When Mike Weber walked off the field at AT&T Stadium following Ohio State's 24-7 win over USC in the Cotton Bowl, the Detroit native had tears in his eyes, and who could blame him?

The redshirt sophomore running back had been through perhaps more ups and downs than anyone on Ohio State's roster in 2017, and Weber was at a crossroads in his career after the Cotton Bowl came to a close. Would he leave Columbus for a career in the NFL, or would he return to Columbus, where he would have to compete with J.K. Dobbins for carries?

Ultimately, Weber chose to stay for his redshirt junior season after what he said was a positive conversation with Ohio State's coaching staff about what his role on the 2018 team would be.

"I heard what I needed to hear," Weber said Friday.

"It was 50-50 at that point," Weber continued when asked about whether he thought he was leaving on the field at the Cotton Bowl. "I really didn't know at that point. I really wanted to come back and finish what I started."

So what makes Weber confident that there will be enough carries to go around? Part of it has to do with who will be playing quarterback for the Buckeyes in 2018.

What I love is UFM talked with him about his touches for next season and he heard what he needed to hear.

We know Dobbins is getting his carries so that tells me they plan on giving the bulk of the carries other wise to Weber. Not the QB but to other 1k running back we have.

Personally, I believe Mike Weber is the best “all around” RB on this team. His return is huge.....much bigger than most realize.

We don’t have a JK Dobbins level recruit coming in this year (no offense to Snead) and Antonio Williams just isn’t the same caliber as Mike. When Weber is healthy, he’s as reliable as can be, and a chain mover. I think Mike has a great season next year, and plays a much more significant role than what most would otherwise expect.

Obviously there is a reason why Mike is ahead of Antonio on the depth chart, but the few times Antonio saw the field last year he was pretty solid. Actually, against some of our weaker opponents I wouldn't be too worried if Antonio was the starter. Back to Mike...

I also read it that Meyer was somewhat tipping his hand to the possible QB starter, and it doesn’t seem like a running QB...

I think Weber might be more complementary to a more pro style QB like Haskins. Very nitpicky with these two, but Weber seems to get up to speed more quickly. Dobbins and his shiftiness were invaluable with all the stacked boxes last year. I expect us to get alot more looks with 2 safeties deep and a light box with the arm talent at QB.

It Was a One-Armed Man

Mike Weber had a very frustrating and injury-filled season last year. A sketchy hamstring helped limit him to just seven carries in the Buckeyes’ first four games.

Once the hamstring started feeling better, Weber then injured his wrist, and then had to deal with that for the rest of the season.

“I hurt it, I think the Nebraska game. I just played through it,” he said. “There’s a few ligaments in there that aren’t together.”

How did it affect him?

“I couldn’t use it,” he said. “I basically was playing with one hand. It got better as the season went along. What really helped me was the bowl season. We had that long break and it helped me a lot.”

Weber will enter the spring with a healthy wrist and healthy hamstrings, and it will be the first time he’s been completely healthy in a camp since last spring.

I think it's just a sound career decision. This NFL draft is loaded at RB... and Weber didn't put up the flashy numbers battling injury, JK takeover, and JT getting so many carries.
Not guaranteed he'll get 1k this year either... but he should feature more, be at his best when he does, less NFL draft competition, and less questions about health (knock on wood), and have a 3rd productive year ... and get some more gold pants along the way.

Disagree. Pretty much every draft will have a number of RBs drafted, and pretty much all will be most likely ahead of Weber. He didn't last year, and barring injury he won't put up flashy numbers this year. At best, we can hope that OSU uses Dobbins and Weber like Chubb and Michel this past year at UGA or Williams and Brown at Auburn some years back. But I more than likely see a 70/30 split between Dobbins and Weber, they're not seen as equals like the previous tandems. A productive year, if Dobbins is healthy as well means 500-600yds for Weber. That may barely get him drafted unless he knocks the combine out of the park. I can name at least 8-10 RBs more coveted than Weber in CFB, all that will be draft eligible next year, and are more enticing because they're actually starting at their schools. IMO, Weber should've left this year, as his stock isn't going to get much higher seeing as that he'll have another year as a backup. The major bright side he has though is that he'll enter the NFL with less wear and tear than most of the other 1st year RBs, but he'll need to be drafted into a platoon setting.

Mike Weber Asked for Larger Role, Expects to Make Most of It

Last season wasn’t what Mike Weber envisioned for himself. A hamstring injury slowed his start and stunted his progress. He was forced to give way to freshman J.K. Dobbins and was never able to reclaim his spot.

He still finished 14th in the Big Ten in rushing (626 yards) and 10th in scoring among non-kickers.

But even when he was healthy there were times when he appeared to be an afterthought in Ohio State’s plans. Dobbins got the bulk of the running back carries, which is understandable, but Weber’s touches were tertiary to quarterback J.T. Barrett’s secondary — and sometimes primary — carries.

Only four times in the 12 games that Weber played in last season did he have more carries than Barrett. The Buckeyes won those games by an average score of 56-10, so there was no need for Urban Meyer to get overly reliant on Barrett’s legs.

Nowhere was Weber’s lack of carries more noticeable than in the postseason. He carried the ball just four times against the Badgers in the Big Ten Championship Game and five times in the Cotton Bowl. Barrett, meanwhile, ran the ball 19 times (with a bum leg) on the Badgers and 16 times in the Bowl game.

Any frustration with his role last season would be understandable, and there were people who thought that frustration might lead him to leave early for the NFL.

Ultimately, however, he decided to return, saying that the coaches told him what he wanted to hear.

Despite a desire for more touches, Weber’s goals are team oriented.

“Really just get a Big Ten Championship,” he said this spring. “All of the championships and be successful. Get a national championship and reach my personal goals with yards and catches and touchdowns, and stuff like that.”

What kind of numbers are we talking about for his personal goals?

“I want at least 1,300 yards or higher and over 15 touchdowns,” he said. “That’s the goal for me.”
