Real Racing, Formula One, F1 (official thread)

Sitting in SFO international airport watching F1, it's a replay, but it's still weird to me... when did F1 become a thing here in the states?

I'm not sure F1 actually ever became a "thing" in the US. I think they have always had a small (but loyal) following. It may have picked up a little during (shorty after) the turn of the century. In the late 1990s when CHAMP and IRL split the product of both groups were watered down. and maybe some open wheel racing fans gravitated to F1. And between 2000 - 2007 when there was a F1 race at Indianapolis; however, these are just a guesses. Also, it is interesting to note that Wikipedia estimates that the TV audiences for F1 races are around 300 million per race. In contrast, the final ratings for the 2014 Super Bowl which ended up being the biggest to date had 112.2 million viewers. It was the most watched Super Bowl and the most watched program in U.S. television history.

I've always said that the 2 biggest sports in the world are soccer and F1; and the average American can't name a player (or driver) in either sport. And yeah, I know F1 is probably not considered a sport by most people. I think it is technically considered a "Motorsport".

F-1's Michael Schumacher leaves hospital after skiing accident

Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher is leaving a Lausanne hospital and returning home to continue his rehab more than nine months after suffering a life-threatening skiing accident.

He had spent the past three months in Lausanne, Switzerland after initially being held at a hospital in Grenoble. His family lives in Gland, near Lake Geneva.

Schumacher was hospitalized in late December and kept in a medically induced coma after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in the Swiss Alps. He underwent two brain surgeries before doctors put him in the coma to keep the swelling to a minimum.

That is great. Remarkable story.

Re: His manager said that the seven-time racing champion still faced "a long and difficult road ahead."
"Michael's rehabilitation will continue from now on from home. Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months," Sabine Kehm said. "There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead. ... We ask the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculaton about his state of health be avoided."

Just sayin': You still have to wonder how much mental (brain) and/or physical damage he has: and what "quality" of life he has to look forward to.

Rather boring Grand Prix. Would have liked to see Red Bull roll the dice on a two stopper for Max and see if they could have put pressure on the Mercs.

But yeah, Lewis is in a class all his own. He’s amazing. Unfortunately, makes for uninteresting racing.

Hamilton himself has said as much. He's openly wished for Red Bull or Ferrari to step up their game and push him. Hopefully (from my perspective) it'll be McLaren next year.

As for this morning's race at Spa, I was hoping for much more. In terms of passing and lead changes, it's arguably the most open track in F1. Instead, it ended up being like a modern Monaco Grand Prix--pole winner is the automatic race winner unless his car breaks down.

McLaren is very interesting. Seidl seems to be the real deal as a team principle, and going to the Merc power unit next year could see them jump into the top 3. I just don’t see anyone coming close to Mercedes though until the new regulations go into effect in 2022.

I wonder if Sainz is having second thoughts about going to the Scuderia? That Ferrari power unit is toast, and the frozen engine regs for 2021 mean it isn’t going to get any better next year. For a team with all the resources and history, who should be giving Mercedes a hell of a fight, Ferrari have become a joke.

I'm not crazy about Sainz in any event. I think Riccardo is going to be a huge improvement, and I think he'll be a great mentor for Lando. Last year, I thought that Lando was every bit the "next great driver" that LeClerc was but that LeClerc simply benefited from a better car and the Ferrari hype machine. This year, I'm cautiously optimistic that I might have been onto something.

This is turning into a real shitshow, and the billionaire's boy might just end up backing his dumb ass into a win.
Not often the Mercs make a mistake such as they just did. Stroll gets a free pit stop out of this and is in the prime spot to win this race. Incredible.

I’m hoping the McLaren’s can make a move and Bottas can make a run to close up some of the gap with Lewis.

Billionaire Boy and his cheating car daddy bought him shouldn't even be in the field.
