RB Ron Springs (R.I.P.)

So moving this to the OSU Alumni Forum would probably be a good idea, eh?

Anyway. I can't read the article, because ESPN is blocked at work. Based on the the title of the thread, I would like to second Steve19's sentiment. What a great friend.

Brown's SportingBlog A friend in need finds out who his friends are, indeed
December 14, 2006

Former Dallas Cowboys teammates Everson Walls and Ron Springs are fully aware that being in the public spotlight is a constant, as a current and former NFL player. However that which became public recently they would have prefered remain private. Springs has been battling diabetes for 14 years, has lost his right foot to the disease and is in need of a healthy kidney. The old running back steadfastly refused to allow his son, Redskins defensive back Shaun Springs who wanted to be the donor, to be tested as a match. In steps Walls, who has just been tested and might be a compatible donor. Unlike some who can't bear to see Ron's current physical condition, Walls is a regular visitor and truly has proven to be a friend for life.

that is especially kind of you to post, mooktarr. although, i am not receiving but instead scheduled to donate a kidney. starting from early summer, i've had numerous evaluations administered by the specialists at stony brook hospital on long island. they've poked, prodded, and drained me. all the tests have been positive, which has been nice to find out. certainly and at the very least, it has so far been an interesting process.

if the surgery ends up happening, it will be the first non-directed kidney donation performed at the hospital, which handles a great number of transplants. right now, i don't know who would receive the kidney. there is a short list of about 2 or 3, but, of course, they need to be tested for compatibility. i'll likely find out late winter to early spring whom they decide to receive it. i have the choice of deciding, but i want no part of that.

again, it's been a great learning experience to say the least, which is why i'm interested in reading about the situations of others. i am looking forward to the spring and am hoping that the green lights continue.

Ex-Cowboy Walls gives kidney to former teammate

Associated Press

DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs was recovering Thursday after receiving a kidney donated by former teammate Everson Walls.

The transplant operation was performed Wednesday at Medical City Hospital in Dallas.
A news conference was being planned for Friday on the transplant, which officials believe is the first time former U.S. professional sports teammates have shared an organ.
The only other documented cases involving former pro athletes as donors include Greg Ostertag giving a kidney to his sister in 2002 when he was playing for the Utah Jazz, and basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson donating a kidney to his daughter in 1997. Basketball players Alonzo Mourning and Sean Elliott are among pro athletes who have received an organ.
Springs, 50, has suffered from diabetes for 16 years and has been on the national transplant waiting list since 2004. The disease has led to the amputation of his right foot and the big and middle toes on his left foot, and caused his hands to curl into knots. He also was forced into a wheelchair and needed dialysis three times a week.
