How Master Teague won over Ohio State with epic high school practice

David Watson remembers the day in clear detail.

Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford was standing on his sideline in Murfreesboro, Tenn., some 20 miles southeast of Nashville. And he was seeing quite a show, because above all, Watson remembers the punishment being doled out on the practice field that afternoon by his star pupil, tailback Master Teague.

“He always practiced hard, but somebody somewhere put it in his ear that physicality was something people wanted to see,” Watson, Teague’s head coach at Blackman High School and now an assistant at rival Oakland, told Lettermen Row. “Coach Alford, the day he was there, Master ran with a harder and more physical nature than I’d ever seen out of him.

“You could tell he just really wanted that Ohio State offer. How physical he ran — instead of outrunning guys, which he could do, it was almost like he turned and looked for contact. I think he was trying to answer any question. How can someone who’s such a good kid off the field, does he have that mean streak on the field? I think he answered it that day, and Ohio State offered a couple days later.”

Teague committed, signed with the Buckeyes and now is carving a role as a complementary piece to the sensational J.K. Dobbins. The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder is coming off his first career 100-yard game after the 106-yard outburst in Ohio State’s throttling of Indiana last Saturday to open Big Ten play.

Re: “First of all, when Master does things right way, it sure gives you a leg to stand on when talking to players about doing things the right way,” Watson said. “Kids and society in general are kind of cynical, and people are looking to take shortcuts to success.

“Master just does everything right, believes in the right things and is successful. His work ethic is outstanding, always putting in extra time. Weight room, speed training, everything you could ask of someone to do and probably even more. He goes above and beyond, and it just gives more credibility when you’re stressing that to other players.”

The kind of young man we really like to have on the team, etc. If Dobbins goes pro after this season and Master Teague is healthy; there is no doubt in my mind that Master Teague will be the "the man" at running back next year.

Master Teague Making Impact as Buckeyes’ Backup Running Back

19-09-28-FB-0088-DH-Edited.jpg

One of the most-pressing concerns for Ohio State head coach Ryan Day heading into this season was finding a running back who could help carry the load with junior starter JK Dobbins.

Battling through injuries in fall camp and therefore lacking practice reps, redshirt freshman running back Master Teague was on the outside looking in for that job — at least until the games got underway.

Finally healthy at the end of camp, Teague stated his case late, but made a lasting impression. By the end of the first game against Florida Atlantic, he had seemingly managed to claim a prominent role in the Buckeye offense as the primary backup to Dobbins.

He carried the ball eight times for 49 yards against the Owls, but has topped double-digit carries in every game since.

And when Teague is in the game he adds another dynamic to the Buckeye offense because of his skill set.

“I think he’s running hard and I think he’s downhill,” Day said this week. “When he sees it, he’s rolling, and so the different schemes that we’re doing I think fit his style really well. And he may not be pretty, but he’s pouring them in there. And he’s practicing, there was a time in the spring and in the preseason he wasn’t practicing, so it’s hard to get better.”

Teague’s growth can almost be seen in real-time as he looks more and more like a gigantic piece of this Ohio State offensive puzzle every single week. He has already had a good amount of production on the field, but what got him there in the first place was his ability to take care of the football.

“He’s a great change-up to JK,” Day said. “He’s different. So, I think that matters in a game. But I think Master has done a good job taking care of the ball, that’s the first thing. Because as hard as he runs and as big as he is and all those things, if you don’t take care of the ball you can’t play running back here at Ohio State. So he’s taken care of the football. He gave it up a couple of weeks ago but that was it. For the most part he’s hung on to the ball.”

Despite being the #2 RB pretty much regulated to mop-up duty, Teague ranks 5th in the conference in rushing with 416 yards on 66 carries (6.3 ypc) and three TDs.

Our backup RB and starting QB have more rushing yards than Michigan's leading rusher (Charbonnet) :slappy:

Wait... what? Are you guys telling me Shea Patterson isn't going to run for 1,000 yards this season?
