LB Steele Chambers (Official Thread)

RB: STEELE CHAMBERS

Chambers isn’t as under-the-radar as he would have been before Master Teague got injured this spring, as that put the spotlight on him as Ohio State’s only healthy scholarship running back at the time. But Chambers lost his chance to really take advantage of that opportunity when the Buckeyes’ final 12 spring practices were canceled, and the spotlight quickly shifted to Trey Sermon when Sermon announced his transfer to Ohio State from Oklahoma.

Sermon will likely sit atop the Buckeyes’ running back depth chart when they return to the practice field, and Teague and Marcus Crowley could potentially be ahead of Chambers in the running back pecking order too if they have recovered from their injuries. But Sermon has never practiced in an Ohio State uniform, and Teague (Achilles) and Crowley (ACL) are both coming back from serious injuries. Chambers still has a very real chance to earn a substantial role in Ohio State’s running back rotation this season, and if he can do that, he could be a key contributor in the Buckeyes’ offense for years to come.

Fifth-year senior Demario McCall is also a sleeper candidate to make an impact at running back this year, potentially in a situational capacity as a passing-down back, but he began the spring practicing at slot receiver.

Both had a learning curve out of high school. And there was nobody better to learn from than J.K. Dobbins, who rushed for 2,000 yards a season ago and certainly set the bar high for future Ohio State tailbacks. Both backs can use Dobbins as an example.

Just watching how they prepare for every game, for every practice, all the film they watch, how they take care of their bodies,” Chambers told Lettermen Row. “It’s given me blueprints of how to be great in this program.”

Dude should he start?

Just sayin': I'm not privy to how Chambers performs in practice; however, I'll say no. The rushing breakdown was

1) Fields: 15 carries, 54 yards
2) Teague: 12 carries, 41 yards
3) Serman: 11 carries, 48 yards
4) Chambers: 4 carries, 32 yards

I will say (ideally) Fields should have fewer carries to protect him from injuries (i.e. keep him from taking unnecessary hits) and possibly Chambers could work into the RB rotation a little sooner/more. With that being said all 3 RBs need to run with more "authority"; it appeared to me that the coaches were calling QB sneaks on some short yardage plays 'cause the RBs just were not "cutting it". In addition, another issue that lead to a sub par RB performance in the game was the OL blocking wasn't (constantly) opening up the holes that you would expect from a "dominate offensive line".

Chambers wasn't exactly getting his carries against 1s in a contested game. I'm happy for Steele, but maybe time to pump the breaks on the running game

That is where I'm at...Chambers looked nice, but I don't think he is breaking those runs when Master or Sermon got the ball. Just one game but the gap from JK is maybe bigger than I thought.

Strictly eye test, removing the fact that Steele got his Carrie's at the beginning of the 2nd half and that Nebraska's Defense may have had some wear and tear or even the fact that the offensive line make have just so happened to block a little better when Steele got into the game...off of eye test only he looked to show the most burst hitting the holes the best vision recognizing the hole and the most fight once contact had been made, I like Teague as a player and even more as a human but the last thing I'm going to do is make excuses for him and why while he is a great kid and serviceable there may be a better all around option on the team Steele even seemed more sharp and capable in his blocking keys... Also Trey seemed to look better in the second half so he might be the type of back who needs reps to catch a groove

If I had to rate what I saw yesterday it would be:

1. Chambers
2. Sermon
3. Johnson
4. Teague

I have to agree with this list however I tend to think your comment about Sermon warming up is true and also, within the offense as a whole. That was his first game. I definitely think Chambers take take some of MTs reps if yesterday type games continue.

Chambers was a pleasant surprised, but it's hard to jump to conclusions one game in. Teague can be a very valuable RB at times in games, even if he never has the wiggle to dice up defenses. Don't think people should discount him yet.

I'll be interested in seeing if Sermon gets more carries next week.
