Smith carried eight times for 32 yards and caught one of two targets for an additional six yards during Thursday's preseason opener against the 49ers.

With Dak Prescott under center on the opening drive, Smith gashed the defense for 15 yards on his initial carry and chipped away as the unit moved down the field en route to the end zone. He didn't enjoy the same level of success after some of the other backups began to enter the game, but his contribution with the first unit was notable. Rookie Bo Scarbrough generated 52 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, but he'll likely be in the mix for the scraps left over behind Ezekiel Elliott and Smith once the regular season begins.

He's still earning a living playing football (i.e. around $2M over 4 years so far); however, he's an an UFA in 2019. Hope the Cowboys resign him.

Report: Bengals held workout for ex-Cowboys RB Rod Smith

Rod Smith may have a new NFL home soon.

The longtime backup running back for the Dallas Cowboys hasn't been contacted for a possible return to North Texas following the expiration of his contract in 2019, with the club looking at testing their hand at the position yet again in the NFL Draft. They selected Darius Jackson in the sixth round of the 2016 draft with the goal of having him challenge for RB2 behind their fourth-overall pick that season, Ezekiel Elliott, but things didn't work out that way. Jackson has since been on a roster carousel of sorts for the Cowboys, although he was impressive enough in 2018 training camp to force rookie Bo Scarbrough out of the picture.

Neither could unseat Smith, however, but the Cowboys will let the 27-year-old wander to other pastures after nearly four years of service. It appears his talents may be heading to the Midwest if a recent report holds true, with Smith having visited the Cincinnati Bengals just over one week prior to the draft — according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Former Ohio State running back Rod Smith appeared in three games each for both the Tennessee Titans and Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders last season but did not have any rushing attempts. Like Coleman, he isn’t likely to have an early market or receive a guaranteed contract, but a wait could ultimately benefit him as it could enable him to find a team with limited running back depth where he’ll have a chance to compete his way onto a 53-man roster.
