RB/WR/DB Demario McCall (Official Thread)

“VERY FRUSTRATING.” We're four seasons into Demario McCall's Heisman campaign and I still have no idea what position he plays or how the hell a guy who averages 7.6 yards a touch is even going to get on the field.

That's been noticeably frustrating for me, so I can only imagine how he's been feeling.

Ohio State's offense is doing just fine doing whatever it's been doing the past two years, so it's tough to be too critical, but I just refuse to believe there isn't a place for a guy like McCall somewhere in the offense. Make him a wheel route specialist – I don't know.

It's just at this point, it feels like he's already missed out on years of development just aimlessly bouncing around, so someone's gotta figure out something soon.

Victim of getting recruited over, as well as being recruited for an offensive system that is no longer in place. McCall would've been the perfect compliment to Curtis Samuel, but now hes a guy who doesn't fit into the RB or WR rotation, and now it looks like Garrett Wilson has taken over as the lead returner. Which was supposed to be Demario's niche. Idk where this guy fits anymore on this team

DEMARIO FINALLY PLAYS ON OFFENSE, AND FLASHES
The hype that’s surrounded Demario McCall for years has largely stemmed from his performances against Rutgers in 2016 and 2017. Against the Scarlet Knights as a true freshman, McCall had 10 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. One year later, McCall had 11 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 35-yard pass for a touchdown in a 56-0 win at Rutgers.

Those early breakthrough performances still haven’t materialized into a regular role on Ohio State’s offense, and at this point, it seems unlikely that role is ever going to come. But in a two-play span on Saturday night, McCall showed why he’s still a player some Buckeyes fans would like to see on the field more.

On his very first offensive play of the season, McCall took a carry from the running back spot for a 12-yard gain. One play later, McCall turned a screen pass from Justin Fields into a 27-yard gain.

Those were McCall’s only offensive touches of the night, as he still looks to be behind Master Teague, Trey Sermon and Steele Chambers at running back while Garrett Wilson is taking most of the snaps at slot receiver. But he certainly made a positive impression with the touches he did get, which just maybe could give the Buckeyes reason to think about getting him more involved in the offense, especially since they haven’t gotten a lot of flashy plays out of their running backs so far this season.

Demario McCall gained 39 yards on just two offensive touches in Saturday's game.

I’m a big fan of McCall in the sense he brings a unique skill set.

My only concern at this point, is when he’s in the game, the antennae’s are up.....I’d like to see him get more snaps with some boring ass plays just to dial down the obvious nature of him being in game.

I love Demario tho.....kid bleeds OSU and has patiently waited his turn that never really came. But when he’s in, there’s a certain level of excitement I get that something cool is about to happen.

Anyways, good on Demario. In a way, he can turn what’s happened into a positive. I actually think he has a chance at NFL, and his lack of hits/injuries give him an edge most college RB’s don’t have. It’s weird......I see him being a productive NFL 3rd down back in NFL, when he barely saw field at OSU because we rarely sub out RB’s in middle of drives.

There’s some nuance here that NFL GM’s see, that most fans won’t understand.

Word on the street is that Demario was the player who posted the Coach Day speech saying we're going to beat Clemsons bleepity bleep. If true, that's not a good look at all! Breaking the bond of what's said in the locker is a major no no and shows immense immaturity... if it's true

It is true. Luckily for McCall the NCAA granted another year, as he would seem wise to take the lessons taught from our strong coaching staff to another school with a weaker depth chart to find out if he can shine.

Returning for what seems like his 10th. I'm conflicted on this, part of me is happy that he returns, but I also wonder where he fits and he's taking a roster spot away from a younger player. Welcome back though Demario...

To say McCall faces an uphill battle to earn playing time on defense would be an understatement, even with the uncertainty about who’ll play at cornerback this year.

Day, for his part, sounded downright optimistic about McCall on defense.

“He's been building and learning. It takes time to change positions like that,” Day said. “I know he's kind of done some different things for us on offense, but this is a huge opportunity for him. Kind of playing in that nickel spot right there is something that he's shown some good flashes early on. Now, he's got to keep learning, but he's got a great offseason – probably the best offseason he's had. Tremendous kind of feedback from Mick (Marotti) and strength and conditioning. We're excited about it. He's shown good leadership as an upperclassman. We're going to find out through the end of spring if this is something that's real. All indications early on is that he's going to be able to help us on the defensive side.”

Might be time to change thread to CB. Olave schooled him on the catch over the top, but in focusing on him, he seemed to be in decent position most of the spring game. If McCall ends up getting significant time at CB this year, I can’t say that makes me super confident about the talent in the pipeline, but good luck to him on the switch. I hope it’s a successful position change.

Maybe just change the thread to ATH...

Dmac getting beat by Olave on a 50-50 ball doesn't cause me a whole lot of heartburn. One of them could be getting drafted later this month and the other has played his position for ...what... 4 weeks?

Agreed. I was actually highly impressed with DMC on that play.

The receiver (Olave) was not wide open, like the Alabama receivers were. We had a player within 2 feet.

Olave did not run by DMC, like he does most of the B1G.

DMC was turned around looking for the ball, which is always appreciated by tOSU fans. I "think" DMC got a little bit off balance or he would have jumped too?????

Basically DMC made Olave make a play that many are raving about (forcing him to jump up over).

Now the ball may have been slightly underthrown, making much of the above chatter worthless ...
