Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

My boy can swing the stick too..He actually was glad to get out of Arizona and looks forward to playing for the Reds. He loves Ohio and has kind of been a buckeye fan the last couple of years (in large part to me talking about them so much to him). He is a blue collar type of player who works his ass off everyday. Not saying he will be a superstar but he can help out in many ways.

Are there any plans to play him as an outfielder, or pitcher all the way...Would love to get him at bats and put him in the 5 or 6 hole...

As far as i know he will just pitch for them starting next year. But you will see him pinch hit in some key moments when he isn't on the mound. Kind of what he did in Arizona. He won the silver slugger award his rookie year last year for pitchers. Your just not going to see teams use a guy for double duty. Too much money is involved for that to happen. Now if given the chance...He would do it in a heart beat. He did it in high school, college, and a tad bit in the minors. If you ever get a chance to watch the Reds take BP...Look for him...He will put on a show like nothing you have ever seen.

When we sat down Thurs...All he could talk about was getting tickets to watch the Bucks play. He is pumped!

Arroyo wins his 15th game of the year as the Reds beat the Cardinals. Since the purge and September call-ups, the Reds have now beaten the Cubs, Brewers, and D-Backs in straight series, and are up 1-0 in this three game stand with the Cards.

Although, it's probably not so much the rebuilt Reds, who now look like a 90-win team with Griffey and Dunn gone, and B-Phil's season over ... I think its just that nobody wants to win the NL Wild Card:

Mets - Streak: Lost 3 - L10: 4-6
Brewers - Streak: Lost 5 - L10: 2-8
Astros - Streak: Lost 3 - L10: 6-4
Cardinals - Streak: Lost 6 - L10: 3-7

Reds assured of taking the series from the Cards thanks to Harang's CG shutout last night.

Nice to see Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, and Cueto are all dealing like the 15-game winners they can be now that the season is over. :roll1:

Arroyo in particular has been filthy since changing the grip on his sinker. He can pitch to righties now and has better command than he has ever had at any other point in his career. Going back to the implosion in Toronto, he's 11-3 w/ a 2.88 ERA in his 15 starts since.

Three Cincinnati homers back Harang's complete game

CINCINNATI ? The power outage plaguing much of Ohio was not evident in Great American Ball Park on Wednesday, Sept. 17 ? especially in the fourth inning.
The Cincinnati Reds, hitless through three innings against St. Louis starter Todd Wellemeyer, plugged in three solo home runs in the fourth by third baseman Andy Phillips (2), right fielder Jay Bruce (19) and shortstop Paul Janish (1).
And they needed an extension cord to find Bruce's 438-foot blast that crashed against the black batter's eye in center field.

Pujols' homer turns tables on Volquez

Friday, September 19, 2008 3:00 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS

CINCINNATI -- Albert Pujols hit a three-run home run, Kyle Lohse returned from a five-game suspension to pick up the victory, and the St. Louis Cardinals ended a seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds last night.
Volquez (16-6) gave up four runs, with most of the damage coming on Pujols' blast in the third inning, and three hits in seven innings. He allowed six walks, a season high, and struck out five while failing for the fourth time to earn his 17th win.

Boy, there is life in Cincinnati after all. The young puts are bitin and bitin hard. Coop would be proud!

I wonder if Ned Yost would coach the Reds if given the opportunity? Dusty is not the answer, Yost may not be either but I'd be all for giving him a shot as long as Dusty leaves and takes his boy Patterson with him.

Reds plunge dagger into Brewers

Cincinnati hurts another postseason contender's hopes with seven-homer explosion.

CINCINNATI ? The fun at the expense of so-called contenders continues for the Cincinnati Reds ? a bunch of guys who entered late with no marbles and are taking away everybody else's marbles.
It all began two weeks ago when the Reds took two of three from the Chicago Cubs in Great American Ball Park.
Then they took two of three in Milwaukee, two of three in Arizona and came home to take two of three from St. Louis.

No thanks to Yost. There is a reason Milwaukee has collapsed down the stretch two years in a row. A lot of Brewers fans thought it was two years overdue. If the choice is Yost or Dusty, I'd rather keep Dusty. The young players are responding to him and they seem to be having fun too.

I've read a lot of Reds related articles over the past two weeks and one thing that really sticks out to me was Harang blaming himself for his troubles this year. He admitted that he volunteered to pitch in that 18-inning games in San Diego, despite Dusty telling him no. Harang also admitted he asked to go back out for more innings, after Dusty told him he was giving him the hook after two.

If there's one thing you can say for Dusty, his players will run through the proverbial wall for him, and his biggest failing is that he allows the players to go ahead and do it. With Griffey and Dunn gone, Dusty now looks like the right move. The kids are playing hard and are winning like they did last year when they were essentially the same group of kids in Louisville Bats uniforms.

I watched the game last night on FSN, and Grande & Welsh had Yonder Alonso up in the booth for an interview and a 'welcome to Cincinnati.' Yonder has gone from not wanting to even sign with Cinci to saying he can't wait to make it to the bigs and be a part of what they're building. I'm not saying Dusty is the answer -- I will always have huge issues with old school managers that will give up two outs to manufacture one run in todays game -- but I will say that this is the first time in probably eight years that I've watched the Reds in September and said, "I can't wait to see all these same guys back in April next year."

You guys think there is any chance that Dusty gets let go after the season?
He should be fired. He is a terrible manager. I know from watching him run my Cubs. He does not know how to manage pitchers, he likes to play unproductive veterans over young kids, only playing them when he has no other choices left, and not lighting a fire under his players.

Micah Owings > Adam Dunn.

Owings bases load pinch hit 2-RBI single in the sixth today gave the Reds the lead, and the win sealed their fifth straight winning series, all over contending teams.

Coffey gets two key outs to help Milwaukee win

Bronson Arroyo gives up six runs and six hits in six innings for his first loss in seven starts.

CINCINNATI ? Todd Coffey was so pumped up as he triumphantly marched off the field he was gazing toward the press box as he neared the Milwaukee dugout.
He missed the opening and ran into the green railing in front of the dugout.
The dugout opening was the only thing he missed Sunday afternoon in Great American Ball Park during an 8-1 Milwaukee Brewers victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

"I used him because of the way he's pitched since he came here," Sveum added. "He is throwing the heck out of the ball. He has life, sink, keeps the ball down and throws something that goes sideways."
Send 'em in Sveum,

Yes, Coffey does throws something that goes sideways. From your perspective in the dugout, it will go sideways, leaving the batters box at high velocity and landing 400-feet away in the bleachers or a bullpen. That is the Todd Coffey that the odds predict you'll see in his next three consecutive appearances to statistically offset his two straight scoreless outings.
