobbins, McCall and Teague have all helped show him the way.

“They took me under their wing and they’re teaching me a lot,” Crowley said. “Teaching me the culture, teaching me the playbook and everything.”

Watching his ultimate highlights on the first page (post #12), Marcus is impressive and definitely better than his mid-3* ranking

Just now watched this. 2,325 yards on just 222 carries (10.5 ypc) and 28 TDs (a TD every eight touches)? How is this kid still just a 3-star?

Rivals and 24/7 have him at 4 stars now.

Buckeye Football Freshman Focus — RB Marcus Crowley

Marcus-Crowley-Freshman-Focus-1170x725.jpg

Back in early December of 2017, Marcus Crowley committed to the University of Miami.

As a Jacksonville product from Trinity Christian Academy, it was no surprise that Miami was a lure.

A few months later, Alabama would extend an offer, but Crowley remained solid.

Eventually, the football season began and Ohio State found themselves in need of another running back in their 2019 class. They scoured the country — but didn’t have to look too hard to find Crowley, who attended the same school as current Buckeyes Shaun Wade and Tyreke Johnson.

Once the coaching staff landed on Crowley, they went after him with all guns blazing. They offered in him October, then OSU running backs coach Tony Alford visited him a couple of weeks later. A couple of weeks after that, Crowley took an official visit to Ohio State, decommitted from Miami, and then committed to the Buckeyes.

Despite the senior-year drama, Crowley remained focused and rushed for 2,325 yards, doubling his junior year performance. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida.

Crowley was a 4-star prospect and the No. 26 running back in the 247Sports Composite.

He graduated early and took part in winter conditioning and spring football for the Buckeyes.

What To Like
Marcus Crowley has tremendous vision and a great feel for running in traffic. He is patient when necessary and in a hurry when needed. He is just as comfortable stretching a play wide as he is bursting into the hole like the Kool-Aid Man.

The first carry in this highlight video showcases his patience and vision, and also exhibits just how comfortable he is on a football field with 11 defenders tasked with taking him down.

The second run in the video shows the kind of tough inside runner he will need to be in Ohio State’s downhill offense.
