Christopher Spartz

Christopher Spartz, an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Ambrose, was hired Monday as the recruiting coordinator and assistant director of basketball operations at Ohio State.

Spartz will join coach Thad Matta's staff after spending the past two seasons on the Fighting Bees' staff.

A Western Springs, Ill., native, Spartz played basketball at St. Ambrose and later toured professionally as a member of the Washington Generals, the perennial foe of the Harlem Globetrotters.

He joined the staff of his college coach, Ray Shovlain, prior to the 2011-12 season which saw the Fighting Bees qualify for the NAIA Division II national tourney.

For those of you wondering St. Ambrose is an NAIA school located in Davenport Iowa. I had to Google that. I wonder what the connection Matta had with the HC at St. Ambrose.

Basketball's Mark Pantoni? Chris Spartz doesn't think so, but has great vision for Buckeyes' recruiting: Ohio State basketball preview
By Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Christopher Spartz sat in the newly renovated practice facility at Value City Arena that still reeked of fresh paint, looking up at the walls that listed a seemingly endless list of Ohio State basketball championships.

His eyes were wide in amazement, as if it couldn’t be real life that he is the newest member of Thad Matta’s staff, which is responsible for many of those championships.

Already two months into his job as Ohio State’s recruiting and operations coordinator, Spartz still had the enthusiasm of a child about to blowout their birthday candles, only his wish had already come true.

“I’m all smiles, man,” Spartz said, as if that wasn’t already apparent. “A lot of people are out to prove people wrong. I live every day working my job to prove them right. This is the coolest opportunity I could have at this point in my life, and (Matta) didn’t get it wrong. You got it right. That’s where I am at.”
