RB Michael Weber (New Jersey Generals)

Sounds a bit like a certain running back we just sent to Dallas. No doubt having Zeke there for him in his redshirt year was critical in getting there.

There's a clip somewhere on the interwebs from BTN special they did of OSU fall camp where Zeke is mentoring Weber. They were specifically talking about blocking and how OSU backs pride themselves on it.

‘THEY’RE YOUR MONEY MAKERS’: INSIDE THE BOND BETWEEN MIKE WEBER AND OHIO STATE'S OFFENSIVE LINE

78526_h.jpg

Mike Weber saw the gifts his predecessor gave away. He wanted badly to do the same.

“I wish I had enough money to do that,” Ohio State’s running back joked Tuesday.

Former Buckeye and current Dallas Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott made headlines last week when he bought his offensive linemen John Deere utility vehicles for Christmas. Just a redshirt freshman at Ohio State, Weber obviously doesn’t have that type of budget, but the Detroit native said he wants to do something to thank the Buckeyes’ five starters up front.

“I’m working on it,” Weber said. “I’m thinking about dinner, but I’m trying to think of something crazy.”

This matters because a running back taking care of his offensive line is important. Weber can’t succeed in Ohio State’s system without Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Pat Elflein, Billy Price and Isaiah Prince in front of him the same way Elliott couldn’t without the five linemen he played with. There’s a certain element of chemistry needed, both on and off the field, for it to work.

For Weber, it didn’t always come easily. He sat behind Elliott last season, redshirted and fell into some bad habits. Many of his teammates said he had a lot of growing up to do if he was going to be a contributor in the immediate future.

But after Elliott left early for the NFL and it became clear Weber was going to be the bell cow running back for the Buckeyes in 2016, Elflein and Price took it upon themselves as the leaders of Ohio State’s offensive line to start building the trust required to make things work.

All throughout winter workouts and summer conditioning, Weber was paired with the two All-American offensive linemen — or quarterback J.T. Barrett — to make sure they were on the same page.

Mike is averaging 6.1 yards per carry. All he needs is to have an average game and be given the ball 15 times. JT is averaging 4.4 per carry. Give him 15 carries as well. Samuel is averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Give him 15 carries. Just on average isn't that about 265 yards rushing? If these guys just play an average game running the ball it will go a long way in securing a victory on Saturday night.

That average is based on all of our opponents (obviously) including some pretty bad defenses. So I would t expect us to hit our averages. We actually function well below our averages against a good defenses. That said our defense plays just as well against good offenses. I fully expect this game to be a defensive struggle and I think our d will win the day. Well probably be well below the o/u of 60.

Look at the comparison numbers I showed a while back. The clemson defense hasn't kept opponents offenses far off their average numbers at all.

Saw a recent interview where a subdued Weber said something about playing with aggression or similar. That's what we need in this game. For Mike to run with bad intentions.

Some interview quotes on O-Zone.....

Frustrated Mike Weber Confused by Lack of Carries

"It was really frustrating because that's not something I do is fumble the ball," he said after the game. "I'm not going to sit here and make excuses, the ball came out, they hit the ball at the right spot at the right time, its unfortunate but I try my best, gave my heart out for my team, and (now I'll) get ready for next year."
.
.
.
Sitting in front of his locker, Weber was asked why he only carried the ball five times.

"I don't control that, I don't call the plays, it is what it is," he said.

Was the game plan supposed to see him carry the ball so little?

"No, I didn't understand that," he said. "But like I said, I don't call the plays, that’s not up to me. The only thing I can do is just play my hardest every play."
.
.
.
"Sometimes you get things you don’t really expect, not just in football, but in life," he said in summation. "I think this tests us as men to respond.

"We know the feeling of losing like this now. I’m going to try my best to lead next year and make sure it doesn’t happen again."

His fumbles were bad but they were clearly caused by a young player trying to make the most of his carries.

Hey, let's not give any excuses for him here, it's the ball carrier's responsibility to hold on to the ball..period.

With that being said I remember another Ohio State running back fumbling 2 times in a game during his freshman year and he eventually turned out alright.

Really hoping he keeps his head up this offseason. Right now he's the key to the offense next year with JT uncertain and Samuel probably leaving. Retooled (hopefully) passing game will need a strong base run game to rely one while wrinkles are ironed out.

His first 'touch' was a easy pass that went right thru his hands.. and would have resulted in first down early in the game.. instead it was 4th down
couple that with putting it on the carpet twice...
and a coach might think it wasn't your day

Well then. You put in another back because running back isn't exactly a position you ignore for a whole freaking game.
