I just finished up the story mode of RDR2 today, and because I am an awesome/terrible dad I played the entire game through with my 9 year old daughter - with her almost-7 sister mostly following along - and that made this one of the most amazing game experiences of my life. (To be clear, I spent my solo/post-bedtime hours noodling around on side missions and challenges and treasure maps and such, but we did the entire main story and epilogue together.)

So (of course) I understand this game is NOT appropriate for kids in some ways: it's true that the bad language is just constant, and there's all the shootin and stabbin and so much blood... BUT! Considering we've been through the Marvels and Star Warses and Harry Potters, the violence here is not really so crazy, and my kids seem able to understand that they shouldn't talk like these old-timey outlaws. Also the smoking/alcohol stuff is pretty easy to compartmentalize as a part of that era. So this is not a Grand Theft Auto type game at all.

And once we accepted all that as part of the experience, we really went on a journey. Halfway through, my daughter got a few new fish, and she named two of them Dutch and Arthur, but a couple weeks later she was pretty conflicted about Dutch. (We also made a Lego version of Valentine, among other RDR-inspired play.) I read that the main story can end differently depending on how you have played, and so we were really gratified to have intentionally played Arthur as a virtuous character. This game actually sent some pretty positive messages about about moralistic behavior, and I know that my girls will fondly remember Arthur, John, Sadie, Abigail, Charles, Hosea, even Dutch.

And really, wow, the music. Every time something momentous happened, there was just the right context-appropriate song to help you really feel it. It may have gotten a bit dusty here a few times for ol' dad.

And since it sets up the next story so well, I think next we will see if the PS3 still works to continue on to RDR1.

You won’t be disappointed in RDR 1. One of my favorite stories I’ve ever played through. Played through once on Xbox360 and once on Xbox One.

As for the context-appropriate music, RDR1 provides one of the best segway songs at an absolutely perfect time.

The lack of choice in the overall storyline is my biggest complaint, but overall the character development of Arthur is phenomenal. The music is remarkable (something too many games have skimped on lately).

Great game.

P.s. I'm trying to imagine leaving town with Micah the first time with young kids in tow.

Is that when you break Micah out of jail and then take out a bunch of lawmen on the way out of town? Great mission. I think that was actually right around when my daughter started getting really into the game.

I mean, I had zero intention of sharing this particular gaming experience with my little sweetheart, but it's such an addictive game that I had trouble confining myself to just playing after "bedtime" and so inevitably she starts watching over my shoulder, then riding around on the horse for some open-world exploring, then taking on a side mission here and there, and eventually she's playing through and only handing it off to dad for the biggest shoot-em-up sequences. She really got into the story and all the characters and the consequences of their actions.

So it was an incredibly rewarding shared experience and a great introduction to such a rich genre. We went on to watch "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" and found that it hit a lot of the same beats as RDR2, and now we've got "The Old/Wild West" as this big new area for imaginative exploration. We were at the old fort on Tom Sawyer's island at Disney World over spring break, and they just run in like "Yes! RDR in real life!" ... I just ask that they don't talk about it too much with the grandmas.

Were they lawmen? Because I'm pretty sure it was the entire population of non-field workers. Fortunately enough child and adult labor took place far from home to replenish the population after my massacre.
