Nuxhall tribute: Reds past and present pay respect

Wednesday, November 21, 2007 6:13 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Cincinnati Reds stars past and present paid respects to Joe Nuxhall, joined by friends and fans who knew him only as the "old left-hander" from his folksy radio broadcasts or his charitable work.

Nuxhall made major-league history by pitching in his first game at age 15, then remained part of professional baseball for more than six decades. His death last week at age 79 uncapped an outpouring of mourning and tributes that his family says has been overwhelming.

The Cincinnati Reds have reached preliminary agreement on a four-year, $46 million contract with closer Francisco Cordero, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com.

Over paid, but it's a start.

ESPN - Source: Reds, closer Cordero agree to $46M deal - MLB

One relief pitcher isn't gonna fix this team, but it helps. They can put him in there in the 9th, which puts other relievers like Weathers and Burton in slots better suited to their abilities - and leaves one less roster spot for some of the tripe that has been in the Reds bullpen the last couple seasons.

I love the move. Now Weathers can pitch the 8th and Burton can pitch the 7th. If Burton and Weathers both have years like last year it will make it hard on others in the late innings against us. I cant believe we actually won a bidding war for a top free agent!

If we could just add a number 2 or 3 starter via FA or trade things could get interesting. Now we will see just how much Wayne is allowed to spend.

Reds acquire Valenzuela in Rule 5 Draft
Club plucks 23-year-old righty from Braves organization
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Despite all of the scouting and time evaluating players, selecting someone in the Rule 5 Draft is often a crapshoot.
The Reds were fortunate to score two productive players last year in Josh Hamilton and Jared Burton; both had nice 2007 seasons. In this year's Rule 5 selection, they're hoping for a similar outcome in right-handed pitcher Sergio Valenzuela. By taking Valenzuela from the Braves organization on Thursday, the Reds had to look past the 23-year-old's numbers, because they weren't very good. He was 1-3 with a 7.00 ERA in 32 games, including five starts, at high Class A Rome and Double-A Myrtle Beach.

Reds conclude quiet Winter Meetings
General manager Krivsky content not to force trades
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky looked like a guy who worked late into the night for four straight days.
Seeking a starting pitcher for his rotation, Krivsky spent much of the annual Winter Meetings hunkered down in a hotel suite talking with teams and agents -- and then talking some more. As the meetings concluded Thursday morning, all of those talks yielded no acquisitions.

Redsfest 2007 pays tribute to Nuxhall
Brennaman, video tributes honor late broadcasting legend
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- Fittingly, the memories could only be fond about Joe Nuxhall. While the Reds spent the first day of Redsfest on Friday celebrating baseball, the arrival of new manager Dusty Baker and exuding optimism for the upcoming season, the festivities were stopped to pay homage to the one man everybody in the building missed most.
