The news articles are taking on a new look. The listing is now sorted by date, not by sport. That should make things less cluttered. It will also help me to keep a running archive of old articles in another post in this thread. There is now a colored "bullet" and a 2 letter abbreviation at the end of each link. These show what type of article each link is about (football, basketball, etc). There is also a "Legend" at the end that explains each abbreviation and colored bullet. That should make it easy to determine what an article is about if the title isn't clear. It should also make it easy to scan (visually) for the type of articles you want to read. Any questions or suggestions would be appreciated (send me a PM) - 3yards

I'm game. I've been starting to do just that (plug in stories) on the football board anyway. Let me know what you need done.

I'll add you as a mod to this forum. You can just edit my post as you see fit. Alternatively, you can just copy what's there, start your own with whatever you want to use as a base, and just update that as you go. Let me know.

Looking at different ways to automate this process, but no matter what solution I end up on, someone (or a group of us) will have to assign articles to specific sports and/or players when applicable for insertion in the stats engine and forum. Just a heads up.

3yards, I'll keep adding items here and there myself. Obviously I went a little nutty today and yesterday, lol, but there's a ton of news out there which is great for the offseason. I'm not aware of another site that consolidates news links, so perhaps people will get some use out of this.

Good stuff Clarity. I've been a bit busy the past few days, but will be adding more stuff soon ... probably tonight. I like the front page changes and the extra room for article links. Also, I've been working on a fairly comprehensive list of links. I'll post it on the board soon in a thread and ask for any other links that the membership feels should be listed. Any thoughts to a links page or possibly a sub forum or locked/tacked thread?

EDIT: How long do you think an article should stay on the list? Should we limit it to a certain number/threshhold or time/date? Are there space constrains we are dealing with? Etc.

I figure a week? But it's already getting unruly. I'm thinking about breaking out the news to the different sports forums and just doing 2 days worth on the front page. Although we might be better suited continuing as is on the front page, and letting the automation worry about better organization..

Is anyone actually checking the front page for new news items? If this is wasted effort, we can definitely stop.

I check the front page, sometimes it's all I have time for. I don't log in, but go in as a guest from work or a library to see if there's anything to check out in depth when I can get to a computer at home.
I really like the new layout, it helps with the navigation quite a bit. When you first mentioned the coming changes, I almost took it as a threat, but this is great!
I have some links that you may be interested in (you probably know of most of them) but don't know how or where to put them.

For anybody who is interested in reading what Dr. Holbrook thinks the role of athletics is in academia, there is an article written by Dr. Holbrook that appears in the Winter, 2004 edition of The Presidency. The title of the article is Jumping THrough the Hoops: Can Athletics Enhance the Academic Mission? Here is a link to an excerpt from the article: Jumping Through the Hoops

Just thought I'd keep a running archive of posted articles. That way when someone says, "where's that article that was posted 1 month ago", they can peruse the list to find it. If it ends up taking too much space we'll just delete it. - 3yards

Love the changes 3yards. At some point, why don't you start a new thread in this forum with the news (just so it's showing as yours on the front page), and we'll move this one over to the Archive forum.

Thanks Clarity. A Couple of questions.

1 If I make a new post to be displayed as the news article on the front page, CAN I make it so my avatar DOESN'T show? It just uses up too much space and makes the entries/links "wrap"

2 Is there a different font (or maybe a narrow font) we can use to keep the majority of entries/links from wrapping? It's not a big issue, but the wrapped lines make the entries/articles harder to sort through. Again, not a big deal.

I've wondered about #1 myself. It's somewhere in the hard code for the front page. I'll take a look at it some time over the next few days and see if there's a clean way to remove that. In the meantime, no harm done with us moving over to a new thread you start, as we both have avatars.

As far as fonts, there are about a dozen built into the board, in terms of something narrow, you might try one of the following;

Sample headline to demonstrate width <- Default Font
Sample headline to demonstrate width <- Impact
Sample headline to demonstrate width <- Arial Narrow

There are a few others in there that might fit the bill, play around a bit and see what you think. Just don't forget that the page is fluid. Meaning if you see it at 1024x768 (what I'll call the 'standard' resolution these days), things won't wrap for you that a user at 800x600 might get. And while I hope no one is at 640x480 anymore, I know some must be, so they're going to see even more wrap. There's no way around it really. General rule of thumb is still to 'think' a website around 800x600 or 1024x768. If you can get it to not wrap at one or both of those, you're in good shape. My desktop is 1600x1200, my laptop 1920x1200, but I keep browsers windowed somewhere between those two 'main' resolutions as that's how most sites intend you to see the content.

Anyway, play with it as you see fit, run with whatever you like. Ideally, the content management system ("stats engine") will suck articles in on its own, it will then be up to someone just assigning them to the appropriate sports and/or players for proper filing in the database, hit submit, and it will do the rest on its own.

Woah! Arial Narrow MIGHT work, but Impact looks horrible when in Bold face. The standard typestyle is still the most legible. I'll stick with it for now.

If your archive post is Arial Narrow, I think that's entirely readable and much smaller. And I'm at a very high resolution, which is to say I see it smaller than most people do.

Up to you though. I tossed a little HTML in to throw a border around the Legend (in the main post, not the archive). If you liked it the other way, feel free to toss it back as it was.

Also, you can/should remove the following HTML tags if you want to use Arial Narrow (I'd probably leave it for the legend);

HTML:
<span class="smallfont">ALL YOUR NEWS ITEMS</span>

Those are further compressing the text down, which is why the 'normal' font in the newsbits looks smaller than it does in our posts. Without that, and with Arial Narrow, the text will be marginally larger, but still more compressed with the normal font in 'smallfont' mode.
