Pitching a priority for Baker's Reds
Cincy hopes to provide new manager with quality hurlers
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- Even with Dusty Baker and his winning track record on board as Reds manager, he can't expect to win without pitching.

Like several clubs in the Major Leagues, Cincinnati lacks pitching depth in both its rotation and bullpen. Consequently, its fans have lacked watching a contender for many of the past few seasons. Good arms have become increasingly difficult to acquire, especially on the free-agent market these days.

Really sad news for me. RIP Joe, you will be missed. My thoughts go out to the family. Enquirer link

Hamilton native Joe Nuxhall, who as a 15-year-old in 1944 made history by pitching for the Reds and later became a fixture in the Reds radio booth, died at 10:55 p.m. Thursday night at Mercy Hospital-Fairfield. He was 79.

At any rate, for what it's worth, a simple thanks to Nuxhall, for doing so much to infuse my life with good memories for the last 30+ years. It was always and still is, much appreciated. Peace, Joe.

The old lefthander finally rounded third and headed for home.

Lots of good memories listening to Joe butcher names. Heck-a-tor Carrasco and Juan Encrarnarrrrciorn will always be linked with Nuxie in my mind.

Nuxie was a truly outstanding individual. Too bad they couldn't get it together and get him into the HOF before his passing. Marty and Joe really should have been inducted as a team, but the numbnuts that are the powers that be coudn't get it together. Just like the jackass Reds couldn't get it together and let him leave on his own terms. I had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times and get his autograph as a kid and I don't remember too many who were as friendly as the Ol' Lefthander. We'll miss ya Joe!

I can still hear his voice in my head like it was yesterday. His relentless homerism was legendary. Also, I fondly remember all the times I would turn on the game and not hear anything at all for several minutes because Nuxie never filled up dead air. And of course, the way he butchered names and missed calls was hilarious (and frustrating for some of my friends who took things way too seriously).

One final comparison as a tribute:

Nuxie calling a homer by the opponent: "(in subdued tone, as if describing a funeral) Garvey swings and it's three to nothing. A three-run homer into the seats in left field and the Dodgers take the lead."

Nuxie calling a Reds homer: "Bench swings and GET OUT!!!! GET OUT!!!! GET OUTTA HERE!!!!!! GET OUTTA HERE!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND THAT'S A BYE-YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

RIP, Joe.

Or Joe hollering in the background while Marty made the call....

Marty: "It's a high drive to left..."
Joe: "Go ball! Go ball!"
Marty: "The leftfielder is back to the wrning track...."
Joe: "Go ball! Get outta here!"
Mary: "He's looking up.....and IT'S....GONE!!!"

A character who will definitely be missed.
