I decided to pre-order at the last minute so I could start playing immediately and get the little bonus item that Gamestop was including (Downloadable outfit to increase Dead Eye use). Played for a few hours last night before I reluctantly decided I needed at least 5 hours of sleep for work today. Gonna be very engrossed in this game, I can tell :)

Went to chase down a bounty last night, took out 4 of his buddies, then noticed that the bounty was taking off. I hadn't realized that he had stashed a horse behind the house, and when I tried to follow him on foot using my map, he got away :( Ran into quite a few interesting random encounters last night, one guy road up to me and asked for help, his friend was being hanged for no reason. Get there, shoot 4 or 5 guys, and the guy still dies. I also ran into this crazy old broad that was waiting at a burnt out church for her fiance to show....won't spoil that one heh. I did, however, save a treasure hunter from being assaulted by 2 thieves, so I got to play hero in the end.

Saddest part of the night was just before I turned off the game. I lassoed my first wild stallion and broke it as part of a quest. I got to keep the horse for my own. As I was riding the horse back to town I obviously wasn't paying attention (I blame the fact it was 4AM) because I walked the horse off a cliff. Horse rolled and was dead as a doornail, I barely survived using the horse to break my fall. I then skinned the beast, taking the horse hair and meat into town. It was a loooong walk back into town though, this map is decent in size. I didn't have that horse for more than 2 minutes :sad2:

Forgot, I believe my PS3 tag is ulukinatme, same as BP

I didn't realize it was coming out so soon.

I will pick it up between work and class. I took the next three days off to study for a comprehensive exam that determines if I get my graduate degree or not... this could be bad.

Or it could be epic.

:)

Damned video games have haunted me my entire collegiate career.

You do realize you can just whistle for another horse when yours dies right? No need to walk. At least that is how it worked out for me. I got attacked by wolves. I tried to kill them, but in the mean time they killed my horse. I skinned him, and then whistled for another one. Sure enough, another came a running.

As for my overall impression (I play on XBox360).....The voice acting is good. The graphics are ok. I heard good reviews about the graphics, but I am somewhat spoiled. I have a computer that can play any game with the graphics maxed out in 1920x1200 resolution (yes, even Crysis). It makes XBox 360 games look terrible. So I have to take that with a grain of salt. As for the gameplay, it is very similar to GTA4. I read a review that says people will say that, and no doubt, it feels like a GTA game set in the Wild West. It's not difficult as long as you use cover and Bullet Time, er, I mean Dead Eye. Overall it's a really good game so far, but not to the level of greatness some reviewers seem to think. Perhaps multiplayer will ramp it up for me, but so far it's just a really good game. I recommend it, but it's not anything revolutionary.

Yeah, I found out about the whistle thing after the fact :( Oh well. On the other hand, your new horse does not appear to be the one you previously had. I had a similar problem where coyotes took out the new stallion I had tamed. When I whistled for a new horse (Had to wait a minute for it to show, which may be why I ran back to town before), and it was a different color than my previous horse. It also appeared slower, but I'm not sure theres a way to tell. I noticed you could buy new horses and I bought a new Medium speed brown one. After you buy it however, the shop keep says it's no longer available. I'm curious...if this one dies, will I never be able to buy that one again?

As far as reviews and your impressions, I feel the same. The landscape graphics are pretty nice imo, but the characters feel like they could have been more detailed. Gameplay wise I think the game is pretty good. Earth shattering? Maybe not, this new Red Dead installment definitly feels more GTA, but better. I thought GTA IV was a step backwards in the series, Red Dead is already more enjoyable for me. Love the music, the atmosphere, the spaghetti western style characters. I think the thing that makes this game stand out is the random encounters. No matter how distracting it can be from your current quest, I love stopping for a second to help people being attacked by coyotes, stopping a stage coach robbery, catching escaped criminals, coming across a random campsite with travelers unwittingly telling you your own tales, etc. This kind of stuff adds flavor, and I'm eating it up. I find it interesting that in some of these random encounters you're left to decide who to support, and many times with no color coding to tell you who may be good and who is bad. Theres been a few encounters with gunfire where I had to pick, I picked the underdog, and I unwittingly helped a bandit. Besides the endless encounters, I love the bounty hunting.

I think theres a few disappointing things, one may be that the game could be too short. I'm already 25% of the way complete according to the game and I've only played it for 1 1/2 evenings. I have no idea how far I really am from the end, but that % is scaring me. The other disapointment is the map size. I heard people raving that the map is so large it takes you 30 minutes to travel from the bottom most point to the top. Sure, this may be true, but you will also be traversing mountains between point A and point B. In reality, to travel across half the map in most cases it takes maybe 5 minutes or less on the average horse. The only other nagging thing for me is switching weapons. So annoying sitting there like an idiot while switching weapons with the L menu and people are firing, although I found that you can switch weapons from the pause menu (Just seems like a waste of time). Would be nice if they paused combat for a second when on the L weapons menu too.

Overall I'm very pleased with the game, and I'm very engrossed in it. I think the multi-player could be very good when you saddle up with a posse to do things together. That could be where most of the fun is, I haven't gone beyond the lobby in the multi-player setting yet.

Anyone know if there is a chance this game comes out for the Wii? I've tried a few google searches but I'm pretty limited at work.

As of right now I don't think there are any plans to release it for Wii. They never released GTA IV for the Wii to my knowledge, so I doubt they'll do anything different for this.

The game is supposedly 20 hours. I am not sure how much of that includes side quests, but I read that in one review.

As for random encounters, I too have killed the good guys by accident (I am trying to play through the first time on high honor). I think we had the same encounter. There were two guys running after one guy while shooting. So of course I kill the guys shooting. Turns out they were going after an outlaw. So I just shot him too.

As for your horse, when you buy one you are given a deed to that style of horse. That deed allows you to get another horse of that type for free. Not sure about whistling for one though. As for wild stallions, I believe once they die you don't get another one (unless you capture another one in the wild). I just want my War Horse (free on XBox360 versions from Best Buy). I tried typing in the code yesterday but it couldn't connect to the Rockstar servers.

Question related to interaction. I am a big fan of the Jedi Knight games where you can make your own lightsaber and choose to be a good jedi or follow the Darkside.

If you choose Darkside, other characters cower as you approach or run away. The opposite happens if you choose to be honorable. It's a little thing - but it was a neat touch.

Is this similar to RDR?
